For an all-around cordless vacuum, the Dyson V15 Detect is the strongest pick in the current testing cited here: RTINGS names it best overall in its September 2026 guide, and Vacuum Wars also places it first on its continuously updated leaderboard. Those are separate publishers’ conclusions, not a universal ranking. The Shark Stratos Cordless IZ862H is a heavier, slower-charging mid-range alternative; the Dyson Gen5 Detect is a premium option with strong results in Vacuum Wars’ 2025 tests.
The right choice depends on your floors and how you clean. A maximum-runtime figure is not runtime at maximum suction, and a suction measurement alone cannot predict pickup on every surface. The comparison below keeps each publisher’s measurements and scoring system distinct.
Which cordless vacuum is best overall?
The Dyson V15 Detect is the best-supported all-around choice among the models compared here. RTINGS’ guide, updated September 21, 2026, names it its best cordless vacuum. Separately, Vacuum Wars names it best overall on its continuously updated 2026 leaderboard. Each result reflects that publisher’s tests and judgment; neither ranking should be treated as a universal winner for every home.
RTINGS reports strong V15 Detect pickup scores across bare floors, carpet, and pet hair, along with high particle-filtration performance. Its main practical cautions are that the dirt compartment is small, dust can escape when emptying the bin, and the tested runtime may not be enough for a large carpeted home. Emptying it outdoors can help limit indoor dust.

All RTINGS scores and runtime ranges in this table come from its 2026 guide; the V15’s 68-minute figure is Vacuum Wars’ reporting. Runtime depends on mode, attachment, and test method, so these figures are not a promise of time at maximum suction. The two publishers’ methods and scales differ; do not compare their values as though they were produced by one shared test.
Dyson V15 Detect: best all-around pick in the cited rankings
RTINGS records 8–75 minutes of battery life, with the exact duration varying by test conditions. Vacuum Wars lists 68 minutes as official battery life, but that figure does not mean the vacuum runs for 68 minutes at its strongest setting. Vacuum Wars also reports 124-inch sealed suction and 17.6 kPa unsealed suction for the V15; those are its measurements and reporting, not a complete measure of cleaning performance.

RTINGS’ pickup scores—8.0 on bare floors, 7.8 on carpet, and 9.0 for pet hair—make the V15 a broadly capable choice rather than a model to select on suction figures alone. Its 6.46 lb (2.93 kg) total weight falls in RTINGS’ average-weight band. The high 9.9 particle-filtration score is RTINGS’ test result, not a medical guarantee.
Shark Stratos Cordless IZ862H: mid-range alternative
RTINGS places the IZ862H in its mid-range category. Its reported 12–63-minute runtime range is longer at the low end and shorter at the maximum than the V15’s listed range, but those endpoints do not establish which vacuum lasts longer in your preferred mode. At 8.73 lb (3.96 kg), the Shark is heavier than the Dyson, and RTINGS reports nearly four hours to recharge.

RTINGS scores the Shark 8.0 for bare-floor pickup, 7.0 for carpet, and 7.3 for pet hair, with a 9.8 particle-filtration score. It describes the construction as more robust-feeling than the V15, a reviewer impression rather than a durability test result. RTINGS also notes weaker performance on thick-pile rugs, so homes with those carpets should weigh that limitation carefully.
Dyson Gen5 Detect: a high-performing premium option
Vacuum Wars named the Gen5 Detect its best-performance cordless vacuum for 2025 based on its own tests. It measured 69 CFM of airflow at the wand, compared with a 42 CFM cordless-category average, and 17.36 kPa unsealed suction. In that same report, the V15 Detect measured 17.64 kPa unsealed suction, illustrating why a single suction number does not settle which vacuum cleans better overall.

Vacuum Wars gave the Gen5 Detect 40/40 in its carpet deep-clean test and 15/15 in its filtration test. It also reported a battery-efficiency score of 27.3 versus a cordless average of 18.8, using its own CFM-per-minute method. These are results on Vacuum Wars’ specific tests and scoring system; they are not general standards and cannot be directly compared with RTINGS scores. What matters beyond suction?
Floor surface and cleaning head
Compare separate pickup tests for hard floors, low-pile and high-pile carpet, rugs, crevices, and pet hair instead of relying on one suction measurement. RTINGS says soft rollers suit bare floors, while bristled heads work better on carpet and pet hair. A head that performs well on one surface may not be the best choice for another.

Runtime in the mode you will use
Look for measured runtime at the relevant power setting and with the relevant attachment. Published maximum runtime commonly reflects lower-power conditions, not sustained maximum suction. RTINGS says a maximum-runtime measurement of 60 minutes or more on low power can suit apartments and small homes; that is RTINGS’ guideline, not a guarantee for every floor plan or cleaning routine.
Weight, reach, and handling
Whole-vacuum weight matters when carrying a machine between floors, while handheld and above-floor cleaning create a different handling burden. RTINGS classifies under 5 lb as lightweight, 5–7 lb as average, and 7 lb or more as heavy within its guide. By that system, the V15 is average and the Stratos is heavy. Those categories are RTINGS’ cutoffs, not an industry-wide standard.
Pet hair, filtration, and bin emptying
For pet owners, check hair pickup and any tangle results as well as filtration. RTINGS’ particle-filtration score can help compare models within its scoring system; it does not certify that a vacuum prevents health effects or replaces appropriate air-cleaning measures. Also consider how much dust escapes when emptying the bin and whether the bin capacity suits your home.
Charging, maintenance, and storage
Recharge time can determine whether a vacuum is ready for a second session, particularly in larger homes; the Stratos’ nearly four-hour recharge is a notable consideration. Before buying, check the exact model’s filter-care requirements, battery replacement options, storage footprint, and accessory compatibility. These details can vary by market and bundle, and should be confirmed against the model’s current product information.

- Start with your floor mix. If your home is mostly bare flooring, prioritize hard-floor pickup and a suitable soft-roller head. For carpet or frequent pet-hair cleanup, compare carpet and hair pickup results and confirm the included head suits those surfaces.
- Set a realistic runtime target. Decide whether you will clean in one continuous session and which suction mode you normally use. Treat a low-power maximum as a best-case reference, not a maximum-suction runtime.
- Check the physical burden. Consider stairs, overhead cleaning, storage, and how often you will carry the vacuum. Compare whole-unit weight while remembering that handheld handling is a separate factor.
- Account for ownership details. Check bin capacity and emptying, charging time, battery and filter care, and the accessories in the exact bundle. Verify current price and stock when shopping because both can change.
- Use lab rankings as evidence, not a substitute for fit. RTINGS and Vacuum Wars use different methodologies, so compare products within each publisher’s tests rather than combining their scores into one ranking.
