The Bambu Lab R1 is not a 3D printer. Announced on September 22, 2026, it is a 55 W CO₂ laser cutter and engraver. That makes it a different kind of machine from the FDM 3D printers covered here. If you want to print plastic parts at home, consider the Prusa CORE One+, Elegoo Centauri Carbon 2 Combo, Creality K1C or Prusa CORE One L instead; none is a direct alternative to the R1.
Why the Bambu Lab R1 is not a 3D-printer alternative
Bambu Lab describes the R1 as its first product line beyond 3D printing: a 55 W CO₂ laser cutter and engraver. The company says it cuts and engraves wood, transparent acrylic, leather, paper and fabric, and engraves glass, stone and coated metals. It also claims cutting and engraving speeds of up to 1000 mm/s and describes the machine as suitable for a home workbench. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent test results.
A laser processes or marks material; an FDM printer builds a part by depositing filament layer by layer. If you want to make three-dimensional plastic parts, compare 3D printers. If you want to cut or engrave sheet materials, you need to compare laser machines instead. The available evidence confirms the R1’s category but does not establish a shortlist of competing laser cutters.
Home FDM printers to consider
The options below are not ranked as direct R1 replacements. They illustrate different choices within home FDM printing. Build dimensions and review observations in this table are reported by TechRadar’s 2026 guide; the K1C speed figure is Creality Lab data cited by Creality.

| Printer | What stands out | Trade-offs or limits |
|---|---|---|
| Original Prusa CORE One+ | Prusa describes an enclosed CoreXY printer with a Nextruder direct-drive extruder and a 55 °C chamber. Prusa says it can be configured and used offline, including slicing and firmware updates. | TechRadar’s 2026 guide lists the Original Prusa Core One, not the CORE One+, with a 250 × 220 × 270 mm build area. It praises print quality and integration with PrusaSlicer and Prusa Connect, while noting price, noise and the lack of standard AI camera monitoring. Those review findings apply to the model named in that guide; do not assume every detail carries over to the One+. |
| Elegoo Centauri Carbon 2 Combo | TechRadar lists a 256 × 256 × 256 mm build area and an integrated four-filament color system. Its reviewer reports favorable print quality in their own tests. | TechRadar identifies external filament storage and purge waste as drawbacks. The review’s print-quality result is the reviewer’s finding, not an independent result established here. |
| Creality K1C | Creality describes it as a CoreXY printer and reports typical printing speed of 300 mm/s, labeled as Creality Lab data. TechRadar’s guide describes it as fast and with an AI camera. | TechRadar notes that print quality can be affected by speed. The 300 mm/s figure is Creality Lab data, not a universal real-world speed for every print. |
| Prusa CORE One L | TechRadar describes it as a larger, enclosed, single-filament printer. | TechRadar flags a higher entry price and no standard multifilament printing. A build-area figure is not stated in the cited guide. |
Choose by the job, not by a headline speed
Decide whether you need an enclosure
Start with the materials and projects you expect to print. The CORE One+ is described by Prusa as enclosed and having a 55 °C chamber, while TechRadar describes the CORE One L as enclosed too. The cited information does not establish a normalized, material-by-material comparison across these printers, so verify compatibility for your intended filament and setup before buying.
Check the build area against your largest part
Compare the printer’s usable build area with the dimensions of the largest object you expect to make. TechRadar gives 250 × 220 × 270 mm for the Original Prusa Core One and 256 × 256 × 256 mm for the Centauri Carbon 2 Combo. The cited guide does not provide comparable dimensions for the CORE One+ or CORE One L here, so do not infer them from the similarly named model.

Decide whether multicolor printing is worth its waste and complexity
The Centauri Carbon 2 Combo’s integrated four-filament color system may suit projects that benefit from multiple colors. TechRadar also flags purge waste and external filament storage. If you mostly print single-color functional parts, weigh those costs against whether you will actually use color changes; the available evidence does not quantify the amount of purge material.
Consider local operation and software workflow
If you prefer to keep setup and operation local, Prusa says the CORE One+ can be configured and used offline, including slicing and firmware updates. TechRadar cites PrusaSlicer and Prusa Connect as strengths for the Original Prusa Core One; its guide also notes that this model lacks standard AI camera monitoring. Treat those details as specific to the model and configuration described by the source.

Balance speed against print quality
Creality’s K1C speed figure is a typical 300 mm/s reported from Creality Lab data. TechRadar notes that print quality can be affected by speed. A speed figure alone does not establish how quickly a particular part will finish or what quality it will have, so consider the balance you need rather than selecting solely by the largest number.
What to verify before choosing
- Confirm the exact model and revision: CORE One+ and CORE One are not interchangeable names, and the cited TechRadar guide lists the CORE One.
- Check current build dimensions, material and nozzle compatibility, and whether the printer supports the filament types you plan to use.
- Decide whether enclosure, offline operation, a camera or multicolor capability matters for your projects and preferences.
- Compare current purchase price, maintenance needs and software workflow for your location. The cited material does not provide a normalized price comparison.
- For the K1C, verify current specifications with Creality before relying on them; the 300 mm/s figure is explicitly Creality Lab data.
Which one should you consider?
For an enclosed printer with explicitly described offline capability, the Prusa CORE One+ is a candidate to investigate. For integrated four-filament color printing, consider the Centauri Carbon 2 Combo while accounting for the review’s purge-waste and storage caveats. The K1C is a speed-oriented option, but its cited lab speed is not a guarantee of print time or quality. The CORE One L is described as a larger enclosed single-filament choice, with a higher entry price noted by TechRadar. These distinctions can guide a 3D-printer search, but they do not make any of these machines substitutes for a CO₂ laser cutter.
