For a registered nonprofit seeking donation forms, events, and donor-management tools, Givebutter and Zeffy are options to compare. For personal fundraising, first confirm that a service accepts individual campaigns in your country; nonprofit-focused services may not fit. Compare the full cost—including platform fees, payment processing, recurring-donation charges, and optional donor contributions—before choosing.
Which GoFundMe alternative fits your fundraiser?
There is no single best replacement for every campaign. A personal emergency fundraiser, a nonprofit’s ongoing donor program, a creative project, and a creator’s recurring-support page have different requirements. Start by identifying your fundraiser type, then check eligibility and features with the service itself.
- For a nonprofit that wants an integrated fundraising toolkit: Givebutter lists donation forms, fundraising pages, events, auctions, donor-management tools, marketing, and integrations.
- For a nonprofit considering an optional-contribution model: Zeffy says it serves nonprofits and is funded by optional donor contributions. Verify that your organization qualifies and inspect the checkout experience.
- For a personal fundraiser: Do not assume a nonprofit-focused service accepts individual campaigns. Confirm eligibility, supported countries, payout arrangements, and payment methods before building a campaign.
- For a creative project, merchandise drive, or recurring creator support: Kickstarter, Indiegogo, Bonfire, and Patreon are examples named in Givebutter’s vendor-authored alternatives article. They serve different use cases; check each service’s official terms rather than treating them as direct substitutes for charitable fundraising.
GoFundMe’s own help page says starting and managing a fundraiser is free, but transaction fees are deducted from donations. In its US example, a single $50 donation nets $48.25 after a 2.9% plus $0.30 transaction fee. The same page lists a 5% fee for recurring donations. See GoFundMe’s fee information.
Compare the full cost, not just the platform fee
A platform fee and a payment-processing fee are different charges. Optional donor tips are a separate way some services fund their operations, and the organizer’s checkout settings can affect who covers costs. A claim of “no platform fee” does not, by itself, establish that every donation reaches the fundraiser without deductions.

How to choose a fundraising platform
- Confirm eligibility. Check whether the platform accepts your fundraiser type—personal cause, registered nonprofit, school, creator, or project—and supports your country.
- Map every potential charge. Look for the platform rate, payment-processing percentage, fixed per-donation charge, recurring-donation fee, and any costs the organizer can choose to absorb or pass through.
- Match the tools to the campaign. Check whether you need one-time or recurring donations, peer-to-peer pages, events, auctions, or donation forms. Nonprofits may also need donor records, receipts, a CRM, communications, or integrations.
- Review payments and payouts. Confirm accepted payment methods, transfer timing, refund and dispute handling, and when funds can be used. GoFundMe notes that available payment methods vary by fundraiser.
- Walk through donor checkout. See whether the service requests an optional tip, offers fee coverage, or applies charges another way. Make sure the donor-facing explanation is clear and consistent with your campaign.
- Verify details before launch. Pricing, eligibility, payment options, and features can change. Use the platform’s current official pricing and help pages as the final authority.

When GoFundMe may still be the better fit
If its campaign format and reach suit your fundraiser, GoFundMe remains a reasonable option to evaluate. It says there is no charge to start and manage a fundraiser, but its transaction and recurring-donation fees affect the amount received. Compare that net result with alternatives using your likely donation amounts, donation frequency, and donor checkout preferences—not the headline platform fee alone. Its published fee details are on the GoFundMe Help Center.
