Yes—a Linux VPS can run a continuous YouTube stream, especially when you are looping prerecorded church services. A practical headless setup is FFmpeg sending compatible media to YouTube over RTMPS, with systemd starting and supervising the encoder. A VPS is not automatically the right place to produce a live service: you must first work out how the camera and soundboard mix will reach it. No universal VPS size or monthly cost is established; encoding workload and provider network terms determine what will work.

Choose the signal path before choosing the VPS

A continuous stream can mean two different things. Decide which one you need before installing software: the prerecorded-media example described here does not provide a complete camera-to-YouTube production chain.

Looping prerecorded services

Store your recordings on the VPS, have FFmpeg read and send them to YouTube, and use systemd to manage the process. This is a demonstrated community pattern for an Ubuntu VPS, not a YouTube-certified architecture or a guarantee that any particular server plan will perform reliably. See the community Ubuntu VPS example for the implementation pattern.

Broadcasting a live service

A live service needs a source signal: camera video and the soundboard mix must be captured and delivered to the encoder. A VPS does not itself capture cameras or mix audio, and the available implementation example does not establish a universal method for getting that signal to a remote server. Map the full path first—camera and audio mix, capture or production system, network path to the VPS, encoder, then YouTube. Test that entire chain before relying on it for a service.

Use YouTube’s current ingest recommendations

YouTube Help lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest, and recommends RTMPS to encrypt the connection in transit. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, with a maximum interval of four seconds. For stereo audio, it recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. These are platform recommendations, not proof that a particular VPS or network can sustain them. See YouTube’s encoder settings and live encoder guidance.

H.264 bitrate starting points

Output YouTube-recommended ingest bitrate
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

The figures are YouTube Help’s H.264 recommendations on the current page accessed in 2026; they are not independent performance measurements. Choose a resolution and frame rate the source, encoder, VPS, and network can sustain. A lower, stable output is preferable to selecting a higher setting that the complete path cannot maintain.

Build a headless prerecorded loop

For prerecorded material, the basic architecture is local media on the server, FFmpeg as the encoder and sender, and systemd as the service manager. The exact FFmpeg command depends on the files and chosen output settings; the community implementation is an example, not a universal configuration. Before adapting one, verify how it handles the end of a file, transitions between files, and errors.

  1. Prepare and test the media. Confirm the recordings have usable video and audio, decide the output resolution and frame rate, and ensure the encoder settings meet YouTube’s ingest guidance. Test representative speech, music, movement, and transitions.
  2. Create the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio’s live control room, configure the broadcast and retrieve its stream key. Use RTMPS when configuring the encoder where available, and confirm the selected output settings match the intended broadcast.
  3. Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password. Do not commit it to a Git repository or expose it in a public script. Put it in a restricted configuration mechanism and limit access to the account and server. The community example specifically warns against committing a real key.
  4. Run FFmpeg under systemd. Configure a service to start the encoder independently of an interactive terminal and supervise the process if it exits. A service restart policy can restart a failed process; it cannot by itself confirm that YouTube is receiving healthy video and audio.
  5. Verify both ends. Check the systemd service state and the live control room’s stream-health status. YouTube recommends testing the encoder setup and monitoring stream health and messages during the event.

What a VPS can—and cannot—keep running

A VPS removes the need to keep a church computer logged in and running the encoder, but it also makes the server’s CPU, storage, and network path part of the broadcast. Transcoding video can demand substantially different resources from sending compatible media without re-encoding, so there is no defensible universal VPS specification here. Check the provider’s current outbound-traffic allowance and pricing against a continuous stream at your chosen bitrate before committing.

Systemd supervision is useful, but a running process is not the same as a healthy viewer-side stream. A restarted encoder may still fail to reconnect correctly, or it may run while the incoming signal is stalled. The cited sources do not certify a particular watchdog, alerting setup, or automatic broadcast lifecycle. Decide who will monitor the YouTube control room and what they should do if the stream-health indicator or messages show a problem.

Test failure cases before relying on the stream

  • A media file ends: Confirm the playlist or FFmpeg workflow advances to the next item rather than stopping or leaving silence. The specific transition behavior depends on your chosen configuration.
  • The source feed drops: For a live service, determine how the encoder behaves when camera or audio input disappears and who can restore the feed. The prerecorded-loop example does not cover live capture recovery.
  • FFmpeg exits: Check that systemd reports the failure and applies the restart behavior you configured. Then verify that the encoder reconnects and YouTube reports healthy ingest.
  • The VPS loses connectivity: A process restart cannot fix an unavailable network. Check the YouTube control room after connectivity returns and confirm whether the broadcast needs operator action.
  • YouTube reports unhealthy ingest: Review the control-room messages and stream-health signals, then check encoder output settings, bitrate stability, and audio/video source health.

Keep the stream within YouTube’s rules

Technical compliance does not grant permission to rebroadcast the content. Before putting recorded services, music, or other material into a continuous loop, confirm that the church has the necessary rights and permissions. A continuous stream also needs a responsible operator to monitor ingest and respond to issues; an unattended server process alone is not a complete operating plan.
