Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe best free Gaussian Splatting tool depends on how you want to make a scene: Scaniverse is the easiest documented free option for phone capture, while Nerfstudio Splatfacto suits people who want local training and more control. Polycam offers a guided capture workflow but its free plan is limited and does not include Gaussian splat export. For editing a splat after creation, use SuperSplat—it is a cleanup tool, not a trainer.
There is no verified, controlled test comparing the visual quality of all these tools on identical input. The practical choice is therefore about workflow, free limits, hardware, export format, and setup—not a universal quality winner.
What Gaussian Splatting tools do
Gaussian Splatting represents a scene using 3D volumetric Gaussians that are projected into a view and rasterized. Nerfstudio notes that GPU rasterization can render faster than neural radiance-field representations. Its Splatfacto is Nerfstudio’s implementation of the approach and can evolve separately from the original method. Nerfstudio’s Splatfacto documentation explains the method and workflow.
A complete workflow can involve capturing images or video, preparing camera poses and scene geometry, training or processing the splat, exporting it, and then viewing or cleaning it up. Not every tool handles every stage: a browser editor may help after a scene exists, while a trainer needs suitable input data and computation.

Which tool should you choose?
Choose Scaniverse for a simple mobile starting point
If you want to capture a scene with a phone without setting up a desktop training environment, Scaniverse is the clearest documented free starting point in this group. Trimble lists iOS and Android support, on-device processing, and SPZ export. That makes it a different proposition from a local PC trainer: less emphasis on tuning a training pipeline, more on capturing and processing on the device.
Choose Nerfstudio when you want control and can handle setup
Splatfacto is a better fit if you are comfortable preparing image data and working with a local GPU-backed workflow. Nerfstudio says splatting works much better when initialized from existing geometry such as COLMAP points; its workflow can then be interactively viewed, rendered, and exported as PLY. This is a technical path rather than a one-tap mobile capture experience.

Choose Polycam if guided capture matters more than a free splat export
Polycam may appeal if you prefer a guided capture service, but its free tier is not a free Gaussian-splat export route according to Trimble’s overview. On the pricing page checked October 4, 2026, Polycam listed Free at $0, Basic at $150 per year or $30 per month, and Business at $400 per user per year. The same page says Free has limited space, object, and AI captures and includes GLTF exports; Basic lists unlimited Gaussian splats and additional export formats. These are listed terms on that date, not permanent guarantees. Check Polycam’s current pricing and plan details before committing.
Use SuperSplat when the scene already exists
SuperSplat belongs later in the workflow. It is for viewing and cleanup—such as cropping or removing floating artifacts—not for training a scene from images. Trimble’s SketchUp help page says its Gaussian Splats for SketchUp extension focuses on “visualizing and manipulating splat files,” a useful distinction when choosing between creation and editing tools. Hardware needs for local training
Nerfstudio gives approximate memory requirements of 6 GB for default Splatfacto and 12 GB for Splatfacto-big. It describes the larger variant as higher quality with more Gaussians and slower speed. These are estimates for those Nerfstudio workflows, not universal minimums for Gaussian Splatting software. Nerfstudio’s backend uses gsplat and involves CUDA setup. See the Splatfacto hardware and setup notes.
A separate gsplat paper reports a benchmark on an A100 using MipNeRF360, averaged over seven scenes: the gsplat authors reported 5.6 GB memory and 19.39 minutes at 30,000 iterations in 2025, compared with 9.0 GB and 26.19 minutes for the original 3DGS implementation in that setup. The paper reports similar quality metrics for that configuration. Those figures describe a specific research benchmark, not expected performance on a consumer PC or proof that every current app is faster. The paper states gsplat is available under Apache License 2.0. Read the gsplat paper.

Check export compatibility before you start
The output format can determine whether a tool fits the next step in your project. The cited sources document SPZ export for Scaniverse, PLY for Nerfstudio Splatfacto, and GLTF export on Polycam Free; Polycam’s paid plans list additional formats. Do not assume two tools’ outputs are interchangeable: confirm that the viewer, editor, or downstream application you plan to use accepts the format you can export.

- Want mobile capture and on-device processing? Start with Scaniverse and confirm that SPZ works for your destination.
- Want local training and a documented PLY output? Consider Nerfstudio Splatfacto, provided your system and setup are suitable.
- Want to edit rather than generate? Try SuperSplat after you have a splat file.
- Want a guided service? Review Polycam’s current free limits and export terms first.
How to make a practical choice
- Decide where processing should happen. Choose on-device capture, local desktop training, or cloud processing according to your hardware, privacy preferences, and tolerance for setup.
- Confirm the actual free path. Check whether the free tier creates a splat and lets you export it, rather than merely allowing capture or offering another export format.
- Match the export to your next application. Verify SPZ, PLY, GLTF, or another supported format against the viewer or editor you intend to use.
- Try one small scene. Use your own capture and intended destination to check workflow fit before investing time in a larger project. No cited source establishes a controlled, same-input quality ranking across these tools.
