For VHS gameplay, start with the signal your tape player and capture device actually provide: use a supported NTSC or PAL input mode, preserve the original 4:3 picture shape, and decide separately whether to keep the interlaced capture or deinterlace a copy for viewing. For a typical NTSC capture, 720×480 at about 29.97 frames per second is a useful starting point when your device offers it—not a universal setting. Match PAL material to a supported 576-line, 50-field mode instead.

Which capture settings should you use for VHS gameplay?

There is no single best setting that works with every VCR, capture device, driver, and version of OBS. The reliable rule is to match the source standard and choose a mode the capture device supports. OBS cautions that an unsupported resolution or frame rate may produce no picture.

  • Signal standard: Identify whether the tape and player output NTSC or PAL.
  • Input mode: Choose a device-supported resolution and rate appropriate to that signal. For NTSC, a community guide by Thebigcheese recommends 720×480 at 29.97 fps as a starting example; verify it against your hardware.
  • Aspect ratio: Keep the image at its original 4:3 display shape rather than stretching it to fill a 16:9 screen.
  • Interlacing: Preserve the original capture for archival or editing when possible; create a deinterlaced viewing copy if smoother motion is wanted.

OBS exposes resolution, frame rate, video format, color space, range, buffering, and audio controls for capture devices, but its documentation does not prescribe one VHS-specific color mode. Use a driver-supported mode and confirm the result with a short recording.

How do NTSC and PAL affect the capture mode?

Use the standard that matches the tape-player output, not a mode chosen just because it appears in a software menu. NTSC material is commonly handled in a 480-line interlaced family; PAL material uses a 576-line, 50-field family. Exact choices depend on what the capture device and its driver expose.

Source Practical starting point Important qualification
NTSC 720×480 at about 29.97 fps Thebigcheese’s 2016 OBS community guide gives this as a retro-console example, not an official universal prescription. Use it only if supported by the capture device.
PAL A supported 576-line mode in the 50-field family The exact resolution and rate depend on the device; the cited community guide’s numeric example is for NTSC, not PAL.

In OBS, open the capture device’s properties and use a listed resolution/FPS combination that gives a stable picture. A custom mode is appropriate only when it is verified for that device. OBS’s official capture-source documentation explains the device properties and notes that unsupported combinations can fail to display.

Should you capture at 720×480 or 640×480?

For a supported NTSC source, capture the device’s 720×480 input raster when available, then handle display geometry separately. The 720×480 raster uses non-square pixels for 4:3 display; simply treating every stored pixel as square can make the picture look too wide.

Thebigcheese’s 2016 community guide illustrates converting a 720×480 input to 640×480 square-pixel output for modern displays. That is an example of aspect-ratio correction, not a reason to force the capture device to record at 640×480. Preserve the full source image, set the display aspect ratio correctly, and avoid cropping gameplay merely to fill a widescreen canvas.

Should you keep the VHS capture interlaced or deinterlace it?

Interlaced video stores alternating fields, so its capture frame rate and a deinterlaced video’s output frame rate are not the same thing. For NTSC, a deinterlacer that outputs twice the field rate can produce roughly 59.94 or 60 progressive frames per second and retain smoother motion. Whether that works well depends on the device, software, source and available processing capacity.

  • For preservation or later editing: Keep an original capture where practical, then make a separate deinterlaced copy for viewing or sharing.
  • For a progressive delivery file: Use a deinterlacing method that handles motion appropriately and check moving objects for comb-like edges.
  • For PAL: Use a workflow matched to its 50-field family rather than applying NTSC rates by default.

The 2016 OBS community guide describes separating fields to produce about 60 progressive frames per second in its NTSC retro-game workflow. Treat that as a practical example rather than guaranteed output from every capture setup. OBS forum discussions are useful context, but they are not formal standards documentation.

Composite or S-video: which connection should you use?

Use the best output connection the VCR and capture device both support. Composite carries video over one connector; S-video carries luminance and chrominance separately. If both ends support S-video, it is a reasonable connection to try, but the available sources do not establish a measured quality improvement for every tape and device combination.

How do you set up OBS for a short test capture?

  1. Connect the source: Confirm that the VCR’s composite or S-video output is connected to a matching input on the capture device, and that the tape/player standard is known.
  2. Add the device in OBS: In Sources, add a Video Capture Device and select the connected hardware. Open its properties.
  3. Choose a supported mode: Use the detected resolution/FPS setting if it works, or choose a custom combination only when the device supports it. For Blackmagic Device mode, OBS says the setting should match the media, output resolution and frame rate; that statement is specific to that mode.
  4. Check picture shape: Preserve 4:3 geometry. Do not stretch the image to 16:9; correct the display aspect ratio or make a properly proportioned output copy.
  5. Set color and audio conservatively: Begin with the driver default or another explicitly supported format. Check levels, audio routing and synchronization rather than assuming one color format suits all analog devices.
  6. Record a short sample: Inspect motion for interlace combing, check framing and color, listen for audio sync, and look for dropped frames before capturing a full tape.

OBS’s Video Capture Sources guide describes device properties including format, color, buffering and audio options. A community discussion, “No Audio When Capturing from VHS”, provides practical context but should not be treated as an authoritative standards reference.

What should you check before capturing a full tape?

  • The picture is present and stable at a mode the device supports.
  • The image appears 4:3 rather than stretched or unnecessarily cropped.
  • Motion looks acceptable for the intended use, with a deliberate choice between interlaced preservation and deinterlaced output.
  • Color and brightness are not visibly clipped or unexpectedly washed out.
  • Audio is present, in sync, and recorded through the intended device or routing.
  • The sample has no obvious dropped frames or other interruptions.

For broader retro-console capture workflow examples, Thebigcheese’s OBS community guide includes the NTSC raster and aspect-ratio examples discussed above. Its recommendations date from 2016, so confirm current compatibility with the capture hardware and software in use.
