Choose a product labeled gentle and fragrance-free if dryness or sensitivity is a concern, use it without scrubbing, and follow with moisturizer while your skin is still damp. The guidance below helps you compare current products without treating an ingredient name or marketing claim as proof of superior results.
What makes a face wash a good choice for dry skin?
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says dry skin does better with a hydrating cleanser. Its advice is to favor gentle, fragrance-free skin care products when dryness or sensitivity is an issue. That is a useful selection principle, not a ranking of particular face washes: the guidance does not compare currently sold products head to head. AAD guidance on skin care in your 20s and its dry-skin recommendations support the category-level advice.
Read scent claims carefully
For dry or sensitive skin, look for “fragrance-free” rather than assuming “unscented” means the same thing. AAD notes that an unscented product may still contain chemicals used to mask odors. Check the product’s current label; a front-of-package claim alone does not tell you whether a formula suits your skin.
Use ingredients as clues, not a scorecard
Glycerin and hyaluronic acid are humectants associated with hydration, while ceramides help skin retain moisture. AAD discusses these ingredients in skin-care guidance, including guidance for people taking isotretinoin, but that does not establish that a rinse-off face wash containing one of them will deliver a particular clinical benefit. The ingredient list can help you compare formulas; it cannot, by itself, show concentration, predict your personal tolerance, or prove that one cleanser performs better than another. AAD’s isotretinoin skin-care advice provides ingredient context, and its skincare guide discusses ceramides and hydration.

How to compare hydrating face washes
Because no named cleanser is established as the winner by the guidance cited here, compare candidates against your own needs instead of relying on a universal “best” list. Confirm the current packaging or manufacturer ingredient list before buying; formulas, sizes, prices, and availability can change.
- Skin need: Start with whether your skin is dry, sensitive, rosacea-prone, or being treated for acne. One cleanser is not necessarily right for every skin type or treatment routine.
- Label and scent: If dryness or sensitivity is a concern, prioritize gentle and fragrance-free wording. Do not treat “unscented” as interchangeable with “fragrance-free.”
- How it fits your routine: Consider whether a once-evening cleanse is enough for you, or whether you need the general routine of morning, evening, and after heavy sweating. Your skin’s tolerance matters.
- How it feels in use: Choose a product you can apply with fingertips, rinse thoroughly, and use without scrubbing. Technique is part of a gentle cleanse.
- What follows cleansing: Plan for moisturizer as a separate step if your skin is dry. Do not rely on a cleanser’s marketing promise as a substitute for post-wash care.
- Current product details: Verify the current formula and label rather than assuming an older ingredient list, product description, or review still applies.
Dermatologist Joyce Davis, MD, FAAD, told AAD: “You want to make sure your cleanser puts moisture into the skin, rather than taking it out,” in AAD’s winter skin guidance. This is a useful way to think about the goal of cleansing, not evidence that a particular product adds moisture or outperforms another.

How often should you wash dry or sensitive skin?
AAD’s general face-washing advice is to wash once in the morning, once at night, and after heavy sweating. For people with dry or sensitive skin, dermatologist Marisa Garshick, MD, says washing once daily in the evening may be sufficient. There is no need to force the general schedule if it does not suit your skin; observe how your skin responds. AAD also recommends introducing one new product at a time so you can assess tolerance. See AAD’s face-washing guidance and its skincare guide.
How to wash without adding unnecessary irritation
- Wet your face with lukewarm water. Avoid hot water.
- Apply a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser without alcohol using your fingertips. Do not scrub or use rough friction.
- Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
- Pat your face dry with a soft towel. Avoid rubbing.
- Apply moisturizer if your skin is dry or itchy, while it is still damp. For a routine that includes treatment, AAD places cleanser first, followed by medication or treatment if used, then moisturizer and/or sunscreen. AAD explains skin-care product order here.
When skin conditions or treatments change the choice
Rosacea-prone skin
AAD recommends fragrance-free products, gentle cleansing with fingertips, thorough rinsing, and moisturizing after cleansing for rosacea-prone skin. Its rosacea skin-care tips offer condition-specific guidance; a general product list cannot account for every person’s triggers or treatment plan.

While taking isotretinoin
AAD advises people taking isotretinoin to use gentle or emulsion cleansers, avoid abrasive scrubs, and moisturize after cleansing. Follow your prescribing clinician’s advice for your treatment rather than choosing a cleanser solely on a general dry-skin recommendation. Persistent irritation or a diagnosed skin condition is a reason to seek individualized clinical guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What “best” can—and cannot—mean here
The available dermatology guidance supports practical criteria for selecting and using a hydrating cleanser; it does not provide a current controlled comparison of named face washes, confirm manufacturers’ current formulas, or establish product prices or availability. So the most defensible answer is a selection method: for dry or sensitive skin, start with gentle, fragrance-free options, use a non-scrubbing technique, and moisturize after washing. A specific cleanser’s performance and suitability cannot be inferred from its name or a single ingredient alone.
