There is no universal winner among these cart-abandonment tools. For eligible Shopify checkouts, Shopify Messaging is the documented native option for a straightforward recovery email. Omnisend is a fit for stores that want prebuilt cart and checkout workflows with email, SMS, and push blocks. Klaviyo offers more control over sequences and cart-value branching. The right choice depends on which shopping event you want to recover, whether you can identify and contact the shopper, your store platform, and the full cost of contacts and messages.
“Cart abandonment” is often used as an umbrella term, but the trigger matters: a shopper may leave after adding a product without starting checkout, or leave after beginning checkout. Those are different events, and not every tool or native platform reminder covers both.

First, choose the event you want to recover
Cart abandonment: items added, checkout not started
Omnisend defines cart abandonment as a shopper adding items without starting checkout. Klaviyo labels the corresponding event trigger “Added to Cart.” This is useful when you want to reach shoppers earlier, but it depends on the store integration recording the add-to-cart event and the shopper being identifiable to the messaging system.
#1 Best Overall
Checkout abandonment: checkout started, order not completed
Omnisend defines checkout abandonment as starting checkout without completing the purchase. Klaviyo uses “Started Checkout” as a distinct trigger. Shopify’s documented native recovery email is specifically an abandoned-checkout workflow, not evidence of a general add-to-cart automation.
Before setting up a flow, map the event to the intended audience and message. A checkout recovery link solves a different problem from an email that reminds an identified shopper about products they viewed or added before checkout.
1. Shopify Messaging: native checkout recovery for eligible Shopify stores
Shopify’s documented automation sends an email containing a link back to a customer’s abandoned checkout. You can set the audience and send delay, and manage the new automation in Shopify Messaging; Shopify Flow can be used to edit it. Shopify also provides recovery reporting in Shopify Messaging.
Eligibility and behavior
- The new automation applies to Online Store checkout. Shopify’s migration documentation also lists Buy Button checkout; Shop app checkout is not eligible.
- By default, the automation sends only to customers subscribed to email marketing. The audience setting can be changed.
- Shopify documents cases where the email is not delivered, including a prior purchase before the message sends, unavailable items, a high-risk block by Shopify Payments, a Shop app checkout, and certain free-order cases.
- Opting in to the new automation is permanent: you cannot switch back to the legacy checkout email workflow.
Shopify says, “You can’t disable or expire an abandoned checkout link after you send it.” Send the link only to the intended customer. See Shopify’s Recovering abandoned checkouts documentation for the recovery email and link behavior.
Where Shopify Messaging fits—and where it does not
Choose this route when your store uses an eligible Shopify checkout and a simple email reminder is sufficient. The documented feature is checkout recovery by email; it does not establish a general pre-checkout cart flow or multichannel SMS and push automation. No Shopify plan price for this feature is stated in the cited documentation.

2. Omnisend: prebuilt cart and checkout workflows with channel blocks
Omnisend distinguishes the two abandonment events and provides separate prebuilt abandoned-cart and abandoned-checkout workflows. The workflows can include email, SMS, and push blocks, with trigger and audience filters. Checkout presets include an email-only sequence and a sequence with three emails plus an SMS. An inactivity period can help avoid sending while a shopper is still adding items.
Identity and integration limitations
These workflows act only on identified contacts. Omnisend’s help guidance says that for Shopify, BigCommerce, and WooCommerce, phone numbers for new contacts sync only after the first order. In that described circumstance, a newly checked-out shopper who abandons before ordering may be reachable by email but not SMS. Do not assume a phone field at checkout means the number is immediately usable in an SMS flow.
Product content also needs careful configuration. An abandoned-product email block can show product details, but its “Shop Now” button leads to the product page. To return the shopper to the full cart, the workflow needs a separate button using the recovery URL.

