What changed in Firefox 137?
Mozilla first offered Firefox 137.0 to Release-channel users on April 1, 2025. Its most visible addition was tab groups: users can group tabs, name and color groups, and close or reopen them. Availability was progressive, so the feature might not have appeared for every user on launch day. Mozilla’s Firefox 137.0 release notes describe the rollout.
Firefox 137.0.2 followed on April 15. Mozilla’s 137.0.2 notes list fixes including a macOS password-export file picker problem and accessibility issues with the new PDF signature feature. These are historical release details, not an indication that 137 is the current Firefox version.
Which LibreOffice version arrived in April 2025?
The Document Foundation announced LibreOffice 25.2.3 on April 30 for Windows (Intel, AMD, and ARM), macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel), and Linux. It is a maintenance release in the 25.2 feature series, focused on bug fixes and compatibility enhancements rather than a headline feature launch. The suite supports Open Document Format and Microsoft OOXML formats, including ODT, ODS, ODP, DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX.

For enterprise environments that prioritize a more thoroughly tested version, the Foundation recommended LibreOffice 24.8 in its 25.2.3 announcement. That distinction is more useful than treating the newest point release as the right choice for every deployment.
What was new in Ubuntu 25.04 and its flavors?

Ubuntu 25.04: a release-specific command issue
Canonical notes that systemd in Ubuntu 25.04 was built without utmp support, and records a known issue that prevented the who command from working pending a coreutils rebuild. This caveat applies to this Ubuntu release as documented; it should not be generalized to Linux distributions as a whole.
Xubuntu 25.04: Xfce desktop and packaged applications
Xubuntu 25.04 shipped Xfce 4.20, GIMP 3.0.2, and LibreOffice 25.2.2. Its release notes state that the release was supported for nine months, through January 2026. They also document a dual-boot GRUB-menu issue and performance or audio-stuttering problems in some virtual machines; the notes provide configuration changes or using PulseAudio as possible workarounds for affected VM scenarios.

Choose between Xubuntu and Kubuntu based on whether you prefer the Xfce or KDE Plasma desktop and their respective included applications, rather than assuming one flavor is universally better.
Canonical’s Intel Embree rendering claim
Canonical says improved GPU ray tracing in applications that support Intel Embree, such as Blender 4.2 or later, improves frame rendering by 20–30% because the ray-tracing component is 2–4 times faster. These are Canonical’s claims for the specified supported workloads and hardware, not independent, general-purpose Blender benchmark results.

Recent March releases with April relevance
OBS Studio 31.0
OBS Studio 31.0’s release notes are dated March 28, 2025, so it is a recent release to consider rather than an April launch. Additions included NVIDIA Blur Filter and Background Blur, Amazon IVS integration, and first-party YouTube Chat features. Check compatibility before upgrading: the OBS 31.0 notes say NVIDIA Kepler 600- and 700-series GPUs are no longer supported for NVENC, call out NVIDIA driver requirements, and list Ubuntu 22.04 support removal.
GIMP 3.0
GIMP announced version 3.0 on March 16, 2025, after seven years of development. Its notable additions include non-destructive editing for commonly used filters, on-canvas preview, and expanded format exchange. The GIMP announcement lists Windows, macOS, and Linux download options, including Linux AppImage and Flatpak. Xubuntu’s April release packaged GIMP 3.0.2.

How to choose among these updates
- For browsing: Firefox 137’s tab groups may help organize tabs, but the feature rolled out gradually.
- For office files: LibreOffice 25.2.3 provides a maintenance update across Windows, macOS, and Linux. In enterprise environments prioritizing a more thoroughly tested version, consider the Foundation’s 24.8 recommendation.
- For a Linux desktop: Compare Ubuntu’s base release with Xubuntu’s Xfce and Kubuntu’s KDE Plasma; check each flavor’s included applications, support information, and documented issues.
- For streaming or recording: OBS Studio 31.0 adds features for some workflows, but GPU encoder and operating-system support changes may affect an existing setup.
- For image editing: GIMP 3.0 is the relevant recent release; if using Xubuntu 25.04, the included package was 3.0.2.
