For most LG OLED TVs, start with Game Optimizer picture mode, then enable VRR and ALLM when both the TV and connected console or PC support them. The exact menu path and feature availability vary by model and webOS version, so use the steps below as a baseline and check your TV’s on-screen options.

Recommended LG OLED gaming settings

  • Picture mode: Game Optimizer.
  • VRR: On when supported by both the TV and the connected source.
  • ALLM: Auto or On for compatible gameplay when lower display latency is the priority.
  • Optional picture adjustments: Tune OLED Motion, Dark Room Mode, or Fine Tune Dark Areas to your preference and viewing conditions; they are not universal best settings.

Game Optimizer is LG’s gaming mode and menu area for gaming controls. LG associates it with minimizing input delay. It is the practical starting point, but it does not make every game or signal behave identically. LG’s guidance does not give one input-lag measurement that applies to every OLED model, signal format, and setting. LG’s Game Optimizer and Game Dashboard guide and its 2024 webOS 24 Game Optimizer guide describe the controls and how they can vary.

How to enable Game Optimizer, VRR, and ALLM

  1. Connect your console or PC to the TV with HDMI, then select that HDMI input. LG’s Game Optimizer controls are used with the external game input. For demanding high-refresh signals, use a cable that is rated for the signal your TV and source are configured to send; the cable alone does not activate VRR or reduce input lag.
  2. Open the picture-mode controls and choose Game Optimizer. On some models, you may also need to enable Game Optimizer in its menu. Older TVs can use earlier labels such as Instant Game Response, and menu locations differ by model and webOS generation. See LG’s setup instructions for model-specific guidance.
  3. Open Game Optimizer or Game Dashboard and enable the available VRR option. Choose VRR, G-SYNC, or AMD FreeSync only if the TV and source device support the relevant feature. LG says its documented VRR setup requires an HDMI connection and Game Optimizer screen mode. Its VRR and G-SYNC instructions and AMD FreeSync instructions note that support depends on the TV model and graphics hardware.
  4. Set ALLM to Auto or On, if available. This lets compatible devices signal the TV to use a low-latency behavior. Check the TV’s Game Dashboard or status display to confirm which gaming features are active.
  5. Adjust optional controls only if they solve a specific issue. For example, use Fine Tune Dark Areas if shadow detail needs adjustment. Changes to picture controls can affect the image, so assess them in the game and room where you play.

What VRR, ALLM, and Game Optimizer each do

Game Optimizer: the low-latency starting mode

Game Optimizer is the TV’s gaming picture mode and control area. It is the first setting to try when the priority is responsive play; available controls depend on the particular model.

VRR: matches refresh to changing frame delivery

Variable refresh rate coordinates the display’s refresh with changing frame delivery from a compatible source, helping reduce tearing or stutter. It requires the appropriate HDMI connection and supported TV mode; the source device must also support the synchronization feature in use. G-SYNC and AMD FreeSync are source-platform synchronization technologies, not settings that can be enabled successfully on every TV and computer combination.

ALLM: automatic low-latency behavior

ALLM is signaling between compatible equipment that prompts the TV to use a low-latency mode. LG describes it as reducing delays between controller input and the TV’s audio and video output. It does not make a game render at a higher frame rate. Read LG’s ALLM explanation for more detail.

Console and PC considerations

Console

On a compatible console and TV, leave ALLM on Auto or On for gameplay if you want the TV to switch automatically to low-latency behavior. Some console settings can affect access to TV picture adjustments. On PS5, LG says ALLM set to Auto can prevent simultaneous adjustment of some TV picture controls. If a control is unavailable, turn ALLM off temporarily, make the adjustment, and restore it for play if desired. Refer to LG’s ALLM and Game Optimizer guidance.

PC

For a gaming PC, confirm both the LG TV model and graphics hardware support the selected synchronization format. Enable the corresponding TV option in Game Optimizer, then check Game Dashboard to verify its status. A VRR-capable TV does not by itself establish that every GPU, connection, or signal mode is compatible.

Why the best menu path varies by LG OLED

LG’s support instructions cover different menu layouts and naming across model years and webOS generations. A 2024 webOS 24 guide illustrates one generation’s Game Optimizer controls, but it should not be treated as the exact path for every LG OLED. If an option is absent, check the support page for your exact model rather than assuming the TV has the feature or that a differently named setting is equivalent.

Input lag: what to expect

Game Optimizer, VRR, and ALLM address different parts of the gaming experience; they do not yield one universal input-lag figure. The number depends on the TV model, configuration, and signal mode. LG’s cited setup guidance explains how to minimize delay but does not publish a single millisecond measurement for all LG OLED TVs. Treat any input-lag number as meaningful only when it identifies the exact TV model, firmware, signal format, and picture mode measured.
