Terraria is the best all-around fit if you want fighting and exploration alongside the freedom to gather materials and build. It is a 2D side-scrolling sandbox, not a Cuphead-style run-and-gun or a 3D Minecraft-like world. If you prefer construction tied to a story and clear goals, try Dragon Quest Builders 2; for cavern exploration and co-op base-building, consider Core Keeper.

What “like Cuphead and Minecraft” means here

The pairing points to two different pleasures: lively combat and a distinctive action presentation on one hand, and the ability to shape a world through building on the other. Cuphead’s official site describes a game about collecting soul contracts from fearsome foes, with 1930s cartoon inspiration, hand-drawn cel animation, watercolor backgrounds, weapons, super moves, and solo or local co-op play (Cuphead official site). The recommendations below focus on games that combine action with construction, while making clear when a game leans much more heavily toward one side.

Best games for both action and building

Game Best fit Main trade-off
Terraria Combat, exploration, gathering, building, and multiplayer in an open-ended sandbox. It is a 2D side-scrolling sandbox, not Cuphead’s run-and-gun presentation or Minecraft’s 3D format.
Dragon Quest Builders 2 Story-led building, rebuilding projects, characters, and enemies. More directed than a fully open creative sandbox; building also has radius constraints noted in a comparison guide.
Core Keeper Mining, cavern exploration, combat, crafting, farming, building, and co-op. Its focus is a cavern mining sandbox rather than a side-scrolling action game.
Minecraft Dungeons Action in the Minecraft universe, with missions, melee and ranged combat, gear, and co-op. The official description emphasizes missions and combat, not freeform construction.
Valheim Survival, resource gathering, settlement building, farming, and combat. More survival-focused and less directly suited to someone seeking Cuphead-like action.
LEGO Fortnite (Odyssey) An adjacent survival-mode option with building and adjustable combat. It is a mode within Fortnite, not a standalone traditional action platformer; check current naming and availability.

Terraria: the strongest all-around match

Terraria is the clearest recommendation when you want a game that gives real space to both fighting and construction. You can build, gather resources, explore caves, and fight, rather than treating building as a brief diversion from a combat-first campaign. The result is a broad sandbox match for the combined request, even though its action and presentation are quite different from Cuphead’s.

Choose it if you are happy with a side-on 2D world and want to alternate between exploration, combat, and making things. If your main requirement is Cuphead’s run-and-gun structure or its hand-drawn cartoon look, Terraria is not a substitute for that specific experience.

Dragon Quest Builders 2: building with a story and goals

Dragon Quest Builders 2 suits players who want construction framed by characters, story, and a sequence of rebuilding objectives. Square Enix describes the game as a sandbox world with memorable characters and dangerous monsters, where the player works to restore the power of creation to Alefgard. Its official page sums up the premise as: “Gather materials, craft items, and build everything imaginable!” (Square Enix: Dragon Quest Builders).

Compared with an entirely open creative sandbox, this is the more guided choice. A comparison guide updated 14 July 2026 also notes building-radius constraints for the sequel, so it may feel less unconstrained than a player expecting limitless freeform construction would like (Pocket Tactics’ games like Minecraft guide).

Core Keeper: underground exploration and co-op building

Core Keeper is a strong option if you want to mine, explore underground, establish a base, craft, farm, and fight as part of a cavern sandbox. Its Steam listing describes support for one to eight players and gives 27 August 2024 as its full-release date; player count and availability should be checked against the current listing before purchase (Core Keeper on Steam).

Its appeal is the combination of cavern exploration and making a home or base, especially with friends. It is not a close match for Cuphead’s side-scrolling run-and-gun format, so prioritize it for mining, crafting, and co-op rather than for that style of action.

When to choose the action-focused or survival alternatives

Minecraft Dungeons for Minecraft-world combat

Minecraft Dungeons is the option to consider when you want action in the Minecraft universe more than you want to build. Its official description centers on missions, melee and ranged combat, gear, and solo or up-to-four-player co-op (Minecraft Dungeons official page). Since that description does not position it as a freeform builder, it is an action alternative rather than a balanced answer to both halves of the request.

Valheim for survival and settlement-building

Valheim is an adjacent choice for players drawn to gathering resources, building settlements, farming, and combat. Its survival emphasis makes it a less direct pick for someone chiefly seeking a lively action game with construction alongside it. Consider it when the appeal of surviving and developing a settlement matters more than matching Cuphead’s pace or presentation (Pocket Tactics’ games like Minecraft guide).

LEGO Fortnite (Odyssey) for a mode-based alternative

LEGO Fortnite is an adjacent survival-mode option that combines building with adjustable combat, according to Pocket Tactics’ comparison guide. Unlike the other named games, it is a mode within Fortnite rather than a standalone traditional action platformer. Because mode naming and availability can change, check the current Fortnite listing before deciding whether it fits (Pocket Tactics’ games like Minecraft guide).

How to choose among them

  • For the best balance of action and open-ended building: start with Terraria.
  • For a story and defined construction goals: choose Dragon Quest Builders 2.
  • For underground exploration and co-op base-building: choose Core Keeper.
  • For combat in the Minecraft universe: choose Minecraft Dungeons, understanding that its official description does not promise freeform building.
  • For a survival-first settlement game: look at Valheim; for a mode inside a larger game, check LEGO Fortnite (Odyssey).

Perspective and structure matter as much as a feature list. Terraria is side-on and open-ended; Dragon Quest Builders 2 gives building a story framework; Core Keeper centers on caverns and mining; Minecraft Dungeons is mission-led combat. Check each game’s current platform and edition listing for your region before buying, since those details can change.
