The best co-op game to play while you wait depends on who is joining and what kind of session you want. For two people looking for a story, consider It Takes Two; for a quick, chaotic climb, try Peak; for online co-op horror, look at R.E.P.O.; and for coordinated squad combat, consider Helldivers 2. If your group wants a world to keep returning to, there are longer-running options such as Valheim and Deep Rock Galactic.
There is no universal winner: player count, online versus local play, tone, and how much time your group can commit matter more than a blanket ranking. GameSpot describes the appeal as playing together on Steam “where you work together to achieve a goal”; the recommendations below sort that goal by the kind of session your group wants.
Choose by group size and session style
Start with the practical constraint: how many people are playing, and do you want one self-contained session or a game you can return to over several evenings? Co-op labels alone do not tell you whether a game supports couch play, split-screen, LAN, or only online play. Confirm the current Steam listing before buying, especially if local play or a particular player count is essential.
- Two players and a story: investigate It Takes Two.
- A short, chaotic outing: consider Peak.
- Online horror with a group: consider R.E.P.O..
- Coordinated squad combat: consider Helldivers 2.
- A world or routine to revisit: compare longer-session games such as Valheim, Stardew Valley, and Deep Rock Galactic.
Prices and availability change, so check each title’s current Steam page rather than relying on an old sale price or assuming every recommendation suits your platform and setup.

For two players who want a story: It Takes Two
It Takes Two is a story-driven option built around two players. GameSpot describes it as two-player-only, which makes it a natural fit for a pair but a poor match if three or more friends need to play together. Check the current Steam listing for the purchase, platform, and co-op details that apply to your setup before committing.
For a quick, chaotic climb: Peak
Peak centers on climbing through hazardous environments with friends. GameSpot describes its environment as changing daily, while GamesRadar notes proximity voice chat as part of the social experience. It suits a group that wants to tackle hazards together and communicate on the fly, rather than settle into a long narrative campaign. Verify current player limits and whether its supported play arrangement matches your group on Steam.

For online co-op horror: R.E.P.O.
Steam describes R.E.P.O. as “An online co-op horror game with up to 6 players.” Its listing also highlights proximity voice chat and physics-based object retrieval. That combination points to a game where staying coordinated while handling awkward, dangerous cargo is part of the appeal.
Steam labels R.E.P.O. Early Access. Its feature set and status can change, so review the live store page before buying. The listing specifies online co-op; do not assume that means local or split-screen play.

For coordinated squad combat: Helldivers 2
GamesRadar describes Helldivers 2 as a squad-based online shooter and notes that friendly fire is always on. That rule can make cooperation funny and hectic, but it also means careless shots can hurt teammates. It is a better fit for friends who enjoy communicating through combat than for a group seeking a relaxed, low-stakes session.
Check the current Steam listing for player limits, system requirements, and cross-play details; those specifics should not be inferred from a general description of the game.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
For a world to return to over multiple sessions
If “while we wait” means you want something to occupy several evenings, an ongoing world or recurring cooperative activity may fit better than a single outing. GameGeeker’s editorial shortlist includes the following possibilities, but its inclusion is not a guarantee that each game suits every group or supports the same play modes.
| Game | Why it may fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Valheim | Consider it if your group wants a survival-and-building world to revisit. | Current player count, online or local modes, and requirements on its Steam listing. |
| Stardew Valley | Consider it if your group prefers a gentler, routine-driven shared experience. | Current co-op configuration and supported player count on its Steam listing. |
| Deep Rock Galactic | Consider it if you want repeated cooperative missions rather than a two-person story. | Current player count and online/local support on its Steam listing. |
| Baldur’s Gate 3 | Consider it if your group is looking for a longer story-led role-playing game. | Current co-op setup, player limit, and platform requirements. |
| Lethal Company | Consider it if your group wants cooperative tension and unpredictable runs. | Current player count and supported play arrangements. |
| Sea of Thieves | Consider it if your group wants shared adventures in a persistent online setting. | Current Steam availability, player limits, and cross-play details. |
| Don’t Starve Together | Consider it if your group wants a survival-focused game to keep playing together. | Current co-op options, player count, and platform requirements. |
The descriptions in this table are selection cues, not a substitute for each title’s current Steam feature list. In particular, confirm whether a game supports the exact online, LAN, shared-screen, or split-screen setup you need.

Check these details before you buy
- Match the player count. Confirm the supported number of players on the current Steam listing; a two-player game will not work for a larger group.
- Confirm how you will play. Look for the exact mode you need: online, LAN, shared screen, or split screen. One does not imply another.
- Check commitment and tone. Decide whether you want a short outing, repeatable missions, a persistent world, horror, tactical combat, or a longer story.
- Review Early Access status. For R.E.P.O., Steam marks the game Early Access, so its status and features may change.
- Check current compatibility and cost. Review operating-system and hardware requirements, cross-play where relevant, and the live price. A sale price or review count can change after publication.
Which Steam co-op game should you pick?
Choose It Takes Two for a two-person story, Peak for a hazardous group climb, R.E.P.O. for online retrieval horror, and Helldivers 2 for squad combat where friendly fire adds risk. For a longer shared commitment, compare the ongoing-world options against your group’s preferred pace and verify their current Steam features before purchasing.
