For aiming, prioritize a sensitivity you can control and a crosshair you can see without covering targets. Treat these as starting points: compare changes in similar gameplay on your own system.
Start with a clear, stable baseline
Hone’s October 1, 2026 guide, based on Valve’s English settings definitions and tooltips extracted September 30, recommends a supported starting profile rather than a benchmarked guarantee. Begin with your monitor’s native output resolution and highest usable refresh rate. These preserve image clarity and take advantage of the display, but do not promise a particular frame rate.
Keep the graphics API—DirectX 11 or Vulkan—that works best on your system. The cited guidance does not establish a universal winner. Likewise, do not treat a particular FPS cap as universally correct: Hone cautions against a fixed cap for everyone, while ProSettings says a refresh-rate cap or unlimited play can suit a system depending on stability and headroom.
Which graphics settings should you change for performance?

- Shadows: Low. This can reduce visual detail, so check whether you still retain useful shadow cues.
- Fog: Low. Compare target and background clarity in the same scene.
- Screen Space Ambient Occlusion: Off.
- Textures: Medium.
- Scaling: Start at 1x. If you need rendering headroom, try an available 1.5x mode; available upscaling choices depend on your hardware and game build.
This is a starting point, not a tested optimal configuration for every PC. Bloom and area lights are optional visual tradeoffs: Hone disables them in its performance-oriented profile, but the tracked tooltips describe their performance costs as small. Turn them back on if you prefer their appearance and performance remains acceptable. The current referenced tooltip treats depth of field as a preference, reports negligible cost, and says it has no current gameplay-performance effect.
How to test whether a change helps
Use Deadlock’s telemetry HUD to distinguish frame-rate problems from network conditions. Change only one or two settings at a time, and compare them in a similar gameplay scenario rather than relying on a different match or scene.

- Play a representative scenario and note the frame rate and network indicators in the telemetry HUD.
- Change one or two settings, such as shadows or fog, leaving the rest unchanged.
- Repeat a comparable scenario. Check both frame stability and whether enemies remain easy to see.
- Keep the change only if it improves your experience; restore it if the visual tradeoff is not worth it.
A network problem is not evidence that a graphics setting is at fault, and no fixed FPS gain is guaranteed. Judge performance stability, target clarity, retained shadow cues, visual preference, display refresh capability, and your sync or latency goals together.
Choose sensitivity and a crosshair for controlled aim
There is no source-supported universal sensitivity value or crosshair design. Choose a sensitivity that lets you make precise adjustments rather than one that merely feels fast. Select a crosshair that is easy to distinguish from the scene without obscuring enemies. Treat any exact value you encounter as a personal starting point, not a prescription; ProSettings’ guidance likewise frames these choices around individual preference.

Recheck settings after updates
iTechGuides reported that Valve’s City Never Sleeps update, published September 29, 2026, included updated Source 2 engine code, rendering performance improvements, and network prediction improvements. Hone also reports that the update introduced readability changes, dedicated visual, audio, and control accessibility settings, and a video-settings preview that temporarily makes the menu transparent to show changes. These are reported update details, not a promise that every option is present in every build. Check the current in-game menu after patches because labels, availability, and performance can change.
When adjusting controls or visibility, verify which accessibility options and preview controls are available in your installed build before following any click-by-click directions; the menu may differ over time.
