Prices are market- and date-specific. Tom’s Hardware reported that the U.S. price of the Quest 3S 128GB rose from $300 to $350 effective April 19, 2026. Check the current seller listing before buying; the $299.99 figure in Meta’s 2024 announcement was the launch price, not a current-price guarantee.
Which cheap VR headset should you buy?
Start with the Quest 3S 128GB if you want standalone VR at the lower end of the mainstream market. Its all-in-one design means you can use it wirelessly without buying or setting up a gaming PC. A PC connection is optional, not required.
Consider the Quest 3 instead if you are willing to pay more for a sharper image and a wider horizontal field of view. The two headsets share the same chipset and onboard memory in Meta’s comparison, but the Quest 3 has higher per-eye resolution and uses pancake optics rather than the Quest 3S’s Fresnel lenses. Independent buying guides identify the Quest 3S as the value-first choice and the Quest 3 as the optical step-up.

What does the Quest 3S cost in 2026?
In the United States, Meta announced a $299.99 launch price for the Quest 3S in September 2024. Tom’s Hardware reported that the 128GB model’s price increased from $300 to $350 effective April 19, 2026. These are dated figures, not a promise about today’s retail price: sales, bundles, stock and seller can change the amount you pay. Compare the live listing and confirm that the headset is new and the advertised storage is 128GB. Prices outside the U.S. may differ.

What you get with the cheaper Quest 3S
Standalone play without a PC
The Quest 3S is a wireless all-in-one VR device, so a gaming computer is not a prerequisite. If you already have a suitable PC, you can also connect a Quest headset to it by cable or wirelessly, according to PC Gamer. That option can add setup and hardware considerations, but it does not change the headset’s ability to run standalone.

Access to Meta’s app and game library
Meta says the Quest 3S works with its library of thousands of apps and games, including titles exclusive to Quest 3 and Quest 3S. That catalog-size statement is Meta’s claim; it is not an independently counted total. The launch announcement describes the headset as an entry point for people new to mixed reality or upgrading from an older Quest: Meta’s announcement.
Lower-cost optics
The compromise is visual, not just a spec-sheet difference. The Quest 3S has fewer pixels per eye and a narrower horizontal field of view than the Quest 3, and reviewers distinguish its Fresnel lenses from the Quest 3’s pancake optics. If you are particularly sensitive to image clarity or peripheral view, weigh those differences against the price before choosing.

Fit and comfort
Independent 2026 coverage flags the stock strap or comfort during long sessions as a weakness. Treat replacement straps or facial interfaces as optional add-ons, not part of the headset’s standard value: added cost changes the total, and compatibility depends on the exact accessory. Verify that a specific product explicitly supports Quest 3S before ordering.

A dedicated PC VR headset is worth considering if PC gaming is your priority and you already own a capable computer. It is not a like-for-like cheaper alternative for someone who needs to buy both headset and computer: a PC-dependent setup adds hardware and configuration requirements. The available comparisons do not establish a clearly comparable current budget PC-only model and price, so there is no well-supported PC-only pick to name here.

For a buyer who wants the option of PC VR without giving up standalone use, the Quest 3S or Quest 3 can also connect to a gaming PC. Choose between those two based on budget and optical preference rather than assuming a PC connection is necessary.
