If you want horror atmosphere with plenty of consequential combat, start with the Resident Evil 4 remake. It gives you shooting, close combat, knife parries, and weapon switching—but it is still survival horror, so danger and resource management remain part of the experience. The Dead Space remake is another combat-focused option for players who accept a stronger survival-horror frame. For combat first and horror flavor second, consider DOOM Eternal.
How these games balance action and survival
“More action” does not necessarily mean “no survival pressure.” The games below differ in how closely they stick to survival horror, how much combat agency they offer, and whether horror or action is the main attraction. The official descriptions support these distinctions, but they do not provide a shared scale for measuring combat frequency or scariness.

Best fit: Resident Evil 4 (2023 remake)
The remake is the clearest match if you want a horror game that regularly lets you answer threats with combat. PlayStation describes a mix of shooting and close combat, with a knife that can enable parries, stealth kills, or last-second escapes. Quick weapon-swapping gives you another way to react when a fight changes, while ammunition crafting and inventory sorting help manage your gear. These tools create agency; they do not mean ammunition and supplies are irrelevant.
Capcom announced the remake of the 2005 game for March 24, 2023, and describes the series as survival horror in which players use weapons and other items to escape terrifying situations. That label matters: choose this for action within survival horror, not for an experience free of vulnerability or resource decisions. The US PlayStation listing classifies it as Horror, Adventure, and Action, lists PS4 and PS5, and says newcomers can enjoy it without prior knowledge of the series.

For science-fiction combat with a survival-horror frame: Dead Space (2023 remake)
Dead Space puts combat in a bleak science-fiction setting: Isaac Clarke, an engineer aboard the USG Ishimura, faces Necromorphs and fights for survival. EA calls the 2023 release a remake of a survival-horror classic. Its combat identity may appeal if you want to fight the threats you encounter, but the official framing makes clear that tension and survival remain part of the premise.
EA announced the remake as available January 27, 2023, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. EA producer Phillippe Ducharme described the remake’s goal as “honoring the legacy of the original, while enhancing it with the power of today’s hardware.” That is his statement of intent, not an independent measure of the game’s quality.

However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
For action first, horror second: DOOM Eternal
If your priority is intense combat and you are flexible about getting a conventional horror game, DOOM Eternal is the conditional pick. PlayStation emphasizes fast, “push-forward” first-person combat, speed, and power, with demon fighting at the center. That makes it a horror-adjacent action game—not a survival-horror substitute built around the same kind of scarcity and vulnerability as the other two.

- Pick Resident Evil 4 for the most directly supported blend of horror atmosphere and varied combat tools, while accepting survival-horror resource management.
- Pick Dead Space for science-fiction horror and combat against Necromorphs, provided you are comfortable with an explicit fight-for-survival premise.
- Pick DOOM Eternal if fast first-person combat matters more than a survival-horror structure or sustained vulnerability.
