The best IT asset management software of 2025 depends on the job: ServiceNow suits large enterprises, Flexera One suits complex software licensing, Lansweeper suits discovery, ManageEngine AssetExplorer suits value-focused ITAM, Freshservice suits ITSM-plus-ITAM, and Snipe-IT suits low-cost self-hosted asset registers. Pricing and packaging should be rechecked because several products changed after 2025.

There is no defensible universal winner. A platform that is excellent at discovering servers or calculating software entitlements may be unnecessarily expensive for a school that only needs laptop check-in and check-out. Conversely, a simple asset register will not solve an enterprise’s Oracle licensing, SaaS governance, CMDB, or cloud-visibility problems.

This comparison therefore treats “best” as a use-case decision rather than an arbitrary overall ranking. Prices noted below are vendor-page signals checked in the dossier as of August 16, 2026; they should not be presented as prices that were valid throughout 2025.

Key takeaways

  • ServiceNow IT Asset Management is the strongest shortlist candidate for large organizations already operating on ServiceNow and needing ITAM connected to procurement, CMDB, service workflows, and enterprise governance.
  • Flexera One IT Asset Management is the specialist option for complex hybrid software licensing, SaaS governance, cloud, container, entitlement, and license-optimization work.
  • Lansweeper emphasizes agentless and agent-based discovery, while Snipe-IT emphasizes ownership, checkout, tags, serial numbers, and lifecycle records; neither should automatically be treated as a complete enterprise ITAM suite.
  • ManageEngine AssetExplorer publishes asset-based cloud prices, including $1,245 per year for 250 assets and $16,695 per year for 10,000 assets on one displayed annual schedule checked in August 2026.
  • Freshservice’s current ITAM model uses weighted Asset Units rather than a simple device count, and Freshservice documentation says the current offering became available to new signups on March 31, 2026.

Best IT asset management software of 2025: quick comparison

The best IT asset management software of 2025 is different for an enterprise, a discovery-led infrastructure team, and a small organization that needs an equipment register. The table below separates those jobs instead of assigning one misleading universal ranking.

What is IT asset management software?

IT asset management software records, governs, and reports on technology from purchase through deployment, repair, renewal, retirement, and disposal. A useful ITAM system combines inventory with ownership, procurement, contracts, warranties, lifecycle states, audit history, relationships, and reporting.

What does a complete ITAM system include?

Core capabilities usually include laptops, desktops, servers, phones, tablets, printers, network equipment, storage, peripherals, installed software, serial numbers, tags, assignments, locations, vendors, purchase orders, warranties, renewals, depreciation fields, check-in/check-out, approvals, audit history, exports, APIs, and integrations.

Advanced products add network, cloud, container, and data-center discovery; configuration-item relationships; service mapping; software-license calculations; SaaS discovery; vulnerability context; refresh planning; license reclamation; and automated onboarding and offboarding.

What is the difference between ITAM, ITSM, CMDB, SAM, discovery, and endpoint management?

ITAM governs technology assets, while IT service management governs the delivery and support of services. The categories overlap, but they are not interchangeable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Category Primary question What it may not solve by itself
Basic asset register Who has which laptop, monitor, phone, or printer? Unknown devices, deep integrations, and software compliance
ITAM What was bought, who owns it, where is it, what state is it in, and what happens next? Accurate discovery or licensing without connected data sources
ITSM How are incidents, requests, changes, and services delivered? Complex entitlement analysis or complete financial lifecycle control
CMDB How are configuration items related to systems and business services? Reliable relationships if reconciliation and governance are weak
Software asset management What licenses are owned, consumed, unused, over-deployed, or expiring? Physical asset logistics unless integrated with ITAM
Discovery and inventory What devices, software, IP addresses, and resources actually exist? Ownership, purchase history, warranty, accounting value, and license rights
Endpoint management Can devices be configured, patched, secured, or remotely controlled? Procurement, contracts, depreciation, and disposal governance

Microsoft Intune, Jamf, or another endpoint-management platform may already provide reliable device inventory. That inventory still may need to flow into a separate ITAM system for procurement, assignment, contracts, finance, and disposal.

How should you choose the best IT asset management software?

Choose the product by weighting the problems that create financial, operational, or compliance risk rather than by counting features.