Omnisend warns that running its recovery reminder alongside an overlapping store-platform reminder can overwhelm customers. Disable the overlapping platform flow manually, or use suppression logic so the same event does not trigger duplicate messages.
Plans and SMS costs
Omnisend’s vendor-published 2026 plan guidance lists Free at $0 per month for up to 250 contacts and 500 emails, Standard starting at $16 per month, and Pro starting at $59 per month. Standard email credits are based on contact count. Pro includes unlimited email subject to its stated fair-use policy.
Rank #3
For paid subscriptions begun on or after May 4, 2026, SMS is available only on Pro and is an add-on with volume-based pricing. Omnisend lists US and Canada Pro SMS starting at $0.007 per message for those subscribers; rates vary by destination country and volume. Standard SMS is unavailable to new paid subscribers from that date. Non-subscribers who receive automated messages may count as billable contacts, which can change the total bill. These are starting terms, not a complete estimate for a store’s contact count and message usage.
Who should consider it
Omnisend is the strongest fit in this comparison when a store wants prebuilt flows for both cart and checkout events and wants to combine email with SMS or push. The contact-identification requirement, integration-specific phone syncing, duplicate-flow risk, and billable-contact rules matter as much as the advertised starting plan.
3. Klaviyo: customizable sequences and cart-value branches
Klaviyo’s documented abandoned-cart flows can be built after ecommerce integration and customized with email and SMS content, multiple messages, and branches based on cart value. Its terminology separates “Added to Cart” and “Started Checkout,” making it possible to build for either event rather than treating every abandoner as the same audience.
Flow design and incentive timing
Klaviyo advises disabling a store platform’s default recovery emails when they overlap with a Klaviyo flow, to avoid duplicate reminders. It also cautions against putting a coupon in the first email: an immediate discount can train shoppers to abandon carts expecting an incentive. If an offer is appropriate, Klaviyo suggests reserving it for a later message or limiting it to first-time purchasers. Its guide states: “If you would like to include an incentive in your abandoned cart flow, it’s best to hold off until the final email, or only offer it to people who have never purchased before.” Read its How to create an abandoned cart flow guide.
Integration timing and cost evidence
Klaviyo notes that event syncing can vary for integrations beyond Shopify and BigCommerce, which may delay trigger data. That matters if a flow depends on a timely add-to-cart or checkout event. The cited material does not establish current Klaviyo pricing, a complete plan comparison, or independently verified recovery outcomes, so no price or performance ranking is assigned here.

Who should consider it
Consider Klaviyo when the store needs more control over message sequences, content, and cart-value-based branches than a simple reminder provides. Build around the event data the integration actually syncs, and avoid running its flow in parallel with a platform reminder for the same event.
How to choose the right tool for your store
1. Match the trigger to the abandonment point
Decide whether the goal is to recover a shopper who added products but never began checkout, a shopper who began checkout but did not buy, or both. Shopify’s documented native feature is for checkout recovery; Omnisend and Klaviyo document distinct cart and checkout event options.
2. Check whether shoppers can be identified and contacted
A workflow cannot reach every anonymous visitor. Confirm that the relevant event and customer identity reach the tool, and that the recipient is eligible under the store’s audience and consent settings. For Omnisend, identified contacts are required; its described phone-sync limitation can rule out SMS for some new abandoners.
3. Compare channel reach with actual message costs
Email, SMS, and push are not interchangeable. Check the channel blocks, plan eligibility, message limits, destination-country rates, and whether automated recipients who are not subscribers count as billable contacts. Omnisend’s post-May 4, 2026 terms make subscription start date relevant to SMS access.
4. Decide how much workflow control is necessary
A single delayed recovery email may be enough for a checkout reminder. Multiple messages, cart-value branches, inactivity timing, and different content by event call for more workflow configuration. Incentives should be a deliberate later-stage choice, rather than an automatic discount in the first message.

5. Prevent duplicate automation and inspect suppression behavior
List every active recovery flow in the ecommerce platform and messaging tools. Turn off overlapping defaults or set explicit suppression rules. Also account for cases where a platform suppresses delivery, such as Shopify’s documented prior-purchase, unavailable-item, risk, and checkout-type conditions.
6. Evaluate recovery without confusing it with the cause of abandonment
Use the reporting available in the selected tool, but do not treat message sends or clicks alone as proof that messaging solved the problem. A reminder cannot fix checkout friction, unavailable products, delivery ineligibility, or payment failure. Investigate those conditions alongside the automation, and avoid attributing a purchase to a flow without a clearly defined reporting method.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can cart-abandonment email recover every shopper?
No. The shopper must be identifiable, the relevant event must reach the tool, and the message must be eligible to send under the platform’s settings. Some workflows are limited to checkout abandoners, while others also support a pre-checkout cart event.
Should I run my store’s recovery email and a third-party flow at the same time?
Not when both target the same event without suppression logic. Shopify’s native recovery email and a third-party reminder can create duplicate messaging; Omnisend and Klaviyo both warn about overlapping recovery flows.
