How to choose by device
For a phone
An attached controller such as Backbone One, Razer Kishi V2, or GameSir X4 Aileron keeps the controls alongside the phone for handheld play. Xbox’s catalog lists Backbone One, the GameSir X4 Aileron for Android, and the Razer Kishi V2 iPhone Xbox Edition. Match the listing to your phone’s operating system, model, and port; the catalog does not confirm fit for every handset generation.
If you prefer a full-size grip and buttons, the Turtle Beach Recon Cloud Hybrid uses a clip to hold a phone. Xbox specifies compatibility with phones 47–90 mm wide and Bluetooth support for Android 8.0 or later. Measure the phone’s width and check how its case affects the fit before relying on the clip.

For a Windows PC
A separate controller is usually the more flexible form factor at a desk. Xbox Cloud Gaming accepts compatible controllers over Bluetooth or USB. The Recon Cloud Hybrid is another option: Xbox specifies Bluetooth and wired Windows PC play for that product. Check the controller’s connection method against your PC and consult Xbox’s compatibility information for the exact model.
For a TV
Xbox says cloud play on TVs can work with Xbox controllers, Sony PlayStation controllers, and more, but this is not a guarantee for every controller model or television. Use Xbox’s verified-controller guidance for the specific TV setup rather than assuming that a controller supported on a phone or PC will also work on the TV.

Check these details before buying
- Device and operating system: Confirm the controller supports your phone, PC, or TV setup, including any stated OS minimum.
- Connector: For an attached phone controller, match its connector to your handset and confirm the specific model fits.
- Form factor: Decide whether you want a controller that attaches to the phone or a separate pad. For a clip-style model, check phone width and case clearance.
- Connection: Confirm whether the intended setup uses Bluetooth or USB and whether your device supports that connection.
- Verified model status: Xbox’s general compatibility statement does not establish that every controller works everywhere. Check the exact controller and platform combination.
- Controls in the game: Some cloud games provide touch controls, but touch support is game-specific.
Cloud play requirements beyond the controller
Controller compatibility is only one part of setup. Xbox’s US cloud-gaming requirements page lists a minimum download speed of 10 Mbps, says some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality, and recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi. These are Xbox’s stated requirements and guidance, not a guarantee of performance; requirements and availability can vary by device, region, subscription plan, and game. - Choose an attached controller if you mainly play on a phone and have verified its model and connector fit.