Criterion Importance Evaluation question
Inventory accuracy High Can discovery, procurement, assignment, and manual records be reconciled?
Discovery coverage High Does the system cover remote, cloud, network, virtual, container, and unmanaged environments?
Lifecycle management High Can it manage purchase, deployment, repair, renewal, retirement, and disposal with audit history?
Software asset management High for enterprises Does it understand entitlements, license metrics, suites, rights, SaaS usage, and reclamation?
ITSM integration High if service desk matters Are assets linked naturally to incidents, requests, changes, and services?
CMDB capability Medium to high Are relationships governed, reconciled, historically tracked, and maintainable?
Ease of deployment High for SMBs Can a small team deploy and administer the system without consultants?
Automation Medium to high Can it automate discovery, reminders, approvals, renewals, and offboarding?
API and integrations High Is the API complete, documented, and included in the purchased plan?
Security and governance High Are SSO, RBAC, audit logs, encryption, certifications, and data-residency controls adequate?
Total cost of ownership High What will licensing, implementation, integration, cleanup, administration, and renewal cost?
Exit and portability Medium Can assets, relationships, attachments, and history be exported?

Score “not disclosed” separately from “not supported.” Do not award full credit to an expensive add-on without including its cost. Test the exact edition, region, asset count, user count, API tier, and deployment model that the organization would buy.

Which IT asset management software is best for each use case?

ServiceNow IT Asset Management: best for enterprise workflow integration

ServiceNow is the strongest candidate when ITAM must connect with procurement, catalogs, CMDB, service workflows, HR, finance, and broader enterprise operations. ServiceNow describes ITAM as covering hardware, software, and cloud assets through its platform and connecting asset records with procurement, catalogs, CMDB, and cross-functional workflows; see the ServiceNow IT Asset Management overview.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ServiceNow also offers a dedicated Software Asset Management product for license compliance, software lifecycle control, SaaS license management, and reclamation of unused rights, as described on the ServiceNow Software Asset Management page.

Trade-offs: Public pricing is not shown on the cited product page. Implementation, customization, administration, and consulting can materially affect cost. Confirm which hardware, software, cloud, SAM, and CMDB modules are included.

Do not choose it merely for a small asset register. ServiceNow is a poor fit when the organization has few assets, no ServiceNow footprint, and no capacity to support enterprise platform administration.

Flexera One IT Asset Management: best for complex licensing

Flexera One is the strongest specialist candidate when the main risk involves Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, IBM, Adobe, VMware, or other complex software licensing across on-premises, SaaS, cloud, and containers. Flexera emphasizes normalized product and entitlement data, hybrid licensing, license optimization, and cost control on its Flexera One IT Asset Management page.

Flexera is more than an installed-software counter: buyers should examine entitlement records, license metrics, suites and bundles, upgrade and downgrade rights, maintenance rights, virtualization and mobility rules, SaaS activity, reclamation, audit reports, contracts, and renewal ownership.

Trade-offs: A specialist licensing platform may be more expensive and demanding than a hardware inventory tool. Implementation depends heavily on data sources, entitlement quality, contract interpretation, and the vendors being managed.

Do not choose it for only laptop check-in/check-out. Flexera’s value is greatest when software, SaaS, cloud, or audit exposure justifies specialist governance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test: normalization of real publisher data, entitlement imports, license-position calculations, virtualization scenarios, SaaS usage data, renewal reporting, and integration with the existing CMDB or ITSM platform.

Lansweeper: best for discovery and infrastructure visibility

Lansweeper is a strong choice when the immediate problem is “what exists?” rather than “what did finance buy and how should it be depreciated?” The product emphasizes agentless and agent-based discovery, asset search, infrastructure visibility, integrations, service-desk enrichment, and software asset features; consult the Lansweeper pricing and capability page for current tier differences.

The pricing page checked in August 2026 showed a free continuation tier for up to 100 assets, Starter and Pro packages displayed from approximately $199 and $379 per month respectively when billed annually for 2,000 assets, and custom Enterprise pricing beginning at 10,000 assets. The page displayed multiple crossed-out or alternate figures, so buyers should confirm the applicable currency, billing basis, minimum, and included features before treating any figure as a quote.

Trade-offs: Discovery does not automatically establish ownership, purchase history, warranty, accounting value, license rights, or retirement status. Asset-count thresholds may also be awkward for smaller or unusual estates.

Test: off-network laptops, segmented networks, powered-off devices, cloud accounts, virtual machines, containers, duplicate identities, agent deployment, API access, and the exact service-desk and SAM features included in the selected tier.

