An external USB DVD drive is the practical choice for most PC games distributed on CD or DVD. Choose an external Blu-ray drive only if the specific game disc is Blu-ray. Before buying, check the drive model’s Windows support and the game’s own operating-system and copy-protection requirements: a drive can read a disc without making an older game install or run.
Which external disc drive do you need?
Match the drive to the format printed on the game disc. External optical drives differ by model: some read CDs and DVDs, while Blu-ray models support Blu-ray discs as well. Blu-ray capability is not necessary for a game distributed on DVD.
- CD or DVD game: Start with an external USB DVD drive that supports the disc format. DVD drives typically also support CDs, but confirm the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact model.
- Blu-ray game: Use an external Blu-ray drive whose specifications list the required format. Pioneer’s product documentation for the BDR-XD08EMBS and BDR-WX01DME illustrates model-specific format information: Pioneer BDR-XD08EMBS and Pioneer BDR-WX01DME.
Those models are examples of format-specific documentation, not a comparative recommendation. Check the drive maker’s current specifications and availability before selecting a particular model.
What to check before buying
- Windows support for the exact model: Compatibility varies by drive. ASUS lists specific external DVD and Blu-ray models it identifies as Windows 11-compatible. Its support page, last updated June 3, 2024, says relevant drives manufactured in or after 2020 and bundled software can support Windows 11: ASUS: Which ASUS optical drives support Windows 11? Check the manufacturer’s current support page rather than assuming every USB optical drive works with your Windows release.
- USB connection and power: Confirm that the drive’s connector works with your PC and whether its specifications require a particular USB port or external power. Do not assume every model has the same connection or power needs.
- Reading versus writing: If you only need to install or play a game, disc reading is the relevant function. Check that the model supports writing only if you also intend to burn discs.
- The game’s own requirements: Confirm the release or edition, supported Windows versions, and any publisher guidance or official patches. Drive compatibility and game compatibility are separate questions.
How to install a game from an external drive
Microsoft Support’s How to install programs from a disc explicitly covers an external CD-DVD drive and says: “Insert the disc into your PC or external CD-DVD drive, and then follow the instructions on your screen.” This is general installation guidance, not a promise that any particular game will work.

- Connect the external drive to the PC and insert the game disc.
- If the installer starts, follow its on-screen instructions.
- If nothing starts automatically, check Windows AutoPlay settings or open the disc in File Explorer and run its setup file, as Microsoft’s instructions recommend.
- After installation, follow the game publisher’s instructions for patches, activation, or launching the game.
Why a readable disc may still not work
Seeing the disc in File Explorer—or being able to open its files—only establishes that the PC can access the disc. It does not establish that the installer or game executable will work on the current Windows version. An older title may depend on copy protection, activation, or software compatibility that is separate from the drive. Microsoft Q&A discussions describe individual cases involving a readable game disc that would not install and an older game that stopped playing after updates; these support threads are examples, not a title-by-title compatibility list: Microsoft Q&A: external DVD game disc that could be read but would not install and Microsoft Q&A: older game disc that no longer played after updates.
If a game fails, check the exact release’s publisher guidance and official patches, and look for a legitimate current edition where available. Do not assume a different optical drive will resolve a DRM, activation, patch, or executable problem, and avoid unverified methods that bypass copy protection.

How to choose: a quick decision
- Read the format on the game disc or its packaging.
- For CD or DVD, look for an external USB DVD drive that lists support for that format. For Blu-ray, choose a Blu-ray-capable model.
- Verify the exact model’s Windows support, connector, and power requirements with its manufacturer.
- Check the game’s edition, operating-system requirements, and publisher guidance separately from the drive.
There is no established title-by-title compatibility catalog here, so a drive purchase cannot guarantee that every physical PC game will install or play on a current PC.
