Which compressor should you choose?
Choose PDF24 for frequent free use without registration
PDF24’s product page uses the wording “Free Online No limits Secure” and states that registration is not required. It says its servers are in Germany and uploaded files are automatically deleted after one hour. The same page displays 4.92 out of 5 from 14,951 votes; that is the site’s own rating, not an independent compression benchmark.
Choose Sejda when you want explicit caps and image-quality settings
Sejda states that free documents can contain up to 200 pages or be up to 100 MB, with three tasks allowed per hour. Its Good and Best image-quality choices make it useful when you want to adjust the trade-off between file size and image appearance.

Choose Adobe Acrobat online if you already use Adobe
Adobe’s online compressor can fit an occasional job if you are comfortable with its free-use restriction: after use, the service allows one free compression transaction per current 30-day period. Adobe says that if you do not sign in, it deletes the file from its servers soon after you download it.

Choose Smallpdf if you may want stronger compression later
Smallpdf lists a Free plan, while its paid plans include Strong Compression. The cited pricing information does not establish a specific free usage cap or file-retention period, so check the current service terms if either affects your choice.
How to compress a PDF online and check the result
- Check the source file. Note its size and whether it contains scanned pages, photos, or mostly selectable text. PDFs with image-heavy pages can be affected more visibly by image compression than text-heavy files.
- Choose a service based on the document and its terms. Online compression requires uploading the PDF. For confidential material, use an offline or local workflow rather than uploading it. For other files, choose a service whose stated retention policy you accept.
- Use the least aggressive setting that meets your size target. Sejda offers Good and Best image-quality choices; iLovePDF offers a low-compression option. A smaller file is not automatically a better result.
- Download and inspect the compressed PDF. Check several pages at 100% to 150% zoom, paying attention to small text, diagrams, signatures, and photos.
- Verify document features. Confirm that hyperlinks, bookmarks, searchable text, and the page count still work as expected before sharing the file.
What to know about limits, quality, and privacy
“Free” does not always mean unlimited
Among these services, PDF24 makes the clearest no-limit claim on its compressor page. Sejda publishes page, file-size, and hourly task caps. iLovePDF describes limited processing on Basic, while Adobe sets a one-transaction-per-current-30-day-period free limit after use. Smallpdf lists a Free plan, but the cited information does not specify its free-use cap.

Compression quality depends on the contents of your PDF
Image handling is a key trade-off: stronger reduction can make photos or fine details less clear. The provider pages reviewed do not supply independent, comparable compression-ratio figures. If a particular target size matters, compress your own file and inspect the output rather than relying on a general percentage claim.
Check retention before uploading sensitive files
PDF24 states that files are automatically deleted after one hour. Adobe says unsigned users’ files are deleted soon after download. The cited information for Sejda, iLovePDF, and Smallpdf does not establish a specific deletion period, so do not infer one from the fact that a tool is free or online.