ManageEngine AssetExplorer: best value-oriented conventional ITAM

ManageEngine AssetExplorer is a practical shortlist candidate for small and midsize organizations that want hardware and software discovery, inventory, lifecycle workflows, purchasing, vendor management, and CMDB functionality without starting with a large enterprise platform. The vendor lists these capabilities on the AssetExplorer product page.

  • Sturdy Anti-Shock and Durable Design: The Eyoyo 2D barcode scanner features an ergonomic design made of high-quality ABS, enabling it to withstand repeated drops from 5 ft/1.5 m high onto the concrete ground; The durable plastic material ensures a long service life

One displayed annual cloud pricing schedule checked in August 2026 listed $1,245 for 250 assets, $2,345 for 500, $3,895 for 1,000, $6,245 for 2,000, $9,345 for 3,000, $12,445 for 5,000, and $16,695 for 10,000 assets. These figures come from the ManageEngine AssetExplorer pricing page; confirm whether the selected schedule is cloud or on-premises, annual or monthly billing, edition-specific, and whether add-ons are included.

Trade-offs: Feature breadth is not proof of discovery reliability or ease of administration. Test the interface, reporting, integrations, data normalization, CMDB behavior, and the relationship between AssetExplorer and the broader ServiceDesk Plus ecosystem.

Do not choose it without testing custom workflow needs. Organizations with advanced publisher licensing or a strategic existing ITSM platform may need a specialist or a consolidated platform instead.

Freshservice: best approachable ITSM plus ITAM

Freshservice is a good fit for organizations that want ticketing, service catalog, workflows, onboarding, CMDB, discovery, and asset lifecycle records in one SaaS product. Freshservice documentation describes discovery for Windows, Mac, Linux, network, cloud, storage, and infrastructure environments, along with hardware asset management and workflow automation; see the Freshservice ITAM overview documentation.

Freshservice’s current ITAM pricing is based on Asset Units. The vendor’s model assigns one unit to a desktop, mobile device, end-user device, or SaaS user; four units to a server, virtual machine, or network device; one-half unit to a container or function; one twenty-fifth unit to an archived device or physical non-IP asset; one-fifth unit per 5 TB of discovered storage; and 400 units to a mainframe or midrange system. The current unit rules are documented on the Freshservice ITAM pricing page.

Freshservice support documentation says the current ITAM offering became available for new signups on March 31, 2026. Older 2025 articles may therefore describe different packaging or per-agent pricing; the current plan documentation should take precedence for a new evaluation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trade-offs: A small endpoint estate may be inexpensive to model, while many servers, network devices, storage systems, or other weighted asset types may make Asset Unit consumption unexpectedly high. Verify which discovery, CMDB, SAM, automation, and reporting capabilities require Pro, Enterprise, or separate modules.

Ivanti Neurons for ITAM: best for Ivanti customers

Ivanti Neurons for ITAM is most compelling when the organization already uses Ivanti endpoint, discovery, patch, security, or service-management products. Ivanti describes the cloud-based platform as consolidating hardware, server, client, virtual, cloud, and software asset data across the lifecycle and connecting the repository with service-management CMDB data on its Ivanti Neurons for ITAM page.

Trade-offs: Public pricing is not clearly shown on the cited official product pages. Buyers should scrutinize current product names, licensing metrics, legacy Landesk dependencies, modules, implementation services, and the exact relationship between ITAM, endpoint, discovery, and service-management products.

Do not choose it automatically if you are not an Ivanti customer. A low-administration tool with transparent pricing may be a better fit for a small independent IT team.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Snipe-IT: best low-cost or self-hosted asset register

Snipe-IT is a strong choice for schools, nonprofits, labs, small businesses, and internal IT teams that primarily need ownership, assignment, checkout, barcode or tag records, serial numbers, and lifecycle tracking. Snipe-IT states that its self-hosted software is free and that hosted plans include unlimited users and assets on its Snipe-IT pricing page.

