For a quality-focused starting point in Crimson Desert, use Ultra or Cinematic settings for most options, keep ray tracing on, set Volumetric Fog to High, and turn Blur Intensity to 0. Start at native resolution—or the highest render resolution your PC can sustain—then make small, measured changes if performance falls short. This is a baseline, not a guaranteed frame rate: Pearl Abyss says results vary with hardware, software, and individual graphics settings, and the PC version requires DirectX 12 (Pearl Abyss).

Recommended starting settings

TechSpot’s tested recommendations provide a useful quality-preserving baseline. Use the values below as a starting point, not a universal preset; the performance result depends on your GPU, CPU, output resolution, and target frame rate.

Setting Starting value
Model Quality Ultra
Texture Quality Cinematic
Shadow Quality Ultra
Ray Tracing On
Lighting Quality Ultra; try Cinematic if you need to recover performance
Reflection Quality Cinematic
Advanced Weather Effect On
Water Quality Cinematic
Foliage Density Cinematic
Volumetric Fog High
Effect Quality Cinematic
Simulation Quality Cinematic
Post-processing Effect Quality Cinematic
Blur Intensity 0

For rendering, prefer native resolution when performance allows. If you need upscaling, TechSpot recommended DLSS 4.0 or FSR 4 Native in its tested build. Its observations about image quality and artifacts are build-specific, so check how the current version looks on your PC rather than treating one upscaler as the permanent best choice (TechSpot’s settings analysis).

How to tune settings without guessing

Change one factor at a time and compare the same scene, at the same output resolution and camera angle. A busy outdoor area and an indoor scene can stress different parts of the rendering pipeline, so a setting that looks harmless in one place may affect another.

  1. Set your target first. Decide what frame rate feels acceptable to you, then note your display resolution and whether you are aiming for native rendering or willing to use upscaling.
  2. Apply the baseline. Begin with the table above and run through a repeatable scene. Note both perceived smoothness and image quality.
  3. Address render resolution before broadly lowering quality. If performance is short, test a lower internal render resolution or an available upscaling mode. Inspect fine details and indoor lighting as well as the frame rate.
  4. Test demanding settings individually. Model Quality and Lighting Quality are reasonable candidates to lower when the baseline misses your target. Change one setting, repeat the same scene, and keep the change only if the improvement is meaningful to you.
  5. Recheck after a change that affects image quality. If an upscaler or lighting option introduces noise, softness, or other distracting artifacts, compare another supported mode or raise render resolution if your hardware can manage it.

Which settings should you lower first?

Preserve settings with little measured performance impact

In TechSpot’s tests, Texture Quality had virtually no performance impact, and Effect, Simulation, Water, and Post-process Effect Quality produced little measured performance change. That makes them poor first targets for recovering frame rate if you value their visual or gameplay effects. Lower Water Quality may remove surface interactions and ripples. In the tested scenes, Texture Quality at Low saved about 0.5 GB of VRAM but reduced texture fidelity; that result is specific to TechSpot’s hardware and scenes, not a guaranteed saving on every PC.

Evaluate Model Quality and shadows with a controlled comparison

TechSpot describes Model Quality as one of the more demanding individual options. Its test measured about a 2% performance improvement when Shadow Quality moved from Cinematic to Ultra, with no additional gain at lower shadow settings. Those are observations from that test, not expected FPS gains on your system. Start by comparing Model Quality at a lower level if needed, and avoid lowering Shadow Quality below Ultra on the assumption it will keep improving performance.

Ray tracing, upscaling, and lighting trade-offs

Turning off ray tracing may not improve performance

Ray tracing affects reflections, shadows, and global illumination. TechSpot found that disabling it reduced those aspects of image quality without improving performance in its test; in some cases, performance was one or two frames per second lower. That is not proof of how it behaves on every GPU. If you have an older graphics card or are well below your target, compare ray tracing on and off in the same scene rather than assuming the off setting is faster.

Check clarity and lighting when using upscaling

TechSpot observed indoor lighting noise and reduced clarity at lower render resolutions in its tested build, and favored native rendering or the highest feasible render resolution. It reported less noise with DLSS 4.0 than DLSS 4.5 in that build and said FSR 4 performed well on AMD GPUs. The artifact observations came from a pre-release build dated March 13, 2026; they should not be treated as a current, universal ranking of upscaling APIs. Inspect the current game version on your own hardware.

Use ray denoising options only after weighing their cost

TechSpot found that Ray Reconstruction reduced noise in many scenes but forced Max Lighting and carried a substantial performance cost in its test. On an RTX 5060 Ti 16GB, it reported performance at roughly one-third of the Cinematic preset, attributing about half the loss to the forced Max Lighting setting. It also reported visual issues, including rain fading. These results apply to that hardware and tested build; they are not a benchmark for other systems.

Example system tier Editorial starting point What to keep in mind
Low-end Prioritize stable performance with lower resolution and low settings. Expect to make larger image-quality compromises; the recipe does not establish a guaranteed frame rate.
Mid-range Try 1080p native, or 1440p with quality upscaling and a mix of High and Medium settings. Results depend on the particular GPU, CPU, and chosen settings.
High-end Raise detail and use quality upscaling at 4K. This is an editorial example, not a promise of a specific performance level.

Dot Esports’ tier-based settings guide supplies these examples. Pearl Abyss likewise cautions that performance varies with each PC’s hardware and software configuration and with individual graphics settings (official PC performance specifications).
