FAST services stream ad-supported channels over the internet, often alongside on-demand shows and movies. They may not carry the local broadcast affiliate, premium network, or live event you want. Check the exact channel and its availability in your market before changing a paid TV plan.
What “free live TV” means
FAST stands for free ad-supported streaming television. A FAST service presents internet-delivered programming in scheduled channels, much like a traditional TV guide, and may also offer an on-demand library. “Free” means no subscription payment for the free tier; it does not mean ad-free. Pluto TV, for example, says commercial breaks fund its channels and titles, and describes its service as “a free, safe, and legal streaming service.” That is Pluto TV’s own description, not an independent legal assessment. Pluto TV
Cable and paid live-TV streaming packages are different: they bundle particular networks under plans whose lineups and terms can change. An antenna receives local over-the-air broadcasts where stations and reception are available. These options can appear in the same device interface, but their costs, channel rights, and coverage are not interchangeable.
How the main free services compare
| Service | What the provider says | What to know |
| The Roku Channel | Roku advertises 500+ free live channels on its current live-TV overview, accessed October 4, 2026. Roku | The count is Roku’s own advertised total, not an independent count or a measure of unique or relevant channels. The overview also presents paid live-TV services, which may require separate subscriptions. Compatible Roku TVs can use an HDTV antenna for local over-the-air stations; reception and station availability vary. |
| Pluto TV | Free live channels plus movies and shows, supported by commercial breaks. Pluto TV | Pluto describes support for browsers and compatible devices and says content availability may change. Its cited page does not establish a fixed current channel total or guarantee local stations. |
| Sling Freestream | Sling advertises 600+ free live channels and 40,000+ on-demand titles on its service page, accessed October 4, 2026. Sling says no account is needed to watch. Sling Freestream | Sling lists up to 10 hours of free DVR and personalization features for account holders. These free features are distinct from Sling’s separate paid plans. The advertised total is not directly comparable to a cable lineup. |
| Tubi | Tubi’s current live guide displays categories including national and local news, sports, weather, and entertainment. Tubi live TV | Tubi announced over 200 live channels and more than 100 local station feeds across nearly 60 designated market areas in 2022; those are historical figures, not a current lineup count. Tubi’s 2022 announcement |
| Xumo Play | Comcast describes Xumo Play as a FAST service with linear channels and on-demand content. Comcast’s Xumo venture announcement | No current Xumo Play lineup count is established here. A 2024 report offers an audience statistic, not a current channel total. |
| Plex | Plex distinguishes its free streaming channels from antenna-based DVR in its support information. Plex Support | Plex Support says its free channels generally do not include premium cable channels or local broadcast affiliates, and that licensed channels cannot be paused, rewound, or fast-forwarded. Check Plex’s current support guidance and channel availability before relying on those limits. |
Why channel totals do not tell you which service is best
Roku’s 500+ and Sling Freestream’s 600+ are provider-reported advertised totals, not verified counts of distinct channels that matter to a particular viewer. They do not show whether channels are duplicated across services, whether a desired local station is included, or whether a channel offers the programs you expect. A larger total is not evidence of a cable-equivalent lineup.

Instead, search each service’s guide for the specific news, sports, entertainment, or language channels you want. Check whether the listing is a scheduled channel or an on-demand title, and confirm the content works in your location and on your device. Channel rights, feeds, and schedules can change.
Can a free service replace cable?
It can be enough for viewers who mainly want ad-supported scheduled programming and can find suitable channels in the free guides. It is less likely to replace a paid package if you depend on a particular premium network, local broadcast affiliate, or live major-league event. Plex Support says its free channels generally do not include premium cable channels or local broadcast affiliates; that statement is specific to Plex, not a universal rule for every FAST service.

Do not assume that a local-news stream is the same as the local broadcast affiliate carrying network programming. Confirm the exact station and market. For over-the-air local broadcasts, an antenna may help where stations are available and reception permits; Roku says compatible Roku TVs can use an HDTV antenna. An antenna does not provide FAST channels or premium cable networks.
There is no sound universal cable-versus-streaming price comparison without naming a provider and package, market, equipment fees, introductory terms, taxes, and date. Those details were not established for a cable provider here. Compare the exact channels and total terms of a specific paid plan with the free services you can actually use before canceling.

What to check before choosing a service
- Cost and ads: Confirm that the tier you intend to use is free and understand that advertising supports it. Look for paid destinations mixed into the same app or device guide.
- Channel relevance: Search for named channels and programs rather than choosing by the advertised channel total.
- Local coverage: Check the service’s guide for your market, and distinguish local-news programming from a broadcast affiliate. Consider antenna reception separately.
- Live and on-demand: Decide whether scheduled channels, an on-demand library, or both fit your viewing habits. Pluto TV and Sling Freestream describe both types of programming.
- Accounts and controls: Check whether sign-in is required and which features require an account. Sling says Freestream can be watched without one and lists DVR up to 10 hours and personalization for account holders. Plex Support says its licensed free live channels cannot be paused, rewound, or fast-forwarded.
- Device and location: Confirm the app is available on your TV, streaming device, phone, or browser, and that the desired content is offered where you live. Pluto TV notes that content availability can change.
How much do viewers use FAST channels?
A 2024 report from Xumo and FASTMaster Consulting, based on a survey of 4,000 U.S. adults from Q3 2023 to Q1 2024, reported average evening FAST-channel viewing of 1 hour and 40 minutes among surveyed FAST viewers. It reported 1 hour and 58 minutes of evening cable-network viewing among cable customers. These are findings from company-commissioned research, not a measure of how much any individual viewer will watch. Xumo and FASTMaster Consulting report

FAST does not have to be an all-or-nothing replacement. Comcast has described integrating free FAST channels into Xfinity Stream for customers whether or not they subscribe to Xfinity Video. That historical announcement illustrates how free and paid TV can coexist, but it does not guarantee a current lineup or feature set. Comcast announcement