NETUM Bluetooth Barcode Scanner, Support 2.4G Wireless & Bluetooth & Wired
  • Widely Compatible: Bluetooth Barcode Scanner for iPhone iPad Android Tablet PC, Support HID / SPP / BLE mode via bluetooth, Work with Windows XP/7/8/10, Mac OS, Windows Mobile, Android OS, iOS, Linux.
  • Strong Recognition Ability: With the 2500 pixels high-resolution CCD sensor Engine, Rapidly decodes all 1D and stacked barcodes (including ISBN book), even worn, damaged or tightly spaced codes. Scan 1D codes directly from paper or screen, such as a computer monitor, smartphone, or tablet, or scan through glass surfaces, plastic shrink wrap, a CCD scanner is likely the best way to go.
  • Automatic Scanning: NT-1228bc barcode scanner have three scanning modes: manual trigger mode, continuous scanning mode and auto-sensing scanning mode. In addition, there is a storage mode. Storage mode can be used when you are out of range of Bluetooth and wireless connectivity. Supports storage of up to 100,000 barcodes. Note: Before use, you need to scan the corresponding setting barcode on the manual.
  • 2600mAh Battery Upgraded: Continuous scanning up to 200,000 times on a full charge. After a full charge the scanner can be used for one month at least, even in warehouses and at pos checkout counters where scanners are frequently used. In libraries and hospitals it can be used even longer.
  • Programmable Configuration: Add custom prefixes/ suffixes, delete characters, Add keyboard keys/ combinations (terminator TAB, CR&LF, Home etc.), Enable or disable the barcode type as you want. Buzzer can be set to mute to allow for a quiet operation.(Note: It does not work with square POS / Divalto / DoorDash / Lightspeed POS system)

The displayed hosted prices were Basic Hosting at $399.99 annually or $39.99 monthly, Small Business Hosting at $999.99 annually or $99.99 monthly, and Dedicated Hosting at $2,499.99 annually or $249.99 monthly. Snipe-IT also displayed self-hosted support plans including Standard Support at $449.99 annually and Enterprise Support at $4,999.99 annually; confirm current prices before purchase.

Free does not mean zero total cost. Self-hosting still requires infrastructure, installation, monitoring, patching, backups, security controls, upgrade testing, recovery planning, and someone responsible for the system. Hosted plans shift much of that work to the provider.

Do not choose Snipe-IT for deep network discovery, enterprise CMDB service mapping, complex software-license compliance, or integrated procurement and finance workflows. Consider GLPI when open-source ITSM and asset management are both required, but verify current packaging and support separately.

Jira Service Management Assets: best for Atlassian-centric teams

Jira Service Management Assets is worth evaluating when Jira is already the operational hub and teams want asset and configuration data connected to issues, requests, changes, projects, and engineering workflows. The relevant starting point is Atlassian’s asset and configuration management page.

Trade-offs: Jira Assets may be a natural ITSM and configuration-management option without being the best dedicated SAM or discovery platform. Verify object limits, asset limits, automation limits, API access, user licensing, plan requirements, import quality, and the administration burden of a customized object model.

Do not choose it as a specialist licensing platform by default. It is most attractive when Atlassian identity, automation, reporting, and service workflows already exist.

Why is automated discovery not the same as an authoritative inventory?

Automated discovery identifies technical facts; authoritative ITAM must add business facts and governance. A scan may find a laptop, operating system, IP address, installed application, and network relationship, but it may not know who owns the laptop, whether the laptop is leased, its accounting value, warranty status, license rights, or whether another system already represents the same device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Discovery can also miss remote workers, powered-off devices, segmented networks, blocked agents, cloud accounts, contractors, BYOD, ephemeral containers, and unmanaged systems. A good proof of concept should measure coverage, duplicate handling, data-source precedence, stale-record detection, reconciliation, and ownership assignment—not merely whether a scan completes.

How accurate does a CMDB need to be?

A CMDB is useful only when configuration items, relationships, owners, and lifecycle states remain trustworthy. A product advertising CMDB functionality does not guarantee accurate service mapping.

During evaluation, test duplicate handling, reconciliation rules, relationship discovery, manual overrides, source precedence, historical changes, import and export quality, stale-record alerts, and synchronization between asset and configuration records. Decide which system is authoritative for each field: procurement for purchase data, HR or identity for user status, endpoint management for device state, finance for accounting data, and ITAM or CMDB for governed relationships.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

What should software asset management and SaaS governance cover?

Software asset management must connect discovery with entitlements and license rules; an installed-software count alone does not prove license consumption or compliance.

  • Widely Use Range - This NetumScan Handheld USB barcode scanner can be used in supermarkets, convenience stores, warehouse, library, bookstore, drugstore, retail shop for file management, inventory tracking and POS(point of sale), etc.

