A dedicated e-reader can move book reading off your phone and into a simpler, reading-focused device. For novels and other text-first reading, start with a compact monochrome E Ink model; choose color for comics and illustrated books, a larger screen or page-turn buttons for a different reading feel, and Android e-paper only if app flexibility matters more to you than a limited interface. No device can guarantee fewer distractions or less eye strain.
What makes an e-reader different from a phone?
An e-reader is built primarily for reading, rather than combining books with messaging, social feeds, and general-purpose apps. Many use E Ink displays. Kobo describes its E Ink screen as non-emissive and visible using ambient light; an integrated front light illuminates the screen from the front. That is a technical difference from typical phone and tablet displays, not proof of a medical benefit or a guarantee of better focus. Kobo explains how its screen and front lighting work.
A device with a tightly focused interface may make it easier to leave phone notifications behind while reading, but habits still matter. An e-reader does not automatically stop interruptions from another device nearby, and an Android e-reader can install apps that bring some of the same distractions back.
Which type of e-reader fits your reading?
Choose monochrome for novels and text-first reading
For novels, essays, and most books made chiefly of text, a monochrome reader is the straightforward starting point. The Kobo Clara BW, for example, has a 6-inch monochrome E Ink Carta 1300 HD display. It includes dark mode, adjustable ComfortLight PRO, waterproofing, and 16 GB of storage. The US catalog displayed it at $159.99 when checked October 4, 2026. Kobo’s US catalog lists the Clara BW specifications; Kobo’s price listing is a dated snapshot, not a promise of today’s price.

Choose color for comics and illustrated books
Color E Ink can show colored covers, illustrations, and comics, though the appearance and resolution differ by model. Kobo’s 6-inch Clara Colour uses a Kaleido 3 color display and has dark mode, ComfortLight PRO, waterproofing, and 16 GB storage. Its US catalog price was $179.99 on October 4, 2026. The 7-inch Kobo Libra Colour adds physical page-turn buttons, adjustable ComfortLight PRO, stylus compatibility, and 32 GB storage; its displayed US price was $259.99 on the same date. Consider Android e-paper only if you want app choice
The BOOX Go 7 series pairs a 7-inch screen with physical page-turn buttons and adjustable front lighting. The monochrome Go 7 uses a Carta 1300 display; the Go Color 7 (Gen II) uses Kaleido 3. BOOX lists 64 GB storage, microSD expansion, Android app access, and support for 26 digital formats. Its specifications give the monochrome display as 300 ppi and the color model as 300 ppi in black and white and 150 ppi in color. Check the exact variant because features can differ. BOOX’s official Go 7 page has the model details.

Android and Google Play access can make it possible to use multiple reading apps on one device. The trade-off is that news and other apps can also make the reader less focused than a more limited e-reader. Choose this route when app flexibility is a deliberate priority, not just because more apps sound useful.

Check book access before choosing a brand
Screen and controls are only part of the decision: consider where you get books. Kobo says readers can sync books borrowed through Libby where the library uses OverDrive. Library services and device support depend on location and setup, so verify that your own library and the exact reader are compatible before purchasing. Kobo’s guide to library books on Kobo readers.
For books you already own, check supported file formats and the steps required to transfer them. BOOX states that the Go 7 series supports 26 digital formats, but that manufacturer specification does not establish that every format or source will work identically across apps and variants. On any model, confirm that the device can handle the files and services you actually use.

Use your reading habits to make the decision
- Mostly novels or other text: favor a monochrome screen and a compact size; color may add little for your usual books.
- Comics or illustrated reading: consider a color model and compare the display size and stated color resolution.
- Want easier page navigation: look for physical page-turn buttons, available on the Libra Colour and BOOX Go 7 options described here.
- Want a simpler alternative to phone reading: favor a focused reading interface over broad app access.
- Need several reading apps: Android e-paper may suit you, provided you are comfortable managing the apps and notifications you add.
- Read in varied lighting or near water: check the precise lighting adjustments and waterproofing claims for the model; those features are not universal.
- Borrow library books or read personal files: verify local library compatibility, supported formats, and transfer methods before buying.
There is no universal winner: screen size, monochrome versus color, physical controls, lighting, store and library access, file support, waterproofing, and app flexibility matter in different ways to different readers. Compare current local prices and specifications rather than relying on a dated catalog listing.
