The best Chromebook alternative depends on what you need to run and how you use your laptop. Choose Windows for traditional desktop programs, specialist software, or the broad PC game catalogue; choose a MacBook if macOS apps or Apple-device continuity matter most; and choose a Windows 2-in-1 if you want Chromebook-style touch and tablet modes. Before buying, check the exact model’s apps, peripherals, memory, ports, weight, and price—not just its operating system.
Which Chromebook alternative fits your needs?
| Option | Best fit | Key tradeoff or check |
|---|---|---|
| Windows laptop | Traditional desktop apps, specialist tools, a wide choice of hardware, or broad PC gaming support. | Confirm that your exact apps, peripherals, and drivers work with the model’s processor architecture. This matters especially for Windows on Arm. |
| MacBook Neo | Everyday browsing, writing, streaming, video calls, and mainstream productivity in a lower-priced entry into macOS. | No touchscreen; the reviewed guide reports an 8GB memory ceiling and no Thunderbolt. Check the current product listing. |
| MacBook Air M5 | Someone who wants more memory and storage, Thunderbolt ports, and Apple-device integration. | Higher price, and macOS may not suit Windows-centric apps or devices. |
| Windows 2-in-1 | A buyer who wants laptop, tablet, stand, or tent use, with touch and possibly pen input. | Verify that the exact configuration includes the touchscreen and pen support you want. A convertible can be less comfortable to hold as a tablet than a smaller, lighter device. |
| Lightweight Windows on Arm | Portability and newer hardware options, such as configurations in the ASUS Zenbook A14 range. | Check support for the apps, assistive technology, and peripherals you rely on; some depend on Arm-native software or drivers. |
These are buying directions, not guarantees about every laptop in a category. Broad platform comparisons can help narrow the field, but compatibility and features vary by model and configuration (Best Buy; Which?).
Choose based on the work your Chromebook cannot do
Pick Windows for desktop software, specialist tools, and PC games
Windows is the most natural direction if your reason for leaving ChromeOS is a required Windows desktop program, a work or school application, or access to a broad PC game catalogue. Check the exact program’s requirements and its publisher’s compatibility guidance before choosing a laptop; do the same for any older printer, scanner, audio interface, or other device that depends on a driver.
For a Windows-on-Arm laptop, the architecture check is especially important. Microsoft says peripherals need either built-in Windows drivers or vendor-published Arm64 drivers, and recommends confirming compatibility with the app publisher or assistive-technology vendor where relevant (Windows 11 system requirements; Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ). Microsoft says most printers are supported, including Mopria-compatible printers, but that does not establish compatibility for every printer or peripheral.

Pick a MacBook for macOS apps or Apple-device continuity
A MacBook makes particular sense if you already use an iPhone or iPad and value continuity between Apple devices, or if you need macOS software. The Neo and Air M5 serve different configuration levels in the cited 2026 lineup: the Neo is positioned for everyday tasks, while the Air has more base memory and storage and more capable port options. Check that the apps and accessories you depend on are available for macOS before switching.
Pick a Windows 2-in-1 to keep touch and tablet use
If you use your Chromebook as a tablet, prop it up for video, or write with a stylus, a convertible Windows laptop can preserve those ways of working. Microsoft describes 2-in-1 devices as usable as both laptops and tablets; a traditional laptop may be more comfortable for long typing sessions or specialist software (Microsoft: desktop, laptop, or tablet). Touchscreen, pen support, and included accessories differ by configuration, so verify the listing rather than relying on the product family name.

The figures below are US snapshots from TechRepublic’s 2026 roundup, not permanent prices or a guarantee of availability. Retailer, configuration, and promotion can change the price; verify the specific listing before purchase (TechRepublic’s Chromebook alternatives roundup).
| Model | Reported configuration or range | Reported US price snapshot | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dell XPS 13 (2026) | Base configuration: Intel Core 5 320, 8GB memory, 256GB SSD, 13.4-inch touchscreen. Dell-listed starting weight: 2.2 pounds. | From $699.99 (TechRepublic, 2026). | Compact, lightweight Windows option with a touchscreen. Its base 8GB memory and 256GB storage may not suit every workload; consider the actual configuration you will keep. |
| MacBook Neo | Apple A18 Pro, 8GB unified memory, 256GB SSD, 13-inch Liquid Retina display, 2.7 pounds. | From $699 (TechRepublic, 2026). | Entry into macOS for everyday tasks. No touchscreen and limited USB-C connectivity; the reviewed Tom’s Guide configuration has an 8GB memory ceiling and no Thunderbolt. |
| HP OmniBook X Flip 14 | Cited configuration: Intel Core Ultra 5 325, 16GB memory, 512GB SSD, 14-inch 2K multitouch screen; four convertible modes. | $929.99 for the cited configuration (TechRepublic, 2026). | Touch and convertible modes preserve tablet-style use, but the cited model is heavier and less convenient to handle as a tablet than lighter models. |
| ASUS Zenbook A14 | Range starts below 2.18 pounds; OLED displays, with configurations up to 32GB memory and 1TB SSD. Some 2026 configurations use Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Elite. | From $1,099.99 (TechRepublic, 2026). | Prioritize the exact SKU: range-level weight, display, memory, storage, and processor claims do not describe every configuration. For Snapdragon models, check Arm app and peripheral support. |
| MacBook Air M5 | Base features reported: 16GB unified memory, 512GB SSD, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, MagSafe charging, and support for up to two external displays. | From $1,299 (TechRepublic, 2026). | More base memory, storage, and connectivity than the cited Neo configuration, at a higher starting price. Apple rates it for up to 18 hours of video streaming; that is a manufacturer rating, not a review test. |
Check the whole configuration, not just the platform
- Apps and peripherals: List the programs and devices you cannot replace. Check support for the exact operating system and processor architecture, and for drivers if a peripheral requires them.
- Memory and storage: Compare the specific configuration you can buy. A model family may offer much more memory or storage than its base model, and memory may not be upgradeable.
- Screen and form factor: Decide on screen size, touch, pen support, and whether laptop, tablet, tent, or stand modes are useful. Confirm these features for the exact SKU.
- Ports and displays: Count the ports you need for charging, accessories, and external screens. Check display support and whether a hub would be an acceptable workaround for your setup.
- Weight and battery: Compare the weight of the listed configuration and consider how you carry it. Battery figures from different sources and methods are not directly interchangeable: Tom’s Guide measured 13 hours 28 minutes for the Neo in its battery test, while Apple’s Air M5 figure is a video-streaming rating reported by TechRepublic. Neither guarantees runtime for your workload (Tom’s Guide’s MacBook Neo review).
- Gaming and ecosystem: If games are a main reason to switch, confirm that the titles and services you use work on the chosen platform. Also consider whether your phone and other devices make Windows or macOS a better fit.
- Total cost: Compare the price of the memory and storage configuration you actually need, not only the advertised starting price. Include any accessories required for your ports, pen use, or preferred setup.
Do Windows minimum requirements tell you what to buy?
No. Microsoft’s Windows 11 minimums include a supported 1 GHz or faster two-core processor, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, UEFI and Secure Boot capability, and a display larger than 9 inches at 720p or higher. These are eligibility minimums, not a recommended target for a comfortable laptop or heavier workload. Specific applications and features may need more. Microsoft also says Windows 11 Home and Pro for personal use require internet access and a Microsoft account during initial setup (Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements).
