For reading and running apps side by side, choose a book-style foldable with a large inner screen. For a smaller phone to carry closed and quick cover-screen interactions, consider a flip-style foldable. No design guarantees comfortable one-handed use: check the folded size and weight, then try the phone in your hand if possible.
Choose a book-style or flip-style design first
The two foldable shapes solve different problems. Book-style models open like a small book, giving you a larger display for full-page reading and multitasking. Flip-style models fold into a more compact shape and emphasize interactions on the cover screen; for a larger reading area, you open the phone.
Samsung’s guide to choosing a foldable describes designs aimed at different preferences, while an independent 2026 roundup likewise characterizes notebook-style devices as stronger for productivity and flip phones as more portable. Neither shape is automatically better for every reader. Samsung Newsroom U.K. put it simply in its August 12, 2026 guide: “The best foldable isn’t the same for everyone.”
For reading and multitasking: start with a book-style foldable
A larger inner screen gives text and documents more room and makes side-by-side apps practical. Google lists the Pixel 10 Pro Fold with an 8-inch inner display and a 6.4-inch outer display. Its product announcement also describes adjustable two-app split screen and drag-and-drop between apps. These are manufacturer specifications and feature descriptions, not independent findings about comfort or performance. Google’s announcement and Google Store specifications provide the details.

Google lists Reading Mode among the phone’s accessibility features. Its folded dimensions are 6.1 × 3 × 0.4 inches and its listed weight is 9.1 ounces. Those figures help explain the trade-off: the broad reading surface is available when open, while the closed device still has to be carried and held. Dimensions and weight alone cannot establish whether it will feel comfortable in your grip.
Other manufacturers document their own multitasking approaches. Samsung describes Multi window split-screen and pop-up views, Multi view for Z Fold apps, Flex mode, and continuity between the cover and main displays. Motorola’s Razr Fold support material describes split-screen work, app switching, drag-and-drop, and saved app combinations. Features can vary by exact model, software version, and region; check the documentation for the specific device you are considering.
For compact carrying and cover-screen use: consider a flip-style foldable
A flip phone’s main advantage is its compact folded shape and the ability to handle some interactions from the cover screen. It is a reasonable fit if carrying a smaller closed phone matters more than having the largest possible workspace at all times. For sustained reading or two apps at once, you will generally use the opened screen.
Do not assume that a compact folded shape makes a phone easy to use one-handed. Comfort depends on hand size, grip, weight, and how you use the device. Compare the closed measurements and weight for the exact model, and try reaching across its cover screen before buying when you can.
Check how your apps behave across screens
Foldable hardware does not guarantee that every app will adapt smoothly. Samsung warns that some apps may not fully support continuity between the cover and main displays. If you rely on particular reading, messaging, work, or media apps, verify their behavior on the exact phone rather than assuming they will transfer seamlessly when you open or close it.
- Confirm that the apps you use most often support the screen transitions you expect.
- Check whether split screen or pop-up windows work with your preferred app pair.
- Look for saved app-pair features if you regularly open the same two apps together.
Use the hinge for hands-free viewing or controls
A foldable does not always have to be fully open or closed. Samsung documents Flex mode for supported uses with the phone partly folded. Motorola describes a laptop-like mode for the Razr Fold: one app appears on the upper screen while the lower half can provide controls, act as a split keyboard, or function as a touchpad. These are manufacturer-documented capabilities, not evidence that every app or task will work in that arrangement.

Google also describes an optional Pixelsnap Ring Stand for propping up a compatible phone for hands-free viewing. Check current compatibility and stock before relying on that accessory.

Battery results are also model- and test-dependent. In Tom’s Guide’s 2026 battery benchmark table, the Motorola Razr Fold recorded 14:44 and the Galaxy Z Fold 7 recorded 10:55.
