Oral-B iO and Philips Sonicare’s 9900 Prestige stand out for different reasons: iO has a specific American Dental Association acceptance record, while Philips’ newly announced Prestige emphasizes real-time brushing guidance and adaptive feedback. Choose by brushing feel, useful coaching, replacement-head compatibility, and the exact price and bundle available where you live.
What makes a good electric toothbrush for you?
The useful comparison is not a claim that one brand wins for every mouth. Consider the brushing motion and head shape, whether pressure feedback helps you, how much coverage coaching you want, and what compatible replacement heads and travel accessories cost. App connectivity and extra modes matter only if you expect to use them.
The available official material documents specific Oral-B and Philips features, but it does not establish an independent 2026 head-to-head ranking of the full market. Treat brand performance figures as claims against the comparator named by the manufacturer—not as proof that one brand beats the other.
Oral-B iO: a round head and an ADA acceptance record
Oral-B describes iO as combining a round oscillating-rotating brush head with microvibrations. Applicable models offer pressure and brushing-coverage feedback; check the exact model to see which features it includes. The round head and brushing sensation are design differences, not evidence that the experience will suit every user.

The ADA’s Council on Scientific Affairs accepted Oral-B iO Series based on its finding that the product is safe and has shown efficacy in removing plaque and helping prevent and reduce gingivitis when used as directed. That acceptance is specific to the iO Series; it is not an ADA finding that iO outperforms Philips Sonicare. See the ADA’s Oral-B iO Series record.
Check head compatibility before buying
Oral-B says iO handles require iO-exclusive brush heads; other Oral-B replacement heads do not fit iO handles. Confirm the handle and head model before ordering compatible Oral-B iO replacement heads.
Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige: adaptive feedback and visible coverage
In an announcement dated July 7, 2026, Philips described a new Sonicare Next-Generation DiamondClean 9900 Prestige with an on-device mouth map and a light ring for real-time brushing-coverage guidance, powered by its third-generation AI model. Philips also describes smart pressure sensing, SenseIQ, and eight modes. The product page lists a click-on brush head. These are manufacturer-described features; how useful the coaching is depends on whether you want guidance while brushing.

How to interpret Philips’ performance figures
Philips’ product page makes these comparisons against a manual toothbrush:
- “Up to 20x more plaque removal” versus a manual toothbrush.
- “Up to 15x healthier gums,” with Philips specifying a six-week comparison against a manual toothbrush.
- “Up to 100% more stains” in less than two days in a lab test versus a manual toothbrush.
These are Philips’ stated figures and qualifications, not independent comparisons against Oral-B. Philips also says that 37% of people are left guessing whether they brush well enough between dental visits; that figure is company-reported research, not an independent population estimate.

Which one should you choose?
- Choose Oral-B iO if you prefer its round oscillating-rotating design, want the specific ADA acceptance record, and are comfortable buying iO-exclusive replacement heads.
- Choose the Sonicare 9900 Prestige if you value the announced on-device coverage map, light-ring guidance, pressure sensing, and its click-on head design—and the exact regional model and bundle suit you.
- Compare other models too if the premium coaching or accessories are not important. The available evidence here does not comprehensively establish which other brands or models are best, nor does it provide a full-market independent ranking.
Neither the ADA’s acceptance of iO nor Philips’ product-page comparisons establishes that one is universally better. If you are unsure which brush or brushing approach is appropriate for you, ask your dental professional for advice tailored to your needs.
