If you want the closest thing to The Elder Scrolls: Arena with more contemporary controls and display support, try Arena Rebuilt 0.9.9 Beta—but expect an unfinished fan project and bring a compatible original copy of Arena. If you would rather stay with official mainline games, Daggerfall is the next chapter and Morrowind is a later continuation; neither is documented here as a fix for Arena’s dated presentation.
Which game should you try first?
Choose based on what you want to keep from Arena. For its early-series world and adventure with a modernization effort, start with Arena Rebuilt. For an official continuation of the series, move to Daggerfall. If you want a later mainline chapter, consider Morrowind.
| Option | Why it fits | Modernization and setup |
|---|---|---|
| Arena Rebuilt 0.9.9 Beta | A fan reconstruction of Arena itself. | Publicly playable beta for Windows and Linux, with modern-control and display-support goals. It requires a compatible original Arena installation and does not include Bethesda game data; it remains unfinished. |
| The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall | The next mainline series entry, set amid conflict around High Rock and the Iliac Bay. | The official source confirms the game and story context, but does not establish that the original release resolves dated controls or presentation. |
| The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind | A later mainline chapter; Bethesda identifies it as the sequel to Daggerfall. | Current platform, edition, and modern-comfort details are not established here. |
Arena Rebuilt: the closest match, with beta caveats
Arena Rebuilt is a community-made reconstruction intended to make Arena more comfortable to play on contemporary systems, rather than an official Bethesda remaster. Its project page reported version 0.9.9 Beta publicly playable on Windows and Linux as of October 3, 2026; the beta page indicated an update on October 4, 2026. That status means it is playable, not finished: expect bugs and remaining presentation work.
You need a legitimate, compatible installation of the original game. The project does not distribute Bethesda game files, so Arena Rebuilt is not a substitute for obtaining those files. Check the project’s compatibility and setup information before proceeding: Arena Rebuilt project.

Daggerfall: stay in the main series
Daggerfall is the direct next mainline entry after Arena. Bethesda’s official game page describes a story set around High Rock, the murder of the King of Daggerfall, and the Numidium. It is the straightforward choice if your priority is continuing the series’ early imperial-era fantasy rather than playing a reconstruction of Arena: Bethesda’s Daggerfall page.
The official information cited here establishes its place in the series and its story, not that the original release has contemporary controls or presentation. If Arena’s dated feel is the main obstacle, treat Daggerfall as a continuity choice rather than a verified modernization.

Morrowind: a later mainline chapter
Bethesda Support identifies Morrowind as the third chapter in The Elder Scrolls series and the sequel to Daggerfall. That makes it an option if you want to move further along the mainline series rather than remain with Arena’s original setting and structure: Bethesda Support’s series clarification.
The available official information does not establish current platform or edition details, or how comfortable a particular version will feel to someone put off by Arena. Check the edition and platform you intend to use before buying or installing.

What about The Elder Scrolls Anthology?
Bethesda describes The Elder Scrolls Anthology as a physical collectible PC box set containing five games, spanning Arena through Skyrim Legendary Edition. It is a retrospective collection, not a modernization of Arena’s interface. Current stock and condition are unverified, so do not assume it is readily available: Bethesda’s Anthology description.
