For a practical FPS starting point, use a DPI you can control consistently—400 or 800 are reasonable options—set your in-game sensitivity to preserve a comfortable, repeatable turning distance, and begin at a 1,000 Hz polling rate. There is no universally best combination: the right settings depend on your game, playstyle, mouse, and system. Treat higher polling rates as optional experiments, not guaranteed improvements.

What DPI, in-game sensitivity, and polling rate change

DPI controls sensor sensitivity

DPI describes how far the pointer moves in response to physical mouse movement: at a higher DPI, the pointer travels farther for the same movement. It is separate from a game’s sensitivity multiplier, which scales the game’s response to mouse input. For a complete setup, consider both rather than treating either number as the whole sensitivity setting. Logitech explains DPI and mouse sensitivity in its gaming mouse guide.

In-game sensitivity determines your turning and aiming feel

There is no single in-game sensitivity number that applies across games. Aim for a setting that lets you turn a comfortable, repeatable distance while maintaining control. If your current DPI and sensitivity feel reliable, keep them as your baseline instead of changing both at once.

Polling rate is how often the mouse reports to the computer

A 1,000 Hz polling rate means the mouse can report its state 1,000 times per second. In nominal terms, that corresponds to a 1 ms interval between reports; 8,000 Hz corresponds to 0.125 ms. These are report intervals, not total input-to-screen latency or a promise that you will perceive an improvement. Razer says its 8,000 Hz mode reports up to eight times more data per second than 1,000 Hz; that is a manufacturer claim about reporting frequency, not a guarantee of better gameplay.

Recommended starting settings

Setting Starting point How to use it
DPI Your familiar, controllable value; try 400 or 800 if starting fresh for FPS Keep it steady while tuning in-game sensitivity.
In-game sensitivity No universal numeric value Adjust gradually until turning distance and aim control feel comfortable and repeatable.
X/Y sensitivity Matched Separate the axes only for a deliberate reason.
Polling rate 1,000 Hz Try a higher supported rate in your actual game only if your setup remains smooth.

Logitech’s consulted-player settings page lists 800 DPI for CS2 players INS and KSCERATO and for Valorant coach Joe. It lists 400 DPI for R6 players Blaz and Doki, not as a universal FPS recommendation. Logitech also notes that there is no single best setting and that ideal configurations depend on the game, playstyle, and player. Its summary that consulted FPS players typically paired low sensitivity with a high wireless report rate describes those players; it is not an independent finding that every player should do the same.

How to tune the settings without losing a reliable baseline

  1. Keep your familiar DPI. If you are starting from scratch, try 400 or 800 DPI. Choose the one that feels controllable rather than assuming a higher number is more accurate.
  2. Set in-game sensitivity for repeatable movement. Change it in small steps and use a comfortable, repeatable turning distance as your guide. The sources do not establish a universal multiplier.
  3. Leave X and Y matched by default. Razer’s Viper V3 Pro manual documents an X-Y option to separate the axes and says they are matched by default. It documents how to change them, not a general advantage to doing so.
  4. Begin at 1,000 Hz. Test a higher rate only if your mouse, its software, operating system, and game support it. Use the game you actually play, and keep the higher setting only if it remains smooth and useful.
  5. Change one setting at a time. Keep notes or retain your previous values so you can return to a familiar configuration if the new one feels inconsistent.

When a higher polling rate makes sense—and when to lower it

Higher polling rates increase how often the mouse reports its state, but the available choices and requirements vary by model. Razer’s Viper V3 Pro master guide lists 125, 500, 1,000, 2,000, 4,000, and 8,000 Hz. Razer says the Viper V3 Pro requires the HyperPolling Wireless Dongle for its 8,000 Hz HyperPolling capability. Glorious says its 4K/8K edition requires CORE software to exceed 1,000 Hz, must be wired for 8,000 Hz, and advises checking the game’s maximum supported rate. Check the exact mouse, accessory, software, and game requirements before selecting a rate.

High polling can also be demanding on a particular setup. In its review of the SteelSeries Rival Pro, Tom’s Guide reported frame-rate drops at 8,000 Hz in Valorant, Apex Legends, Fortnite, and Rust on the reviewed setup. That observation applies to its tested mouse and setup; it does not establish that all 8,000 Hz mice or all systems will have the same issue. If you notice stutter or frame-rate problems, lower the polling rate and compare performance again.

Lightweight mouse examples are not prerequisites

Settings advice applies to configurable mice generally; a particular lightweight model is not required. Logitech names the PRO X Superlight as a lightweight recommendation. Razer’s Viper V3 Pro and Sony INZONE Mouse-A are other manufacturer examples with configurable sensitivity or high-polling features. Fnatic’s product page states that the INZONE Mouse-A weighs approximately 48.4 g and can reach up to 8,000 Hz when paired with its dongle. These are manufacturer specifications, not evidence that one model or weight produces the best settings for every player.
