For a Guitar Hero-style guitar game on PC, start with Clone Hero. Choose YARG if you want a broader band setup, or Fortnite Festival for an official current option on PC and consoles. Rock Band 4 is mainly worth considering if you already own it and compatible instruments. Before buying a guitar controller, check its exact model and platform compatibility: support is not universal.
Best Guitar Hero alternatives at a glance
| Game | Best for | Platforms and play | How songs are supplied | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clone Hero | Guitar Hero-style play, especially on PC | The official site lists Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS. Supports guitar, drums, game controllers, and keyboards. | Official downloads are available through its launcher; users can also add charts. | Check support for your specific guitar and platform. User-provided charts are not automatically licensed. |
| YARG | Players who want a full band game | Guitar, bass, drums, keys, vocals, and local multiplayer for up to 32 players. | The official setlist has over 100 licensed songs; the project also supports user-added content. | It is community-developed and evolving. An imported chart does not establish permission to use the recording or chart. |
| Fortnite Festival | A current official option on PC and consoles | A Harmonix-developed mode within Fortnite, with Pro Lead and Pro Bass. | Official in-game music content. | Some legacy Rock Band guitars are supported, but compatibility depends on the specific instrument and platform. |
| Rock Band 4 | Existing owners with compatible hardware or purchased content | Console game; check current platform store and service details in your region. | Previously acquired content remains relevant to owners. | GamesHub’s 2026 overview reports that weekly DLC ended January 25, 2024, while live services, including online play, continued. |
| Stage Tour | Players tracking an upcoming game | T3 reported a planned release for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. | Not established here. | As of October 4, 2026, the reported December 10, 2026 release is still in the future. Verify launch and controller availability before treating it as purchasable. |
These games differ in platform, instruments, and song sources, so raw song-library totals are not directly comparable. The YARG figure is its official setlist claim, not a count of every chart a player might add.

Which alternative should you choose?
Choose Clone Hero for the closest PC starting point
Clone Hero is the clearest fit if you want the familiar note-lane guitar experience and already have a compatible instrument. Its official site lists support for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS, as well as guitar controllers, MIDI drums, game controllers, and keyboards. The project’s v1.1 release notes list 13 new songs for the official setlist and describe official song downloads through the launcher.
Choose YARG for guitar plus a band
YARG expands the setup beyond guitar: its official site lists guitar, bass, drums, keys, vocals, and local multiplayer for up to 32 players. It describes its official setlist as containing over 100 licensed songs. The project is free and open source, and its site states, “YARG stands firmly against all forms of piracy.” Use official content channels or legally distributed material rather than assuming that an available chart gives you rights to the music.
#1 Best Overall
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
Choose Fortnite Festival for an official current option
Fortnite Festival is a Harmonix-developed mode inside Fortnite, with Pro Lead and Pro Bass. GamesHub’s 2026 roundup identifies it as an option on PC and consoles and reports support for some Rock Band 4 guitars. That does not mean every legacy guitar works: confirm the instrument version, platform, and connection method before relying on it.
Keep Rock Band 4 in view if you already own it
Rock Band 4 can still make sense for existing owners with compatible hardware and content. GamesHub’s 2026 roundup says weekly DLC ended on January 25, 2024, while live services, including online play, continued. That overview does not confirm current store availability or service status in every country, so check your console’s store and the current service information before buying.

Wait for Stage Tour’s actual launch details
T3 reported that Stage Tour was planned for December 10, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, and that a demo showed a Kramer wireless guitar controller. Because that date is still ahead as of October 4, 2026, this is a prospective option—not a released alternative to recommend as available. Confirm the launch, retail hardware, and official compatibility details when they are published.
How to play a Guitar Hero-style game on a modern PC
- Pick the game for your setup. Start with Clone Hero for guitar-focused play, or choose YARG if you want more band instruments. Fortnite Festival is another route if you prefer an official in-game music experience.
- Confirm the controller connection. Identify the exact guitar model and whether it needs a receiver, adapter, or a particular connection mode. A game’s general support for guitar controllers does not certify every model.
- Install the game and use its official content options. Clone Hero’s v1.1 release notes describe official downloads through the launcher. For other charts or recordings, use material distributed legally; importing a chart does not grant rights to copyrighted content.
- Calibrate audio and video timing. If notes seem consistently early or late, adjust the game’s timing calibration before assuming the guitar is missing inputs.
- Test the whole chain. Check that the computer recognizes the guitar, that the game sees its inputs, and that the selected instrument or part is active. If inputs fail, revisit the connection mode and device-specific setup.
What to check before buying a guitar controller
Compatibility depends on the guitar’s specific edition and the platform—not just its brand or appearance. GamesRadar+ reports testing the CRKD Gibson Les Paul Pro Edition with Clone Hero on PC, Rock Band 4 on PS4 and PS5, Fortnite Festival on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S, and older PS3 titles. Those are reviewer test results, not a universal compatibility certification.

- This Certified Refurbished product is tested and certified to look and work like new. The refurbishing process includes functionality testing, basic cleaning, inspection, and repackaging. The product ships with all relevant accessories, a minimum 90-day warranty, and may arrive in a generic box. Only select sellers who maintain a high performance bar may offer Certified Refurbished products on Amazon.com
- PS4 Guitar Hero Live
For one reported setup detail, GamesRadar+ says Fortnite Festival Pro mode on PS5 required enabling “Always Display Pro Parts.” Check the review’s setup notes and the controller maker’s current specifications for the precise model you are considering. Match a PlayStation or Xbox edition to your console, and verify any receiver or adapter requirements. Do not assume that a controller tested on one system or game mode will behave the same way on another.
How song libraries and licensing differ
- Clone Hero: The official v1.1 release notes list 13 songs added to its official setlist and official downloads through the launcher. Other user-provided charts are separate from that official content.
- YARG: Its official site claims over 100 licensed songs in its official setlist. This count does not describe all possible user-added content.
- Fortnite Festival: The game provides official content within Fortnite; check the current in-game offering for available tracks.
- Rock Band 4: Existing owners may still use content they acquired, subject to current platform and service availability. The cited 2026 overview reports the end of weekly DLC, not the removal of previously acquired content.
Do not treat a chart’s availability for download as proof that its recording or chart is licensed. Stick to official content channels and legally distributed material.

Which platforms have a current option?
PC
Clone Hero is the most direct starting point for guitar-controller play. YARG suits players who want several instrument parts, while Fortnite Festival offers an official mode within Fortnite. For all three, check the exact controller connection and calibrate timing after setup.
PlayStation and Xbox
Fortnite Festival is the modern official option identified in GamesHub’s 2026 overview. Existing Rock Band 4 owners may also have a usable setup, but check current local store and service details. Console support can depend on whether the guitar is the PlayStation or Xbox edition and whether it requires a receiver or adapter.
