IT Pro’s 2022 comparison recommended InfinityFree and ByetHost, but neither was a universal winner. The right fit depended on whether a site needed PHP and databases, how much storage and bandwidth it used, and what limits on support, speed and reliability its owner could accept. The specifications below are figures reported in that historical comparison—not guarantees of what any provider offers today.
Which free web hosts did IT Pro recommend in 2022?
IT Pro singled out InfinityFree and ByetHost, particularly for readers seeking advanced features or generous resources. Its comparison also listed eight alternatives. The table reproduces the figures reported in the 2022 article; current availability and plan limits have not been verified.

These are article-era plan figures, not a present-day ranking or a promise that “unlimited” means unrestricted use. IT Pro cautioned that free hosting can still constrain resources and limit reliability, speed, security, management tools and customer service. Read the provider’s current terms before relying on any allowance.
InfinityFree: the 2022 pick for features
IT Pro described InfinityFree as imposing no forced ads and offering an installer for more than 400 applications, free DNS and SSL, and Cloudflare CDN support. It also noted middling speed. Those are claims from the 2022 comparison, not current service guarantees or independent performance measurements.

For present-day context, InfinityFree’s own feature page, accessed October 4, 2026, lists 5 GB of disk space, unlimited bandwidth, PHP 8.4, MySQL 8.0/MariaDB 11.4, free subdomains, support for bringing a domain, free DNS and SSL, and WordPress installation through Softaculous. The company names students, personal projects, testing or staging, and small organizations as use cases. These are current vendor claims and should not be read back into the 2022 table: InfinityFree’s free hosting features.
ByetHost: a 2022 option with a file-size ceiling
The 2022 article reported 5 GB of disk space and unlimited bandwidth for ByetHost, but also a maximum file size of 10 MB and an upgrade path. A generous bandwidth label does not remove a per-file limit or establish how the service performs for a particular site. Confirm present-day terms before uploading files or choosing it.

How to choose a free host for your site
Start with what the site must run and what happens if it goes offline. A static page has different requirements from WordPress or another PHP application, while a business-critical site has less tolerance for weak support or uncertain reliability.
- Site technology: If the site needs PHP, MySQL or WordPress, verify that the current plan supports the required versions and setup. If it consists of static files, consider whether a static publishing service is a better match.
- Storage and traffic: Check the actual current storage, bandwidth, file-upload ceilings and any fair-use restrictions. Do not treat “unlimited” as evidence that there are no practical limits.
- Domain and ads: Confirm whether the plan includes a subdomain, accepts a domain you already own, and places advertising on the site.
- Setup and recovery: Check for application installers, SSL, backups and a workable recovery process. The existence of an installer is not a backup plan.
- Support and consequences of failure: Find out what help is available and whether a delay or outage would matter. A free plan may be unsuitable if the site needs dependable support.
For a PHP, database or WordPress experiment
A traditional free host may be useful for learning, a personal project or staging, provided its current PHP and database versions match the software you intend to run. InfinityFree currently advertises PHP/MySQL and WordPress support, but that feature list does not establish uptime, recovery quality or suitability for your particular site. Keep important content backed up somewhere you control.

For a static portfolio or project page
A repository-based service may suit a static site better than general-purpose shared hosting. GitHub Pages is a separate, current option—not one of the hosts in IT Pro’s 2022 comparison. GitHub documents it as available for public repositories on GitHub Free, with published sites limited to 1 GB, a soft bandwidth limit of 100 GB per month and a soft build limit of 10 per hour unless a custom GitHub Actions workflow is used. GitHub says Pages is not intended or permitted as free hosting for online businesses, e-commerce, sites primarily facilitating transactions or SaaS, and warns against using it for sensitive transactions. For a business-critical site
Free hosting’s possible limits on reliability, security and customer support may be unacceptable when the site supports essential operations. IT Pro advised considering paid providers for stronger security, reliability and expert support. That is its recommendation, not a guarantee that every paid plan provides those outcomes; compare service terms and support commitments before choosing.

Why the 2022 ranking is not a current guarantee
The IT Pro article is explicitly a 2022 comparison. Its figures and descriptions are useful for understanding what it recommended at the time, but provider plans, limits and availability can change.