For complex publishers, test license metrics, product normalization, suites and bundles, entitlement records, maintenance and support rights, upgrade and downgrade rights, virtualization and mobility rules, SaaS subscription usage, license reclamation, audit reports, contract terms, and renewal ownership. Flexera One is the clearest specialist candidate in this comparison, while ServiceNow offers a dedicated SAM product for organizations already standardizing on ServiceNow.

SaaS governance needs a separate evaluation. Ask whether the tool can discover usage through identity, expense, browser, endpoint, or application APIs; distinguish purchased seats from active users; identify shadow IT; track renewal terms; remove access during offboarding; and record business owner, technical owner, cost center, and data classification.

How do ITAM pricing models compare?

ITAM prices cannot be compared directly until the organization models its own users, endpoints, servers, network devices, SaaS seats, modules, integrations, support, and implementation work.

Pricing model What usually drives cost Risk to model
Per asset Counted hardware, software, or configuration items Definitions of “asset” and tier thresholds vary
Per agent or technician Users who administer or use the service desk Asset growth may be cheap while additional staff costs more
Asset Units Weighted types such as endpoints, servers, storage, and SaaS users A mixed estate may consume far more units than its device count suggests
Per endpoint Managed devices Servers, virtual machines, network devices, and unmanaged assets may be separate
Module or add-on Discovery, API, SAM, automation, remote control, or reporting The advertised base price may not cover the core use case
Custom enterprise quote Scope, modules, users, assets, support, region, and services Implementation and renewal costs may be difficult to estimate publicly
Self-hosted plus operations Software license plus infrastructure, staff, security, backup, and support Free software can still have substantial total cost of ownership

Request a five-year total-cost model including license or hosting fees, implementation, data cleanup, integrations, consultants, administrators, support, upgrades, backups, and migration. Compare at least 50 assets for a small team, 250 end-user devices, 1,000 mixed assets, and a larger estate with servers and network equipment if those scenarios resemble the organization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should you test before buying?

  1. Import real data: use procurement records, endpoint exports, HR records, contracts, and a sample of manually maintained assets.
  2. Deploy discovery gradually: test remote workers, segmented networks, cloud accounts, powered-off devices, virtual machines, containers, and security-agent compatibility.
  3. Measure reconciliation: identify duplicate identities, stale records, conflicting serial numbers, and source-precedence behavior.
  4. Run lifecycle workflows: purchase, receipt, assignment, transfer, repair, replacement, renewal, offboarding, loss, retirement, disposal, and audit.
  5. Test software rules: load a real suite, entitlement, upgrade right, virtualization case, SaaS subscription, and renewal record.
  6. Test integrations: confirm whether Intune, Configuration Manager, Entra ID, Active Directory, LDAP, Jamf, Apple Business Manager, Google Workspace, AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, VMware, security tools, HR, finance, procurement, and service desks are native, API-based, one-way, bidirectional, included, or separately paid.
  7. Test governance: verify SSO, RBAC, audit logs, encryption, data residency, API permissions, rate limits, backup responsibility, and export of assets, relationships, attachments, and history.
  8. Test reporting: produce separate views for IT, finance, procurement, security, managers, auditors, and service-desk agents.

How should you implement ITAM?

Implementation should begin with data ownership and lifecycle rules, not with a dashboard or a discovery scan.

  1. Define the asset taxonomy: distinguish end-user devices, servers, network equipment, storage, software, SaaS, cloud resources, containers, peripherals, leases, and non-IP assets.
  2. Define lifecycle states: ordered, received, in stock, deployed, assigned, in repair, lost, returned, retired, disposed, and archived.
  3. Assign authoritative sources: connect procurement, finance, HR, identity, endpoint management, security, cloud, and service-desk systems with documented field ownership.
  4. Clean existing records: standardize serial numbers, owners, locations, vendors, product names, dates, and identifiers before importing.
  5. Deploy in phases: start with managed endpoints and one business unit, then add network, cloud, servers, SaaS, contractors, and remote locations.
  6. Reconcile duplicates: establish matching rules and a human review process for uncertain records.
  7. Automate control points: connect employee onboarding and offboarding, purchase approvals, warranty alerts, renewals, license reclamation, refresh planning, and disposal certificates.
  8. Measure data quality: track missing owners, stale scans, duplicate assets, unassigned devices, expired contracts, and records without disposal status.
  9. Document recovery and exit: test backups, exports, API access, and the process for migrating assets and history to another platform.

