The best disk cloning software depends on what you are cloning, how much control you need, and whether the destination disk must boot immediately. For a straightforward Windows SSD upgrade, Macrium Reflect X Home is the most dependable choice. Clonezilla Live is the strongest free option for exact disk-to-disk work, while Acronis True Image is the easiest all-in-one package for users who also want image backups, cloud storage, and ransomware protection.

This ranking focuses on practical cloning reliability rather than simply counting features. It also separates genuine free products from software that can be downloaded free but requires payment for full cloning or Windows migration.

NTI Cloning Kit | NEW Version 7 Software | The Easiest, Safest Way to Upgrade Your Computer's Drive | Software via Download | SATA-to-USB Adapter Included for 2.5" SSD and HDD
  • NEW NTI ECHO 7 WITH 4K-SECTOR SUPPORT: Clone between legacy 512-byte-sector drives and newer 4K-sector drives in either direction. NEW: Improved File/Folder Exclusion helps you migrate to a smaller drive when the selected data will fit and makes efficient use of the target drive’s available capacity. NOTE: Most issues reported in user reviews, while definitely solvable had these users contacted our Tech Support, are related to old versions, *not* the new V7.
  • AUTOMATIC DYNAMIC RESIZE: NTI’s proprietary Dynamic Resize technology automatically adjusts partitions when cloning to a smaller, equal-size, or larger drive. It simplifies SSD and hard-drive upgrades while reducing the need for complicated manual partition changes.
  • COMPLETE 2.5-INCH SATA UPGRADE KIT: Includes NTI Echo 7 cloning software and a USB-to-SATA adapter cable for connecting a 2.5-inch SATA SSD or HDD to your computer. The adapter supports USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 and uses a SATA III 6Gbps-capable chipset. Actual transfer speed depends on the drive, USB port, and computer.
  • UPGRADE, MIGRATE, OR CREATE A STANDBY DRIVE: Ideal for replacing a laptop HDD with an SSD, upgrading drive capacity, migrating an entire system, creating a full-drive backup, or making a duplicate standby drive. NTI Echo also supports NVMe, SATA SSD, and HDD cloning when used with the appropriate compatible adapter or enclosure.
  • POWERFUL CLONING SOFTWARE WITH A LIFETIME LICENSE: Install NTI Echo 7 on a Windows PC, connect the source and target drives, and turn your computer into a convenient cloning station. Clone drives containing Windows, Linux, macOS, or multi-OS partitions.* One-time purchase includes a lifetime software license with no annual subscription. NOTE: *NTI Echo 7 must be installed, activated, and run from Windows. Compatible with Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8, and 7. It can clone drives containing Windows, Linux, macOS, or multi-OS partitions.

The current consumer product is Reflect X. Do not confuse it with Macrium Reflect Free: the Free v8 edition is end-of-life, is no longer downloadable, and did not receive security changes after January 1, 2024. It should not be treated as a current free cloning solution.

How to clone a disk with Macrium

  1. Open Reflect.
  2. Open the Create Backups tab.
  3. Choose Local Disks.
  4. Select the source disk and click Clone this disk….
  5. Select the destination disk.
  6. Drag partitions to the destination, or choose Copy Partitions.
  7. Resize the partitions if required.
  8. Check the source and destination carefully, then start the clone.

Macrium warns that cloning can delete partitions on the destination disk. Disconnecting other external drives before beginning is a sensible way to reduce the risk of selecting the wrong disk.

Its ReDeploy feature can help prepare a cloned Windows installation for different hardware, but it is not a guarantee. OEM activation, storage-controller settings, drivers, and firmware configuration may still prevent a clean boot.

Important limitation: a clone is not a versioned backup. It is an immediately usable copy that can be overwritten during the next cloning operation. Keep a separate image backup if you need historical recovery points.

2. Clonezilla Live

Best for: free, exact disk-to-disk cloning and deployment.

