Toggl Track and Clockify are the strongest free-first options for Mac users. Choose Toggl Track if you want a free plan with timers, calendar integrations, and personal insights; choose Clockify if you need project-based logging and want optional desktop activity capture. Check each app’s macOS requirement before downloading, and note that Clockify’s Mac App Store version lacks auto tracking and idle detection.

Which free Mac time tracker should you choose?

App Free access Mac requirement Best fit Important caveat
Toggl Track Free plan with manual and real-time timers, calendar integrations, simple planning, and personal-level insights, according to its pricing page. macOS 11 Big Sur or later. People who want timers plus calendar support, cross-device use, or optional background activity tracking. Requires an account. Reports are viewed in the web app; check current plan details on the pricing page.
Clockify Its Mac page describes a free account and desktop tracker. macOS 12.0 or higher. Project- and task-based hour logging, with optional activity capture. The Mac App Store build omits auto tracker and idle detection; the vendor directs users to its website download for those features.
Timing 30-day trial without a credit card; its editions are subscription-based. Minimum macOS version not stated on the reviewed pricing page. People seeking automatic tracking who are willing to consider a paid app. A trial is not a permanently free plan. Timing says it is not distributed through the Mac App Store because sandboxing would restrict tracking details.

These are candidates based on the vendors’ published descriptions, not hands-on test results or a universal ranking. Compare the free-plan limits and workflows against your own needs before choosing.

What does “time tracking” mean in each app?

Manual timers and entries

A manual timer records time when you start and stop it, usually against a project or task. Toggl Track offers one-click timers and manual entries; Clockify describes one-click and keyboard-started timers, as well as projects, tasks, tags, and billable entries. This approach gives you direct control over what gets recorded, but depends on remembering to start and stop the timer.

Automatic activity capture

Toggl documents background activity tracking alongside timers and calendar events. Its pricing page says desktop activity tracking covers apps and websites used for more than 10 seconds, and that users decide which activities become time entries. That is a documented feature description, not an independent assessment of capture accuracy or privacy.

The feature is absent from the Mac App Store build, along with idle detection; use Clockify’s website download if those capabilities matter.

Timing is the alternative in this comparison centered on automatic tracking, but it is paid after a 30-day trial. It also supports manual entries across its editions.

Check compatibility and installation before you commit

  • Toggl Track: Requires macOS 11 Big Sur or later and a Toggl account. The vendor offers separate Apple Silicon and Intel downloads.
  • Clockify: Requires macOS 12.0 or higher. Choose the website download, rather than the Mac App Store build, if you need auto tracking or idle detection.
  • Timing: Its reviewed pricing page does not state a minimum macOS version. The vendor says it does not offer a Mac App Store version because App Store sandboxing would limit the details it can track.

Operating-system requirements and download options can change. Confirm the current requirement on the vendor’s Mac page before installing, especially on an older Mac.

What do the free plans cover?

Toggl Track

Toggl’s pricing page lists a free plan with manual and real-time timers, focus mode, calendar integrations, simple planning, and personal-level insights. The same page lists paid features such as billable rates, team reports, capacity planning, and additional reporting. If you need billing workflows or deeper team reporting, check whether the current free tier covers your specific use before moving work into the app.

Clockify

Clockify’s Mac page describes a free account and desktop app, but the cited page does not establish a detailed list of free-plan limits. Check its current account terms and feature limits before relying on a particular reporting, project, or team capability. The Mac app handles timer entry; the web version is where Clockify says users manage projects, timesheets, reports, and exports.

Timing

Timing offers a 30-day trial without a credit card and describes Professional, Expert, and Connect editions. Those are paid editions rather than a permanently free tier, so Timing is relevant if automated tracking is more important than staying free.

How to decide based on your workflow

  • Pick Toggl Track if you want a free plan with manual timers, calendar integration, and personal insights, or if you value using the service across Mac, web, iPhone, and Android.
  • Pick Clockify if you organize time around projects and tasks and want the option of app and website activity capture. Download from its website rather than the Mac App Store for auto tracking and idle detection.
  • Consider Timing if automatic tracking is your priority and a paid subscription after a trial is acceptable.
  • Check integrations first if your records need to connect to tools you already use. Toggl lists calendar integrations and connections with services such as Asana, Jira, GitHub, and Todoist. Timing’s edition-dependent integrations include Calendar, Reminders, ClickUp, Linear, Clio, and an invoicing integration.

If you already use Toggl Track and prefer a dedicated Apple-device interface, Timery is a companion app for Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. It requires a free or paid Toggl Track account, so it is not a separate tracking service.

What to verify before relying on a tracker

  1. Confirm your macOS version. Compare it with the vendor’s current requirement before downloading.
  2. Decide what you want recorded. A manual timer records sessions you initiate; activity capture can surface apps or websites for you to turn into entries.
  3. Check the exact free-plan boundary. Look for the features your work depends on—such as billable rates, team reports, exports, or planning—rather than relying on a general “free” label.
  4. Check how entries are reviewed and corrected. Activity capture and timer logs are different workflows; make sure you can review what is saved and edit entries as needed.
  5. Match the download to the features. In Clockify, the App Store build does not include auto tracker or idle detection.

Vendor feature descriptions do not establish how accurately an app recognizes work, nor do they provide a complete independent privacy evaluation. Review each vendor’s current documentation and settings for your intended use.
