Choose the JBL Clip 5 instead if clipping a speaker to a bag or strap matters more than a pocket-sized shape. The right choice depends on your actual budget, how you’ll carry it, and whether you value loudness, battery life or water and dust protection most.
Which cheap Bluetooth speaker should you buy?
There is no single winner for every buyer: the broad “cheap” category and a strict “under $50” budget point to different models. TechRadar’s 2026 buying guide calls the JBL Go 5 its best cheap Bluetooth speaker, while RTINGS names the Soundcore Select 4 Go its best Bluetooth speaker under $50. These are published reviewer recommendations, not a side-by-side test conducted for this article.
| Speaker | Best fit | Price evidence | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| JBL Go 5 | A compact general-purpose option if you can spend above $50 when needed | TechRadar listed a $54.95 official price and a $40 target price in 2026 | Prices may change and vary by country or seller; verify the local price before buying. |
| Anker Soundcore Select 4 Go | Buyers whose ceiling is strictly below $50 | RTINGS names it its best Bluetooth speaker under $50; a current local price is not stated | Check the live listing to confirm it falls within your budget. |
| JBL Clip 5 | People who want a speaker that clips onto a bag or strap | Current price not stated | Its value depends on whether the clip-on form is useful to you. |
| Soundcore 3 | Buyers prioritizing loudness among cheap speakers | Current price not stated | RTINGS identifies it as its “Best Loud Cheap Bluetooth Speaker” in its broader 2026 roundup. |
| Tribit PocketGo | Shoppers seeking another small budget option | Tom’s Guide described it as under $30 in a 2026 roundup | That is publication-time context, not a verified live price; check availability and current cost. |
Is the JBL Go 5 worth considering?
TechRadar’s 2026 review coverage calls the Go 5 “the best cheap Bluetooth speaker” its reviewer had tested. That is a subjective verdict, not a guarantee it will suit every listener or budget. The outlet’s buying-guide entry lists an eight-hour battery claim, a stated frequency response of 87 Hz–20 kHz, Bluetooth 6.0, USB-C and IP68, and reports an April 2026 release. JBL’s product sheet describes the speaker as compact, waterproof and drop-proof, and says sound can be adjusted in the app. Treat those figures and durability features as manufacturer or reviewer claims, not independent verification of performance in your use.
TechRadar’s 2026 entry lists $54.95 as the official price and $40 as its target price. If you need to stay below $50, compare the Go 5’s live local price with the Select 4 Go rather than treating the target price as guaranteed. The Go 5 is also a newer-generation alternative to the Go 4 in 2026 coverage; that alone does not establish that it is the better buy for everyone.

When does the Soundcore Select 4 Go make more sense?
RTINGS names the Soundcore Select 4 Go its best Bluetooth speaker under $50 and a cheap small-speaker pick. That makes it the more direct starting point when your budget limit is firm. The recommendation does not establish that it will always cost less than $50 where you live: check the current listing before deciding.
If your priority is a small speaker at the lowest possible price, Tom’s Guide’s 2026 waterproof-speaker roundup described the Tribit PocketGo as under $30. That price is a dated roundup reference, not a current quote. Compare its exact water-protection claim and intended use with the listing rather than assuming every inexpensive waterproof speaker can safely be submerged.

Should you choose a clip-on speaker instead?
The JBL Clip 5 is the alternative to consider when attaching a speaker to a bag, belt loop or strap is more useful than slipping one into a pocket. RTINGS compares it with the Go 5 across characteristics including portability, build, controls, loudness, battery and connectivity. Choose based on the carrying method you will actually use; a clip-on form is a practical advantage only if you need it.
How to compare cheap Bluetooth speakers before buying
- Set your real price ceiling. A product called “cheap” may still exceed a strict $50 budget. Distinguish a published target price from a live offer.
- Match size and shape to how you carry it. A compact pocket speaker and a clip-on model solve different portability needs.
- Consider sound and maximum volume. The Soundcore 3 is RTINGS’ loud-cheap-speaker pick in its 2026 roundup; a loudness-focused recommendation is not automatically the best choice for every use.
- Read battery figures as claims, not guarantees. The Go 5’s eight-hour figure is stated by TechRadar; actual playback time can vary with volume and use.
- Check the exact durability rating and instructions. Water, dust and drop-protection claims are model-specific. Do not infer that a speaker is safe to submerge—or indestructible—from the word “waterproof.”
- Confirm connectivity and app features. JBL lists Bluetooth 6.0, USB-C and app-based sound adjustment for the Go 5; consider which features you will use.
What to know about water resistance
Water and dust protection can be useful around a pool or outdoors, but ratings and maker claims apply to a specific model and its stated conditions. JBL’s Go 5 sheet describes it as waterproof and drop-proof, while TechRadar lists IP68. Before exposing any speaker to water, check the maker’s exact instructions for that model. A rating does not make a device immune to damage, and protection should not be generalized from one speaker to another.
