The right gaming headset depends first on your platform, then on how you balance sound, microphone quality, comfort, connection options and price. RTINGS names the Audeze Maxwell 2 its best PC gaming headset, SoundGuys recommends the Razer BlackShark V3 Pro for competitive gaming, and RTINGS picks the Turtle Beach Stealth 600 (Gen 3) in its under-$100 guide. Those are publisher-specific recommendations, not a universal ranking; check the exact console or PC version and current price before buying.
How to choose a gaming headset
Start with your platform and exact model
Compatibility can vary by platform and by headset variant, particularly across Xbox and PlayStation models. Check the manufacturer’s current compatibility information for the exact version you plan to buy, and confirm that its connection method works with your computer or console. RTINGS publishes separate PC, PlayStation and Xbox guidance, while SoundGuys includes platform compatibility among its selection criteria. RTINGS’ 2026 PC guide and SoundGuys’ 2026 guide provide useful starting points.
Match the connection to how you play
A 2.4 GHz USB dongle is a common wireless option for gaming, while Bluetooth can be useful for a phone or another device. Some headsets support both at once, but using multiple wireless connections can affect battery life. Wired or analog support can be valuable when you want to avoid charging or use a compatible device without a wireless receiver. Check which modes the specific headset supports: wireless does not necessarily mean it also works wired.
Judge the microphone by voice pickup and noise handling
A “powerful microphone” is not a technical category. For voice chat, look for review findings about whether speech sounds natural and clear, and how well the mic handles background noise. A boom mic gives you a close pickup position; features such as noise reduction may help, but do not guarantee broadcast-quality audio. Also check the mute control: a flip-up boom can make muting quick, while some wireless models lack an integrated backup microphone.
#1 Best Overall
- TRIFORCE TITANIUM 50 MM DRIVERS — Our cutting-edge proprietary design divides the driver into 3 parts for the individual tuning of highs, mids, and lows—producing brighter, clearer audio with richer highs and more powerful lows
- HYPERCLEAR CARDIOID MIC — An improved pickup pattern ensures more voice and less noise as it tapers off towards the mic’s back and sides, with the sweet spot easily placed at the mouth because of the mic’s bendable design
- ADVANCED PASSIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — Sturdy closed earcups fully cover the ears to prevent noise from leaking into the headset, with its cushions providing a closer seal for more sound isolation
- LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN WITH MEMORY FOAM EAR CUSHIONS — At just 240 g, the headset features thicker headband padding and memory foam ear cushions with leatherette to keep gaming in peak form during grueling tournaments and training sessions
- WORKS WITH WINDOWS SONIC — Make the most of the headset’s powerful drivers by pairing it with lifelike surround sound that places audio with pinpoint accuracy, heightening in-game awareness and immersion
Think about fit, isolation and sound
Comfort is personal, but weight and long-session pressure deserve attention. Closed-back isolation can help reduce surrounding noise; open-back designs let more sound pass in and out, making them better suited to quiet rooms. For game cues, consider the headset’s reviewed sound tuning and positional performance rather than relying on stereo, spatial-audio or driver-size labels alone. Stereo describes channel reproduction; software spatial audio is a separate processing feature, and neither a marketing label nor a driver measurement by itself proves that footsteps will be easier to locate.