Clonezilla Live is free, GPL-licensed, and extremely capable. It runs from bootable USB media rather than as a normal Windows application, making it useful when Windows will not boot, when a disk is being copied offline, or when identical systems must be deployed repeatedly.

The 2026 changelog lists Clonezilla Live 3.3.3-3. Its main disadvantage is not capability but usability: the text-based menus make source and destination identification less forgiving than in a graphical application.

How to perform a local disk clone

  1. Boot the computer from the Clonezilla USB drive.
  2. Choose Start Clonezilla.
  3. Select device-device.
  4. Choose Beginner.
  5. Select disk_to_local_disk.
  6. Choose the source disk.
  7. Choose the target disk.
  8. Confirm the destructive operation.

Clonezilla uses Linux device names such as /dev/sda, /dev/sdb, and /dev/sda1. Selecting the wrong target irreversibly overwrites it. Check disk sizes and identifiers before confirming.

EZITSOL SATA HDD SSD Cloning Kit with Bootable USB Key and Cable
  • All-in-One Disk Cloning Kit - Includes printed user guide, EZITSOL bootable USB key with built-in disk cloning software, and USB3.0-to-SATA cable for 2.5" SATA HDDs/SSDs (powered by USB). 3.5" drives need a 12V/2A 5.5×2.1mm adapter (not included). This kit is ideal for users who are a moderately tech-savvy.
  • Easy Disk Cloning - Easily clone your PC's internal drive to a larger SSD/HDD without reinstalling Windows or Linux. Perfect for drive upgrades and system migrations. Cloning between two external drives is also supported, but requires an additional drive adapter (not included).
  • USB Boot Required - This is an offline cloning tool. You must boot your PC from the included USB key, then connect the target drive using the SATA cable, and launch the clone program to start the cloning process. Two USB ports needed: one for USB key and one for SATA Cable.
  • Compatible with Most Home PCs - Supports 64-bit Intel/AMD PCs or Servers running Windows or Linux. Not compatible with ARM-based PCs, RAID, LVM, dynamic disks, or Mac file systems.
  • Important Notes - Legacy IDE hard disks and M.2 (SATA NGFF/NVME) SSDs are not supported. Cloning to a smaller disk is only possible if the used space is less than the target disk's capacity.

When cloning to a larger disk, Clonezilla does not automatically distribute the unused capacity in every workflow. Use the -k1 option when the remaining space should be allocated proportionally across the target partition table.

For a local command-line clone from /dev/sda to /dev/sdb, the documented command is:

ocs-onthefly -f sda -d sdb

Clonezilla normally uses filesystem-aware tools such as Partclone. Sector-by-sector copying is available for unsupported or damaged filesystems, but it is slower and copies unused sectors as well.

3. Acronis True Image

Best for: an easy cloning wizard combined with backup and security features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Acronis True Image is the current consumer name for the product formerly called Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office. The name changed in July 2024. It combines disk cloning with full-image backup, recovery media, cloud features, and ransomware protection, which explains why it remains popular despite requiring a subscription or paid license.

Acronis advertises plans from $49.99 per year, but prices are promotional and region-dependent rather than permanent list prices.

How to clone a disk in Acronis

  1. Open Acronis True Image.
  2. Click Tools in the sidebar.
  3. Choose Clone disk.
  4. Select Automatic or Manual clone mode.
  5. Choose the source disk and destination disk.
  6. In Manual mode, select As is, Proportional, or Manual for partition movement.
  7. Use What to exclude if appropriate.
  8. Review the Finish screen and click Proceed.

The automatic mode is convenient for a normal upgrade. Manual mode is better when the destination is a different size or when partitions need a specific layout.

There are several technical caveats. Bootable-media cloning on UEFI systems must use a boot mode matching the source installation: BIOS with BIOS or UEFI with UEFI. The 2025 user guide also states that dynamic disks are not supported for cloning. On Apple Silicon Macs, Acronis release notes document a failure that may end with “Operation has completed with errors.” The application also shuts down the computer by default when cloning finishes, so save work before starting.

