Choose the form factor before the model
Over-ear headphones
Over-ear models sit around the ears rather than inside them. They are worth considering if you dislike in-ear tips or want a larger headphone form for commuting, desk listening or travel. Comfort still depends on head shape, clamping force and how long you wear them; a low price or impressive feature list cannot establish that a particular pair will fit you.

In-ear earbuds
Earbuds are compact and easy to carry, but their seal and stability depend on your ears and the supplied tips. A poor seal can affect comfort and sound, including how well noise cancellation works. If fit is uncertain, favor a retailer with a practical return policy rather than assuming that a popular model will suit every ear.
Open-ear and wired options
Open-ear clip-ons such as the Soundcore C30i avoid sealing the ear canal, which can help you hear ambient sound. They are a different compromise from ANC earbuds: expect less isolation and bass. Wired earbuds avoid charging and wireless codec compatibility questions, but connector choice matters; the SoundMagic E80D requires compatible USB-C audio output.
Best cheap earbuds for noise cancellation: Anker Soundcore Space A40
RTINGS’ 2026 under-$100 guide names the Space A40 its best tested earbuds in that category, highlighting ANC that reduces both low- and high-frequency background noise. That makes them a sensible first comparison for someone who wants compact earbuds for travel or noisy surroundings.
The caveat is practical: RTINGS notes that the fit can be loose for some listeners and that microphone quality is a relative weakness. If you take frequent calls, compare them with the CMF Buds Pro 2 instead of treating noise cancellation as the only deciding feature.
Best feature-rich earbuds near $100: EarFun Air Pro 4+
SoundGuys names the EarFun Air Pro 4+ its overall pick under $100. Its 2026 page lists Bluetooth 6.0, aptX Lossless and Auracast, and gives an MSRP of $99.99. The same page showed a $99.99 Amazon price at the time it was viewed; neither amount guarantees today’s price or stock.

Advanced codecs do not automatically improve sound on every phone. The source device must support the relevant codec, and the exact product version should match the listing. Compare the EarFun against the Space A40 by prioritizing the feature you will use: codec compatibility and the EarFun’s listed feature set, or RTINGS’ assessment of the Space A40’s ANC.
Best budget over-ear pick: CMF Headphone Pro
RTINGS changed its under-$100 budget recommendation to the CMF Headphone Pro in July 2026, pointing to its more durable build. Tom’s Guide also describes it as a $99 value pick. These are separate review judgments, not proof that every buyer will find its fit or sound preferable.
Before ordering, confirm the exact name: CMF Headphone Pro is the over-ear model, while CMF Buds Pro 2 are earbuds. Check the current local price and version, then consider whether over-ear headphones suit your comfort and portability needs better than earbuds.

TechRadar’s 2026 guide calls the 1MORE SonoFlow Pro HQ51 its best over-ear headphones under $90/£90. It lists rated battery life of 65 hours with ANC on and 100 hours with ANC off. Those are the guide’s stated ratings, not a guarantee of the runtime an individual listener will get.
The same guide flags a plasticky, slightly flimsy feel, cheap-feeling controls and a messy app situation. Weigh that build and usability feedback against the appeal of the stated battery ratings rather than choosing on the largest number alone.
Best alternatives for calls, awareness, small ears and wired listening
For calls and meetings: CMF Buds Pro 2
RTINGS selects the CMF Buds Pro 2 as its under-$100 work pick, saying their microphone recording is clearer than the Space A40’s. RTINGS also cautions that they do not excel at every work-performance measure, so treat the recommendation as a call-focused option rather than a claim that they lead every category.

SoundGuys includes the JBuds Mini as its small-ear pick. Its page showed an Amazon price of $33.99 when viewed, but prices change and the label does not guarantee a fit for every small ear. Consider them an alternative to compare, not a fit promise.
For wired audio: SoundMagic E11C and E80D
What Hi-Fi? describes the E11C as a long-running award-winning wired option and the E80D as a strong USB-C alternative. The USB-C model only works when the connected device provides compatible USB-C audio output; check your phone or computer’s audio support and connector before buying.

Decide between isolation and awareness
ANC earbuds are designed to reduce outside noise, while open-ear designs let more environmental sound reach you. Choose based on where you listen and whether hearing your surroundings matters. These are different goals, not interchangeable versions of the same feature.
Prioritize fit and comfort
Comfort is personal, whether a headphone rests on your head or an earbud sits in your ear. RTINGS says listening habits and preferences matter; What Hi-Fi? likewise emphasizes comfort even at budget prices. Use review fit notes as clues, and avoid treating another listener’s experience as a guarantee.

Match call quality to how you work
If meetings and calls are central, look for microphone assessments rather than assuming that a model with ANC or many features will also have the best voice pickup. The evidence here points to the CMF Buds Pro 2 as a clearer-recording alternative to the Space A40, while RTINGS describes the C30i microphone as disappointing.
Read battery figures by metric
Battery numbers are not directly comparable unless they describe the same thing. TechRadar’s 1MORE figures are rated over-ear runtime with ANC on or off; SoundGuys also reports per-charge battery measures for earbuds, which should not be confused with a case’s extra charges or a manufacturer’s combined total. Look for the test conditions and whether a figure is a rating or a measured result.
Check codec, water resistance and exact version
Confirm that a phone supports any codec you care about, and check the water-resistance rating for the exact model and regional version if exposure to sweat or rain matters. A feature listed for one version should not be assumed to apply to a similarly named product or every regional listing.
Recheck price and stock locally
The US-dollar prices cited above are publisher page snapshots from 2026, not universal or live offers. Availability, currency, regional versions and sales can differ. Compare the full model name on a local retailer listing and verify the current price before deciding.

The recommendations come from publishers using their own review methods, so rankings should be read within each guide’s category and criteria. RTINGS says it buys and tests products for its recommendations and states that it has tested over 320 wireless earbuds and in-ear headphones on its 2026 under-$100 earbuds page. That is RTINGS’ stated coverage, not an industry-wide count. SoundGuys says it combines objective measurements with real-world reviewer use; TechRadar says products in its guide were tested. Their methods and category choices are not a single standardized laboratory ranking.
Sound quality is also a matter of preference. Use reviews and measurements to narrow options, then weigh the trade-offs that affect your own listening—fit, isolation, call use, battery metric and device compatibility—rather than interpreting “best” as a universal result.
