DBeaver Community is a strong starting point for people who want one free, open-source client for multiple database families. DataGrip is worth considering for SQL-focused development, Navicat for SQL Server for a dedicated graphical SQL Server tool, and SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) for Microsoft-native SQL Server administration.
None is a proven one-for-one replacement for every dbForge feature. Compare the exact edition you would use, the databases it supports, and whether it covers your development, administration, comparison, and automation tasks.

What to compare before replacing dbForge
dbForge Studio for SQL Server is a development and administration baseline, not just a query editor. Devart lists free Express and paid Standard, Professional, and Enterprise editions; available capabilities vary by tier. Its product materials associate features such as debugging, visual query building, profiling, schema and data comparison and synchronization, source control, testing, and command-line automation with different paid editions. See Devart’s dbForge Studio for SQL Server page and its compatibility and features page.
Before choosing another client, list the tasks you actually perform. A tool can support SQL Server without matching dbForge’s administration, comparison, or automation features. Check these dimensions against the vendor’s current edition-specific documentation:

#1 Best Overall
- Database coverage: Confirm the engines and versions you use, including any cloud databases or managed services.
- SQL development: Look for editing, completion, navigation, debugging, and query-analysis features you rely on.
- Administration: Verify support for object management, security, backup and recovery, and performance visibility as needed.
- Delivery and automation: Check schema or data comparison, synchronization, migration, source control, and command-line workflows.
- Environment and access: Confirm desktop operating-system support and any cloud authentication or connection requirements.
- Licensing: Compare the edition required for your workflow, rather than only the lowest advertised tier.
Best alternatives to dbForge
DBeaver: a multi-engine client with a free starting point
DBeaver Community is described by DBeaver as a free, open-source database management tool. Its supported-source list includes Azure SQL Server alongside other database families, making it a practical first option if you want one client for several kinds of databases. Check the Community overview for current coverage.
DBeaver also offers paid products, and features are not necessarily shared across editions. Review the Enterprise edition documentation and purchase page if a capability you need is not established for Community.

DataGrip: SQL-focused development across platforms
JetBrains positions DataGrip as a cross-platform SQL IDE with first-class Microsoft SQL Server support and support for other databases. It is a candidate for SQL editing and development workflows. Its product description does not establish that it replaces every dbForge administration, comparison, or automation operation, so verify those requirements individually. See JetBrains’ DataGrip SQL Server feature page.
Navicat for SQL Server: a dedicated graphical option
Navicat offers a product specifically for SQL Server and describes it as a graphical database management tool. Its product page lists Azure SQL Database among supported cloud providers and vendors. This makes it relevant when you want a dedicated GUI; the available source does not support detailed claims that it matches dbForge feature by feature. Review Navicat for SQL Server against your workflow.

SQL Server Management Studio belongs on a shortlist for SQL Server-centric administration. Devart’s comparison categorizes SSMS as native SQL Server administration and lists it as free. That is a high-level classification, not an independent feature evaluation; consult Microsoft’s current documentation for detailed capabilities and platform requirements. See Devart’s SQL manager tools comparison.

- Several database families, with a free entry point: Start by evaluating DBeaver Community, then check whether any needed capability requires a paid edition.
- SQL editing and development across platforms: Evaluate DataGrip, and separately confirm that your administration tasks are covered.
- A dedicated SQL Server GUI: Compare Navicat for SQL Server with the specific management and development features you use in dbForge.
- Microsoft-focused SQL Server administration: Include SSMS, verifying details through Microsoft’s current product documentation.
There is no consistent cross-vendor feature matrix or benchmark in the available product sources, so a feature-count or value winner cannot be established from them. Run a task-based comparison: use the same representative database and test your essential work—editing and debugging, administration, comparison or synchronization, and any automation—against the exact editions under consideration. Confirm licensing and cloud-service support directly with each vendor before committing.
