For a compact desk dashboard that changes occasionally rather than constantly, the strongest documented starting point is a 7.5-inch, 800×480 monochrome e-Paper HAT with a driver board. Waveshare lists SPI connectivity, partial refresh, and low panel power for this model. It is a display component, not a complete dashboard: the controller and any network connection add their own power use.

Which e-ink display fits a desk dashboard?

Choose according to what matters most: simple integration and quicker updates, color and more room, or the largest possible monochrome canvas. These options are not directly comparable power tests; their figures are manufacturer specifications for different products.

Option Documented specifications Main trade-off Best fit
7.5-inch monochrome e-Paper HAT 800×480; SPI; 4-second full refresh, 0.4-second partial refresh, 26.4 mW typical refresh power, and standby current below 0.01 μA, according to Waveshare’s listing and manual, accessed 2026. Waveshare product listing; Waveshare manual Monochrome and the smallest canvas of these three options. Waveshare says measurements are experimental and can vary with the driver board and conditions. A compact, mostly static dashboard with text, symbols, and simple charts.
9.7-inch Spectra 6 color HAT+ 1120×784; SPI; 30-second full refresh and refresh power below 0.6 W, according to Waveshare documentation, accessed 2026. Waveshare product documentation Slower full refresh and higher listed refresh power than the small monochrome option. Manufacturer notes actual performance can vary and low temperatures can shift color. A larger layout where color separation is more useful than quick refreshes.
13.3-inch monochrome module 1600×1200 and 16 gray levels in Waveshare’s panel specification, revision 1.0 dated 2017-01-13. Waveshare technical specification The document describes a panel, not a current ready-to-connect dashboard kit. Controller, waveform, and interface requirements need checking. An advanced DIY project prioritizing a large static display.

Why the 7.5-inch HAT is the practical starting point

The HAT format combines the 7.5-inch panel with a driver board and uses SPI, making it a more direct path than integrating a bare panel. Waveshare lists a 4-second full refresh and a 0.4-second partial refresh. Partial refresh is useful when only a small part of a mostly stable dashboard changes, but support and behavior depend on the exact panel and driver.

Waveshare describes the panel as having no backlight and retaining its last image after power is removed. That is a panel characteristic, not a claim that an assembled dashboard uses no power: its controller and any Wi-Fi or rendering host still consume energy. The listed 26.4 mW typical refresh power and standby current below 0.01 μA are panel figures, not a whole-system measurement.

When color or a larger screen is worth the trade-off

Choose the 9.7-inch Spectra 6 when color improves scanning

The 9.7-inch color option offers more area than the 7.5-inch screen and a color palette that can distinguish categories or status. The cost is slower refresh: Waveshare specifies 30 seconds for a full refresh and refresh power below 0.6 W. Its documentation also cautions that performance may vary and low temperatures can shift color, so it is a better match for information that changes infrequently than for rapid interaction.

Consider the 13.3-inch module only if you can integrate a panel

The cited 13.3-inch specification gives a resolution of 1600×1200 and 16 gray levels, but it dates from 2017 and is panel-level documentation. It does not establish that a current, ready-to-connect kit is available. Before choosing it, verify the exact panel configuration, compatible controller and waveform, interface electronics, and supporting examples for your intended host.

What to check before buying

  • Screen fit: Compare physical area and resolution against the text, charts, and viewing distance you need.
  • Color: Decide whether color separation is worth slower refresh compared with monochrome.
  • Refresh mode: Confirm full and partial refresh support for the specific panel, driver board, and software you plan to use.
  • Power scope: Treat panel refresh and standby specifications separately from the controller, host, and network power draw.
  • Integration: Prefer a panel-plus-driver configuration unless you are prepared to source and configure a compatible driver board. Waveshare’s raw 7.5-inch listing explicitly says the panel is supplied without a PCB. Waveshare raw panel listing
  • Revision and support: Check the exact product revision, connector, driver library, supported refresh modes, and examples for your chosen controller. Compatibility across Raspberry Pi, ESP32, Arduino, STM32, or Jetson Nano should not be assumed for every panel and board combination.

How to keep a dashboard’s power use sensible

For a mostly static display, schedule updates around meaningful data changes instead of refreshing continuously, and use partial updates only where the exact hardware supports them. Waveshare’s 7.5-inch manual recommends putting the panel into sleep or disconnecting its power during standby where the hardware permits, both to reduce consumption and extend screen life. The cited specifications do not establish a universal update interval or a battery-life estimate.