4. Rescuezilla

Best for: Clonezilla-compatible cloning with a graphical interface.

Rescuezilla is a bootable Linux environment built around Clonezilla compatibility, but it replaces Clonezilla’s intimidating text menus with a graphical interface. The current stable download is Rescuezilla 2.6.2 64-bit.

It can clone disks, create images, restore backups, and access files on a damaged or unbootable system. It is a particularly good compromise for users who want free software but do not want to navigate Clonezilla’s device names and nested menus.

Rescuezilla still has the same operational requirements as other live-media tools: download the ISO, write it to a USB drive, boot from that drive, and identify the source and destination correctly. Writing the live image erases the USB stick used to create it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. EaseUS Todo Backup and Disk Copy

Best for: beginners who prioritize a simple Windows interface.

EaseUS provides a polished cloning workflow and is often a comfortable choice for users moving from a hard drive to an SSD. Its tools distinguish among Disk Mode, Partition Mode, System Mode, and sector-by-sector cloning.

How to clone with EaseUS Disk Copy

  1. Open EaseUS Disk Copy.
  2. Click Disk Mode.
  3. Select the source disk.
  4. Select the destination disk.
  5. Adjust the disk layout.
  6. Click Proceed.

The important licensing detail is easy to miss: the software may be downloadable for free, but EaseUS says a paid licensed version is required for full disk cloning, Windows migration, and advanced cloning features. Calling the current Disk Copy product completely free is therefore misleading.

Sector by sector copy copies every sector, including unused and blank areas. It requires a destination at least as large as the source and is slower than an intelligent filesystem-aware clone. Use it mainly for unsupported filesystems or disks with damaged sectors, not as the default option.

6. Carbon Copy Cloner 7

Best for: Mac file migration and backup workflows.

Carbon Copy Cloner 7 supports Macs compatible with macOS Ventura 13.1 or later, including Sonoma, Sequoia, and macOS 26 Tahoe. It is a Universal application for Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, and an APFS-formatted volume is required for a startup-disk backup.

Modern macOS changes what “cloning” means. Apple’s signed system volume cannot generally be copied as a simple bootable byte-for-byte duplicate. CCC therefore recommends a Standard Backup, followed by reinstalling macOS and using Migration Assistant when a full recovery is needed.

CCC can still create a legacy bootable copy through Apple Software Restore:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Select the startup disk as the source.
  2. Select a destination volume.
  3. In Backup Volume Setup Assistant, choose Legacy bootable clone using Apple Software Restore.
  4. Click Allow CCC to erase ‘(destination)’.
  5. Start the task.
  6. After completion, use System Settings > General > Startup Disk to authorize the destination.

The destination is erased. Apple Silicon Macs may also refuse to boot from some USB devices; CCC reports more consistent results with Thunderbolt storage.

7. O&O DiskImage 20

Best for: Windows users who need file-based or forensic cloning modes.

O&O DiskImage 20 supports two useful approaches. File-based cloning copies recognized data and is the normal choice. Forensic cloning copies every sector and is intended for unsupported filesystems, damaged media, or recovery work.

How to clone with O&O DiskImage

  1. Click Clone drive in the Quickaccess bar.
  2. Select the source drive or disk.
  3. Configure Cloning options if necessary.
  4. Select the target drive.
  5. Configure any completion action under Advanced.
  6. Click Start cloning.

The target is overwritten and all data on it is deleted. Direct clones are uncompressed and unencrypted, and they cannot be followed by incremental or differential clone updates. If you need compressed, encrypted, historical recovery points, use an image-based backup instead.

8. Hasleo Backup Suite 5.8

Best for: free Windows disk, partition, and operating-system cloning.

Hasleo Backup Suite V5.8 is a strong no-cost Windows alternative. It supports Windows OS cloning, disk cloning, partition cloning, and file backup. Its listed filesystem support includes FAT, NTFS, exFAT, and ReFS, and it supports Windows Vista/Server 2008 or later on x86, x64, and ARM64 processors.

