For a free graphical batch workflow, start with HandBrake. Its Creator presets are designed for video-hosting platforms such as YouTube and offer several common resolutions in MP4. Shutter Encoder is another GUI option; FFmpeg is the better fit when you want scripting, explicit looping, or detailed control. None guarantees a particular file-size reduction or encoding speed: test representative clips on your own files and computer.

Compressing a video and delivering a YouTube live stream are separate jobs. An MP4 prepared for upload is not automatically a correctly configured live-ingestion stream. Choose the streaming workflow first, then check its requirements before applying export settings.

Which free tool should you use?

Tool Best fit What the documentation establishes What to check yourself
HandBrake Batch preparation with a graphical queue and reusable presets Its Web presets use MP4, and its Creator presets target video-hosting services including YouTube. Listed Creator presets use H.264 video and AAC stereo audio and include 720p60, 1080p60, 1440p60, and 2160p60. Choose a resolution and quality appropriate to the source and intended stream; inspect output size, appearance, and audio on sample clips.
Shutter Encoder A graphical workflow with configurable encoding and streaming controls Its documentation describes encoding options and an RTMP streaming function, including a YouTube RTMP address example. Run a short representative encode and verify that the output suits the selected YouTube live workflow.
FFmpeg Scripts, repeatable command-line jobs, and explicit looping or codec control Its documentation defines -stream_loop as an input option, with -1 for infinite looping. It also documents encoder selection and copy as an output codec value that avoids re-encoding when compatible. Confirm compatibility, output naming, overwrite behavior, logs, and error handling before automating a batch.

These are capability-based choices, not benchmark rankings. The available documentation does not establish which tool encodes faster or produces smaller files at equivalent visual quality on a given machine. Hardware-related encoder choices are available in HandBrake’s CLI reference, but that alone does not establish which encoder will be fastest on your computer.

How to batch compress safely

  1. Keep the originals. Work from copies or save compressed files to a separate output folder so you can recover the source if a setting is wrong.
  2. Pick a representative test set. Include a short high-motion clip and a low-motion clip. Different footage can reveal different compression artifacts; one clip is not enough to judge a whole batch.
  3. Choose the output for the actual source. HandBrake’s Creator presets are a sensible starting point for a GUI workflow, but do not upscale low-resolution footage merely because a higher preset exists. Match the intended resolution to the source and streaming plan.
  4. Encode a short sample before queuing everything. Compare visible detail, motion, audio, and file size. Adjust quality or resolution if needed, then repeat the sample rather than assuming a preset is optimal.
  5. Queue the remaining files only after validation. Set a distinct output location and predictable filenames. Before repeating a run, check whether the tool will overwrite existing files or generate collisions.
  6. Check failures and the finished batch. Review the queue or logs for failed files, and open several outputs—including the test clips—to confirm they play and retain the expected audio.

Batch compression trades encoding time and file size against visible quality. Because source footage, encoder settings, and computer hardware vary, there is no supported universal reduction percentage or processing-time estimate.

When FFmpeg stream copy is better than compression

If the file already uses codecs and a container compatible with the intended workflow, re-encoding solely to reduce size may be unnecessary. FFmpeg’s copy output codec avoids recompressing the streams, so it preserves the encoded video rather than making it smaller through another lossy encode. Stream copy is not a compression method; use it only when compatibility and the actual task allow it.

For a command-line input that should repeat indefinitely, FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as the infinite-loop option. It is an input option, so its placement relative to the input matters. The command to deliver a live stream still depends on the encoder, protocol, and ingestion requirements; do not treat a loop flag or a compressed MP4 by itself as a complete YouTube streaming setup.

Make sure the file matches the YouTube live workflow

YouTube ingestion requirements depend on the protocol. A file that plays locally or is suitable for an ordinary upload is not necessarily a ready-to-send live stream. Identify whether the workflow uses DASH, HLS, or another configured encoder path before turning ingestion rules into an export preset.

DASH

YouTube’s official DASH ingestion requirements specify supported containers and codecs and require closed GOPs. The GOP size should be about two seconds and must be under eight seconds. These are live-ingestion requirements, not a reason to apply the same setting indiscriminately to every compressed video file.
