For a quick reputation check, use Google Safe Browsing’s Site Status tool. For assessments from multiple security providers, submit a URL to VirusTotal. To see what a page loads during an automated visit, use urlscan.io. These tools use different methods, and none can prove a link is safe: a result with no detections means only that the service did not report a known problem in the information it checked.
Privacy warning: A URL can contain a password-reset token, private invitation, session identifier, or other secret. Submitting it may disclose that address to a third party. Check a service’s submission and privacy terms before scanning sensitive links.

There is no evidence here for a defensible single “most accurate” ranking. Choose by the question you need answered: reputation, multiple-provider assessments, or observed page activity.
How to use each scanner
Google Safe Browsing Site Status
- Open Google’s Site Status tool.
- Enter the site or domain you want to check and view the reported status.
- Treat the result as Google’s current assessment, not an exhaustive inspection of every page, redirect, or future behavior on the site.
Google says it scans sections of its web index daily for potentially compromised sites and uses statistical models to identify phishing sites. It says unsafe sites are added to its list within minutes of detection and that, on average, detected unsafe sites take half an hour to appear externally. Those are descriptions of Google’s process and average timing, not a guarantee about an individual URL or submission. Google Safe Browsing FAQ

VirusTotal
- Before submitting, consider whether the address includes a secret or private token. VirusTotal says URL submissions are shared with the submitter and examining partners.
- Open VirusTotal and submit the URL you want assessed.
- Review the provider results and report context. If a report can be reanalysed, remember that a later assessment still reflects the service’s available checks at that time.
VirusTotal says it inspects items using more than 70 antivirus scanners and URL/domain blocklisting services. That is the service’s stated coverage, not a promise that every URL receives an identical set of checks. Results can vary by item and report. urlscan.io
- Check urlscan.io’s current submission visibility and privacy controls before sending a sensitive address.
- Submit the URL at urlscan.io.
- Use the resulting activity view to see what the automated page navigation loaded or did; do not treat it as a guarantee about another visit.
urlscan.io describes itself as a free service. Its automated process browses to the submitted address like a regular user and records activity generated by page navigation. That makes it useful when a reputation lookup alone does not answer what a page loads during a visit.

What a clean result does—and does not—mean
A scanner may find a URL already represented in its threat data or identify suspicious behavior observed during its analysis. Its result is limited by its data and method. Google says it scans sections of its index and does not see every host; VirusTotal reports partner assessments and recent activity; urlscan.io records activity from its automated navigation. These descriptions do not establish that any service catches every new, targeted, or conditional threat.
If a suspicious link gets no detections, do not click it on that basis alone. Check the registrable domain carefully, and do not enter credentials or payment details through a link in an unexpected message. Instead, go to the claimed organization using an address you already know or its official app. For a work login or payment request, confirm it through a separate trusted channel.

Protect sensitive information before scanning
The part after a domain can matter: query parameters and unique tokens may identify a person, grant access, or expose a private destination. Sending a full URL to a scanner can disclose those components under the service’s submission handling. VirusTotal explicitly says submissions are shared with the submitter and examining partners. Google’s Safe Browsing Lookup API documentation says its Lookup method sends actual URLs to Google and identifies URL privacy as a drawback. VirusTotal documentation; Google Safe Browsing Lookup API
- Do not paste a sensitive full URL into a public or multi-party scanner unless you understand and accept its disclosure implications.
- If you can safely inspect the domain without opening the link, checking only the domain may reduce disclosure. It may not assess the specific page path or tokenized destination.
- Do not remove URL components if doing so could change the destination or risk. Never open a suspicious link just to test it.
Why scanners can miss a problem
Reputation lists and automated page visits provide useful evidence, but neither covers every possible URL state. A site can change after a scan; a page may behave differently depending on redirects, device, location, login state, or timing. The reviewed service descriptions do not establish universal coverage of those cases.

Google says its scanners do not see all websites or hosts, and that the metrics it presents are based only on what they observe. Google Safe Browsing FAQ A result should therefore inform a decision, not replace checking whether the sender and destination make sense.
