Which handheld should you choose?
The right choice depends first on how you want to access your games. The Ally models offer Windows PC gaming alongside Xbox streaming options. The other listed handhelds are alternatives for cloud access; the cited Xbox guide does not establish them as equivalent native Xbox-library devices.

The cited official sources do not provide current region-specific prices or independent, side-by-side tests of battery life, performance, comfort, streaming latency, or value. Treat the Ally X specifications as manufacturer-published details, not proof of a universal best buy.
How you can play games from an Xbox library
“Playing your Xbox games” can mean several different things. The access method determines whether the game runs on the handheld, on your console, or on Microsoft’s cloud servers—and whether you need a particular entitlement, subscription, or connection.

Install a supported Windows PC version
The Ally runs Windows 11 and can install supported PC games, including games from Xbox PC storefronts and other PC storefronts. A license for an Xbox console version does not automatically include a Windows PC version. Check the game’s store listing and entitlement before assuming you can download it to the handheld. Use Xbox Play Anywhere when the game qualifies
For a supported Play Anywhere title, one purchase enables play across Xbox console, PC, and Xbox Ally, with progress and achievements carried across those platforms. The eligibility is title-specific, not a blanket conversion of your console library. Stream from your own Xbox with Remote Play
Remote Play streams a game installed on your Xbox console to a supported device. The console must have Remote features enabled and be on or in Sleep mode; an internet connection and supported game and device are also required. Remote Play therefore gives you access to games on your console, but it does not install those console versions on the handheld. ASUS notes that online console multiplayer, including through Remote Play, requires one of the membership tiers named on its support page; check the current Xbox terms for your account and region. Stream through Xbox Cloud Gaming
Cloud Gaming runs supported games from Microsoft’s cloud rather than your console or a local installation. Availability depends on the selected game, device, region, and qualifying subscription. Xbox’s October 2025 update said members of Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, and Essential could stream from a collection of more than 1,000 owned games on supported devices at that time. Download for offline play where supported
Cloud streaming requires an internet connection. A local PC installation may work offline if the specific game supports offline play. Xbox’s December 2025 guide says Game Pass titles can be downloaded to a preferred console, PC, or handheld for offline play, but the title and device combination must support the game. Check handheld compatibility before choosing a game
Xbox’s Handheld Compatibility program uses distinct labels: Handheld Optimized, Mostly Compatible, Unsupported, and Not tested. “Not tested” does not mean “Unsupported”; it means the compatibility status has not been established by that program. Windows Performance Fit is a separate expected-performance indicator. Xbox says “should play well” typically means 30 FPS or better on the device, while “should play great” is expected around 60 FPS or better. Those are program expectations, not a promise of measured frame rates for every setup.

Xbox’s December 2025 Cloud Gaming guide recommends at least 20 Mbps for a stable cloud gaming connection. That is a speed recommendation, not a guarantee: network stability and latency also affect the experience. Remote Play likewise needs internet access and a correctly configured console. Most cloud games require a gamepad, according to Xbox’s guide, which lists Microsoft, 8BitDo, GameSir, Backbone, and DualSense options. The Ally devices have built-in controls, so this should not be read as a requirement to buy a separate controller for them.
