The best debt reduction software is a planner that fits the way you want to repay debt and gives you a schedule you can actually follow. A dedicated payoff planner can compare snowball and avalanche strategies, project payoff dates from the figures you enter, and help you track progress. It does not erase debt or make payments for you. Because the available product information here does not support a broad, independently tested ranking, treat Undebt.it as a documented example—not a proven winner—and compare tools against the checklist below.
What debt reduction software can—and cannot—do
A debt payoff planner helps organize balances, interest rates, minimum payments, and any extra amount you can afford to pay. Depending on the tool, it may calculate a payoff schedule, show estimated dates, and record payments. Those are planning and tracking functions: you remain responsible for entering accurate information, making payments to creditors, and adjusting the plan when your circumstances change.
That distinction matters when comparing a dedicated planner with general budgeting software. A budgeting app may help you see where money goes and estimate an affordable extra payment. A debt planner focuses on how to direct that extra amount across debts. Some tools may combine functions, but check the current product documentation rather than assuming a feature is included.
Compare payoff methods before choosing an app
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s debt reduction worksheet lays out two common approaches. With either method, keep required minimum payments current on all debts and direct the additional payoff amount according to your chosen order.

| Method | How it orders debts | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Snowball | Pay the smallest balance first. | Clearing a smaller balance sooner may make progress easier to see. Compare the resulting schedule and interest estimates rather than assuming it is the cheapest option. |
| Avalanche (highest-rate method) | Pay the debt with the highest interest rate first. | This prioritizes the costliest rate, but the first balance may take longer to clear. Use the actual account rates and payment amounts to compare the projected plan. |
Neither order is universally best. Your account terms, available extra payment, and preference for visible milestones versus prioritizing interest all matter. A planner is useful when it lets you compare the schedules using your actual numbers; it cannot make an uncertain income or payment amount certain.
Features that make a planner useful
- Repayment order: Check whether it supports snowball, avalanche, and custom ordering, and whether it explains how the choices differ.
- Projection detail: Look for payoff dates and a payment schedule. If interest estimates are provided, confirm what assumptions they use.
- Tracking: Determine whether you can log payments, record due dates, and see progress over time.
- Data entry and connections: Find out whether balances are entered manually or imported through a bank or budgeting connection. Before linking accounts, review the tool’s current privacy and data-handling policies.
- Budget help: Some planners expect you to supply an extra monthly payment. If you do not know what is affordable, you may also need a budgeting tool or a separate budget review.
- Access and sharing: Check whether the service works in a web browser or offers a native mobile app, and verify any accessibility or household-sharing features you need.
- Cost and limits: Verify current free-plan limits, paid features, renewal terms, and prices directly with the provider. These details can change.

Before relying on any projection, check that your entries reflect current account terms and that the extra payment is realistic. The projected date is conditional on the inputs and on following the assumed payment plan; it is not a guarantee. Review Undebt.it’s current feature limits, pricing, access options, and privacy details on its official site before deciding whether it fits.
When a worksheet or budget review may be enough
You do not necessarily need software to choose a repayment order. The CFPB’s worksheet can help organize debts and compare a reduction plan on paper. Undebt.it also describes printable payoff materials on its official site. A worksheet can be a practical starting point if you only need to list balances, choose an order, and check progress periodically.

If the harder question is how much extra you can afford, start with a household budget rather than entering an arbitrary amount into a payoff calculator. A general budgeting tool can help with that task; a debt planner can then help allocate the amount you decide is sustainable.

Software organizes information, but it does not negotiate with creditors or provide counseling. The CFPB explains that credit counseling organizations can help with budgets, debts, and debt management plans. It says: “Credit counseling organizations are usually non-profit organizations, and their counselors are certified and trained in the areas of consumer credit, money and debt management, and budgeting.” Read the CFPB’s What is credit counseling? page and ask any organization about its services, fees, qualifications, and written terms.

A counselor may propose a debt management plan in which you make one monthly payment for distribution to creditors. Before agreeing, ask whether creditors have accepted the proposed plan, what the full cost and terms are, and what services are included. The CFPB provides further guidance on debt management plans.
Debt settlement is different from credit counseling and can carry serious risks. The CFPB warns that settlement firms may charge expensive fees and encourage missed payments, which can lead to added interest and fees, collection activity, credit harm, or lawsuits. The Federal Trade Commission’s March 2026 alert, Looking for debt relief? Here’s how to avoid a scam, says “only scammers will tell you to pay them upfront before they settle any of your debts or enter you into a debt management plan.” Compare nonprofit counseling and contacting creditors directly before committing to a debt-relief service.
