The best low-cost upgrade is the one that fixes your actual bottleneck: getting a picture, improving a weak signal, or solving a practical setup problem. Before buying anything, identify your console’s exact model, revision and region, the best video signal it can output, and the inputs on your display. A cheap composite-to-HDMI converter can make an old console work with an HDMI-only TV, but it does not improve composite picture quality.
Start with your console and TV, not an adapter
Write down four details before comparing products:
- Console and revision: Names alone are not always enough; a later revision may have different video outputs.
- Region: NTSC and PAL versions can differ in outputs or signal behavior.
- Best available output: Check whether your console supports composite, S-video, component or RGB. A better cable only helps if the console can produce that signal.
- Display inputs: Check the TV or monitor itself for matching analog inputs, as well as HDMI. If the TV already has a compatible input, you may not need a converter.
Compatibility is specific, not universal. For example, RetroTINK’s product documentation says its 2X Pro has limitations with off-spec Sega Genesis and PS1 composite signals, and its optional N64 S-video cable is NTSC-only: RetroTINK 2X Pro documentation.
Choose the least expensive path that solves the problem
| Upgrade path | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Use the TV’s analog input | The TV already has an input matching the console’s cable. | Confirm the input type. Picture quality and lag depend on the TV and signal. |
| Composite-to-HDMI converter | A composite-output console and an HDMI-only display, when lowest cost matters most. | Confirm PAL/NTSC support and current product details. Composite remains a soft signal, and inexpensive converters can add processing lag. |
| Console-specific HDMI adapter or cable | A simple connection for one explicitly supported console. | Check the exact console family, revision and region. Some products use a particular analog output and cannot work without it. |
| Better analog cable with a compatible display or scaler | A console that supports S-video, component or RGB, paired with a device that accepts that signal. | Match the cable and input to the console’s actual output and region. RetroTINK recommends S-video or component over composite where supported. |
| Dedicated retro scaler | A multi-console setup or a need for specific signal handling and image controls. | Compare supported inputs, console signal compatibility, display compatibility and 480i handling. A scaler usually costs more and requires more setup than a basic adapter. |
| CRT television | You have access to a suitable working CRT and want its native 4:3 presentation. | Account for availability, condition, size and transport. A modern TV needs a compatible signal path. |
Is a cheap composite-to-HDMI converter good enough?
It can be good enough if your goal is simply to connect a console with composite output to a TV that only accepts HDMI. It is a connection fix, not a picture-fidelity upgrade: composite is a relatively soft signal, and the converter cannot recover detail that the console did not send. Processing in inexpensive converters can also add input lag, which may matter in timing-sensitive games.
As one dated example rather than a current recommendation, Game Over Gear’s guide, updated May 30, 2026, described the BD&M composite RCA-to-HDMI converter as a budget option for systems such as NES, SNES, Genesis and N64. Its approximately $14.99 price was captured on that date only; price and stock can change. The guide also names a LEVELHIKE SNES-to-HDMI adapter for SNES and Super Famicom, which is a console-specific option, not a universal solution: Game Over Gear’s converter guide.

When a better analog signal is worth paying for
If your console supports S-video, component or RGB, using that output can improve the source signal compared with composite—but only if the next device accepts it. That might be a matching input on the TV or a compatible scaler. Check the console’s region and revision before buying a cable, and confirm the receiving device supports the exact signal. RetroTINK’s 2X Pro documentation lists composite, S-video and component inputs and recommends S-video or component over composite where supported: RetroTINK 2X Pro documentation.
Do console-specific HDMI cables fit every version?
No. A product advertised for a console family may rely on a particular output that is absent from some versions. Hyperkin’s guide, dated August 7, 2026, says its 3-in-1 HDTV cable supports GameCube, N64 and SNES, outputs 720p over HDMI and uses USB power. It excludes PAL GameCube and SNES Jr. units because those consoles lack the S-video output the cable uses. Hyperkin lists the cable at $29.99 in that guide; verify current price, stock and compatibility before buying: Hyperkin’s compatibility guide.

Should you buy a dedicated retro scaler?
A scaler makes sense when you need to handle multiple analog consoles or want capabilities beyond a basic connection adapter. Check the inputs and signal caveats against your actual systems; “works with retro consoles” is not specific enough to establish compatibility. For example, the RetroTINK-2X Pro accepts composite, S-video and component and line-doubles standard-definition signals to digital output, but its official page labels it a legacy product and notes limitations for some signals and 480i. Treat it as a documented example, not an automatic current buying recommendation; check the manufacturer’s current product lineup and availability: RetroTINK 2X Pro documentation.

A working CRT is an alternative display route if you want a native 4:3 presentation and have room and access to a suitable set. It avoids the need to convert a compatible analog console output to HDMI, but condition, size and transport are practical constraints. If your picture path already works, spend on the specific inconvenience instead: an HDMI switch for too few TV inputs, a controller extension for short leads, or a memory card, surge protector or console stand where needed. These are possible fixes, not universal essentials.

Use this buying checklist
- Name the exact console, revision and region. Do not rely on a product’s broad console-family label.
- Identify the best signal the console actually outputs. Do not buy an S-video, component or RGB cable unless the console supports that signal.
- Check the display or scaler’s input. If it already matches the console, try that route before buying a converter.
- Decide whether you need compatibility or fidelity. Composite-to-HDMI can solve a connection problem; a better source signal and compatible receiving device are the route to improved picture quality.
- Compare total cost and trade-offs. Include the required cable or power, setup complexity, possible processing lag, and whether you prefer a modern display or CRT.
- Verify the current listing. Product availability, stock and prices change; confirm the seller’s exact compatibility notes before ordering.
