For a Chromebook, choose software that runs in the browser. StreamYard is the strongest documented option here for guests, branded layouts and multiple destinations; YouTube Studio’s Webcam flow is the simplest route for a basic YouTube broadcast. OBS is not a dependable default for ChromeOS: the OBS Project’s published system requirements do not list ChromeOS.
These recommendations reflect official documentation, not Chromebook testing or a measured comparison of stream quality. Performance depends on the Chromebook, its camera and microphone, and the network.

For a Chromebook-first setup, the browser options have clearer documented paths. Pick StreamYard if you need a hosted studio with guests or branded production; pick YouTube Studio Webcam if you only need a direct webcam stream to YouTube.
What to check before going live from a Chromebook
Connection
StreamYard recommends at least 5 Mbps upload and download, and suggests Ethernet where possible. Treat that as the service’s guidance, not a guarantee of a particular resolution or stable performance on every Chromebook. If you must use Wi-Fi, choose a reliable network and avoid competing uploads or downloads during the broadcast.

Camera and microphone
An external webcam or microphone is optional, not a universal requirement. The Chromebook’s built-in devices may be enough for a basic broadcast. For a more polished production, StreamYard recommends a quality webcam and microphone. Check whether an accessory uses USB-A or USB-C and whether your Chromebook needs an adapter; compatibility varies by device and accessory.
Browser and destination
Use Chrome for the best StreamYard experience, connect the camera and microphone you intend to use, and confirm the destination supports the features you need. StreamYard notes that destination features differ, so a feature available for one platform may not be available for another.

How to start a StreamYard broadcast on a Chromebook
- Open StreamYard in Chrome and follow its onboarding to enter the browser studio; no software download is required.
- Connect or select the camera and microphone you plan to use. Check the browser’s device permissions if either device does not appear.
- Set up the destination or destinations for the broadcast. Review the available features for each destination before choosing a multi-destination setup.
- Invite guests from the studio if you are hosting an interview or group discussion, and configure the branding and layout you want to use.
- Before going live, confirm the selected camera, microphone and network. StreamYard recommends at least 5 Mbps upload and download, with Ethernet where possible.
How to go live with YouTube Studio Webcam
- Enable live streaming for your YouTube channel. YouTube’s encoder guidance says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours; check current account eligibility and wait for activation if needed.
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room.
- Choose the Webcam option, then select the correct camera and microphone.
- Review the broadcast details in YouTube Studio and start the stream when ready. YouTube’s Webcam workflow does not require separate live-stream encoding software.
- If you need to show your screen, use the screen-sharing option in Live Control Room. YouTube’s help guidance specifies that a webcam and microphone must be connected for this workflow.
Can you install OBS on ChromeOS?
OBS is not a safe default recommendation for a Chromebook because the OBS Project’s published system requirements do not list ChromeOS. That omission does not establish that every Linux-container experiment will fail, but it does mean those experiments should be treated as unsupported workarounds rather than a documented, dependable setup. If OBS scenes and encoder controls are essential, use a computer running an operating system listed in OBS’s requirements instead of relying on a Chromebook workaround.

The camera or microphone does not appear
Check browser device permissions, confirm that the device is connected, and select the intended input in the studio or YouTube Webcam setup. If using an external accessory, check its USB connection and any adapter; try a different compatible port if available.

The stream stutters or loses quality
Check upload stability and reduce competing network traffic. StreamYard’s 5 Mbps upload and download recommendation is guidance, not a guarantee; a connection that fluctuates can still cause trouble. Use Ethernet where possible and close unnecessary bandwidth-heavy activity.
YouTube will not let the channel go live
Check that live streaming is enabled on the channel and review YouTube’s current eligibility and policy rules. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours according to YouTube’s encoder guidance, so a newly enabled channel may need to wait.

A StreamYard feature is missing at a destination
Check the feature availability for that destination. StreamYard documents that features vary across destinations, so changing the destination or adjusting the production workflow may be necessary.
OBS will not install or run as expected
ChromeOS is not among the operating systems listed in OBS’s published requirements. Rather than assuming an unsupported Linux-container setup will work reliably, use a browser-based option or a computer on a supported desktop operating system.

Streaming software does not grant rights to music, video or other material used in a broadcast. Use content you own or are authorized to stream, and check YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream policies before broadcasting. Eligibility and platform rules can change; consult YouTube’s current guidance for your account and content.
