There is no single best Apple Music equalizer setting for everyone. Start with a built-in preset that moves the sound toward what you want, then compare it with EQ off using familiar songs at a comfortable, consistent volume. Apple explains how to choose presets—and how to adjust frequency sliders on Mac—but does not name a universally best setting.

Choose an EQ setting based on what you want to hear

Think of EQ as a way to change tonal balance, not a quality score. A preset that makes one track more enjoyable may sound too bass-heavy or bright on another. Use these listening goals to choose a starting point:

  • More bass: Try a bass-oriented preset if you want stronger low frequencies. If kick drums or bass lines begin to overpower vocals, switch to a subtler setting or turn EQ off.
  • More vocal presence: Try a preset that emphasizes the middle of the sound spectrum. Compare speech and lead vocals on several familiar tracks; too much emphasis can make them sound harsh.
  • A less bright presentation: Try a preset that reduces emphasis on high frequencies if cymbals or sibilant vocals sound sharp to you.
  • A familiar, unaltered reference: Turn EQ off and compare. Your preferred setting may be no EQ at all.

These are listening suggestions, not Apple-published rankings or guaranteed descriptions of every preset. Preset names and available options can vary by platform; on Mac, Apple documents manual frequency sliders.

Where to find EQ on iPhone

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps, then Music.
  3. Tap EQ and choose a setting.

Apple’s current iPhone guide for iOS 26 documents choosing an EQ setting at Adjust the sound quality in Music on iPhone. It describes a preset choice, not the manual multi-band slider controls available in Apple’s Mac instructions.

How to adjust EQ on Mac

  1. In the Music app, choose Window > Equaliser.
  2. Select a preset, or move the frequency sliders to make a custom adjustment.
  3. Select On to enable the equalizer.

To save your slider settings, adjust them, choose Make Preset from the preset pop-up menu, and give the preset a name. For a setting that applies to one song, use Song > Get Info > Options to assign a song-specific equalizer preset. Apple says the equalizer settings otherwise apply to all songs until changed, except songs with their own assigned presets. See Adjust the sound quality in Music on Mac for the current macOS 26 instructions.

How to tell whether a setting works for you

  1. Pick a few songs you know well, ideally with different styles and vocal or instrumental arrangements.
  2. Listen at a comfortable volume and keep it consistent while comparing settings. A louder option can seem more impressive even when its tonal balance is not a better fit.
  3. Compare the preset with EQ off. Listen for the specific change you wanted—such as fuller bass or less sharp treble—and notice whether other elements become distracting.
  4. Keep the setting only if it remains pleasant across your test tracks. On Mac, save a custom slider setup as a preset if you want to return to it.

EQ, Sound Check, Sound Enhancer, and lossless audio are different

Sound Check changes relative loudness

Sound Check is not an equalizer: it adjusts loudness between songs so they play at a more consistent volume. If some tracks seem louder or quieter than others, Sound Check addresses that issue; EQ changes tonal balance. Apple notes that some stereo and Dolby Atmos tracks may still sound louder or quieter relative to one another. Read If music in Apple Music sounds quiet.

Sound Enhancer is a separate Mac control

Apple describes Sound Enhancer as changing perceived stereo wideness by modifying bass and treble response. It is separate from the equalizer, and Apple lists it separately from Sound Check in Mac Playback settings. See Change Playback settings in Music on Mac.

Lossless audio does not require a particular EQ setting

Apple’s lossless guidance covers compatible playback paths and optional equipment. An external DAC may be needed for sample rates above 48 kHz on certain devices, but that is a high-resolution playback consideration—not a prerequisite for changing Apple Music EQ. See About lossless audio in Apple Music.