Hasleo is Windows-focused. Its feature claims should not be generalized to macOS or Linux, and it is less suitable than Clonezilla for cross-platform recovery or large-scale deployment workflows.

Which cloning software should you choose?

Your situation Recommended tool Reason
Replacing a Windows system SSD Macrium Reflect X Home Strong live cloning, partition controls, and mature recovery features
Need a genuinely free disk-to-disk clone Clonezilla Live Free, open source, and capable of exact offline cloning
Want a graphical free tool Rescuezilla Clonezilla-compatible workflow without the text interface
Want cloning, cloud backup, and ransomware protection Acronis True Image Broadest all-in-one feature set
Prefer the simplest Windows wizard EaseUS Accessible interface, but full cloning requires a license
Moving files between modern Macs Carbon Copy Cloner 7 Strong backup and migration workflow; do not assume a universal bootable clone
Forensic or damaged-disk work Clonezilla or O&O DiskImage 20 Both offer sector-level approaches when filesystem-aware copying is unsuitable
Free Windows cloning with broad filesystem support Hasleo Backup Suite Supports Windows OS, disk, partition, and several common filesystems

How to clone a drive without losing data

  1. Back up important files first. A clone operation is destructive to the destination and is not a substitute for an independent backup.
  2. Confirm the destination capacity. Intelligent cloning can often move a smaller amount of used data to a smaller disk, but sector-by-sector cloning generally requires a destination at least as large as the source.
  3. Identify both disks by model and capacity. Do not rely solely on labels such as “Disk 0” or /dev/sda.
  4. Check the partition scheme. Modern Windows systems commonly use UEFI and GPT. A BIOS/UEFI mismatch can leave a cloned installation unbootable.
  5. Use the normal intelligent mode first. Sector-by-sector mode is slower and should be reserved for unsupported filesystems or damaged media.
  6. Shut down and test the new disk. Where possible, disconnect the old disk temporarily and boot from the clone. This confirms that the firmware is actually using the new drive.
  7. Keep the old disk untouched until testing is complete. It is the quickest fallback if the clone needs repair.

Clone versus image backup

A clone creates a directly usable copy of a disk. It is ideal for replacing a failing drive or upgrading storage with minimal reinstalling. An image backup is a stored recovery file that can usually be compressed, encrypted, scheduled, and retained in multiple historical versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a clone for migration and rapid replacement. Use an image backup for ransomware recovery, accidental deletion, and returning to an earlier system state. In a sensible backup plan, they serve different purposes rather than replacing one another.

FAQ

What is the best disk cloning software in 2026?

Macrium Reflect X Home is the best overall choice for dependable Windows system cloning. Clonezilla Live is the best genuinely free option, while Acronis True Image is better if you want cloning combined with cloud backup and ransomware protection.

Is Macrium Reflect Free still available?

No. Macrium Reflect Free v8 is end-of-life, no longer downloadable, and is not maintained for current Windows releases. The current consumer product is Macrium Reflect X Home.

Is Clonezilla difficult to use?

Clonezilla is more technical than graphical Windows tools because it boots from USB and uses text-based menus. It is reliable when you correctly identify the source and target disks, but selecting the wrong disk can destroy its data.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does cloning a disk count as a backup?

Not by itself. A clone is a directly usable replacement disk and is normally overwritten during the next clone. It does not usually provide the historical, compressed, encrypted recovery points supplied by an image-based backup.

The Bottom Line

Choose Macrium Reflect X Home for the most dependable Windows migration. Choose Clonezilla Live when cost and exact offline cloning matter more than convenience, or Rescuezilla when you want a graphical interface. Acronis True Image is the most convenient all-in-one package, while Mac users should treat Carbon Copy Cloner 7 primarily as a backup and migration tool rather than assuming every modern macOS clone will boot.