Common ITAM failure modes

  • Discovery failure: remote workers are off-network, agents are blocked, network segments cannot be scanned, cloud accounts are disconnected, or duplicate device identities create false counts.
  • Inventory-governance failure: procurement data never reaches ITAM, retired equipment remains active, employees retain assets after offboarding, or finance and IT use different identifiers.
  • License failure: installed software is treated as proof of license consumption, SaaS seats are counted without activity data, bundled products are misread, or virtualization and downgrade rights are ignored.
  • Pricing failure: buyers compare per-agent, per-asset, Asset Unit, and custom pricing without modeling the same organization or including API, discovery, support, and implementation costs.
  • Security failure: agents collect unexpected data, SaaS integrations receive excessive permissions, data residency is unsuitable, audit logs are unavailable, or offboarding leaves API tokens active.

Which adjacent tool category might be better?

Choose endpoint management when device configuration, patching, security, and remote control are the primary requirements. Choose a discovery-first product when unknown infrastructure is the main risk. Choose a SAM specialist when licensing exposure is the main financial concern. Choose a CMDB-focused platform when service dependencies matter more than financial asset tracking. Choose open-source ITAM when self-hosting and low software cost outweigh automation and vendor support. Choose an ITSM suite when tickets, requests, changes, and service workflows are the operational center.

Final recommendations

  • Choose ServiceNow when a large enterprise already uses ServiceNow or needs ITAM integrated with enterprise workflows, CMDB, procurement, HR, and finance.
  • Choose Flexera One when software licensing, SaaS governance, hybrid environments, cloud, containers, or audit readiness are the central problems.
  • Choose Lansweeper when broad agentless and agent-based discovery and infrastructure visibility come first.
  • Choose ManageEngine AssetExplorer when a small or midsize organization wants conventional ITAM with public asset-based pricing and lifecycle features.
  • Choose Freshservice when an approachable SaaS service desk and ITAM should share tickets, workflows, CMDB data, and discovery.
  • Choose Ivanti Neurons for ITAM when the organization is already standardized on Ivanti endpoint or service-management products.
  • Choose Snipe-IT when the requirement is a low-cost or self-hosted register for ownership, checkout, serial numbers, tags, and lifecycle records.
  • Choose Jira Service Management Assets when Jira is already the operational hub and asset context must live alongside engineering and service workflows.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best IT asset management software for a small business?

Snipe-IT is often the better fit for a small business that mainly needs ownership, assignment, checkout, serial numbers, tags, and lifecycle records. ManageEngine AssetExplorer and Freshservice are stronger candidates when automated discovery, service-desk workflows, or a SaaS deployment are also required.

Is Snipe-IT really free?

Snipe-IT’s self-hosted software is presented as free, but hosting, backups, security, upgrades, monitoring, recovery, and staff administration still create costs. Hosted Snipe-IT plans add maintenance, upgrades, backups, and support, with prices shown separately by the vendor.

What is the best ITAM software for software-license management?

Flexera One IT Asset Management is the strongest specialist candidate for complex software licensing, entitlements, hybrid environments, SaaS, cloud, containers, and license optimization. ServiceNow Software Asset Management is another strong option when the organization already operates a broader ServiceNow platform.

Is automated discovery enough for IT asset management?

Automated discovery is not enough by itself because discovery may not establish ownership, purchase history, warranty, accounting value, license rights, disposal status, or complete coverage of remote and unmanaged systems. Reliable ITAM requires normalization, reconciliation, authoritative data sources, and governance.

Why can Freshservice pricing be difficult to compare?

Freshservice’s current ITAM model uses weighted Asset Units rather than a simple device count. End-user devices and SaaS users consume one unit, while servers, virtual machines, and network devices consume four units, so a mixed infrastructure estate may cost more than its endpoint count suggests.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: shortlist by problem, not by feature count. ServiceNow is the enterprise workflow choice, Flexera One is the complex-licensing choice, Lansweeper is the discovery choice, ManageEngine is the value-oriented conventional ITAM choice, Freshservice is the approachable ITSM-plus-ITAM choice, and Snipe-IT is the low-cost self-hosted register. Validate discovery coverage, reconciliation, licensing depth, integrations, deployment, and five-year total cost before signing.
