Neither option is always cheaper. A 2026 comparison by Tom’s Guide found that its selected prebuilt gaming PCs were slightly cheaper than comparable DIY builds at the time, but that result does not establish a winner for every budget or Best Buy configuration. To know which costs less for you, compare a specific Best Buy desktop with a complete, closely matched parts list using prices checked on the same day.

What current Best Buy listings show

Best Buy’s U.S. desktop listings span different performance levels and configurations, so a deal’s headline price is meaningful only alongside its specifications. When accessed in 2026, the listings included these examples:

Desktop listed by Best Buy Key specifications Observed price
CyberPowerPC Ryzen 7 8700F, RTX 5060 8GB, 16GB DDR5, 1TB SSD $1,424.99
iBUYPOWER Slate Intel Core Ultra 5 225F, Intel Arc B570, 16GB DDR5, 1TB NVMe SSD $1,199.99
CyberPowerPC Ryzen 7 9800X3D, RTX 5070, 32GB DDR5, 2TB SSD $2,299.99

These are observed page prices, not lasting recommendations or a direct comparison between equivalent machines. Inventory, seller, configuration, and discounts can change. Check the current Best Buy gaming desktop listings for the exact model and price you are considering.

Why buying versus building has no universal price winner

A prebuilt may cost less than assembling an equivalent system when component prices are high. Tom’s Guide reported in its 2026 comparison that its selected prebuilts were “slightly cheaper” than comparable PCPartPicker builds, citing then-high RAM, SSD, and GPU prices as part of the market context. That finding applies to the examples and prices it checked—not to every Best Buy deal or future price. Read its prebuilt-versus-DIY comparison for the scope of its examples.

Building can still be the better fit if you value choosing each component, making upgrades easier, or avoiding parts you do not want. Best Buy Canada’s 2024 PC Components Buying Guide says, “A pre-built PC often limits your ability to upgrade, but a custom-built system ensures flexibility.” Treat that as a general trade-off, not a guarantee about a particular computer: check its motherboard, power supply, case, cooling, and warranty before assuming parts can be changed easily. The guide is for Canada and is not evidence of U.S. pricing.

How to compare a Best Buy deal with a complete DIY build

  1. Choose one exact desktop. Record the GPU, CPU, memory capacity and type, and SSD capacity. Also note any details Best Buy provides about the motherboard, power supply, case, or cooling.
  2. Match the core specifications. Create a DIY list with the same graphics card and a comparable processor, memory, and storage. Compare systems aimed at the same gaming resolution and frame-rate target; a cheaper build with weaker gaming performance is not an equivalent alternative.
  3. Include every required item. A parts list should include the motherboard, case, power supply, cooling, and any operating-system license you need. Add peripherals only if the prebuilt includes them or they are required for your intended setup.
  4. Compare totals on the same day. Include delivery and tax consistently on both sides. Record the date, since sale prices and stock can move, and distinguish the cash total from assembly time and troubleshooting effort.
  5. Weigh more than the checkout price. Consider component quality, warranty and support, included software, upgrade flexibility, setup convenience, and how willing you are to assemble and troubleshoot a PC.

What to check beyond the headline price

Comparison point What to verify
Gaming performance Match the GPU and a comparable CPU, then consider the resolution and frame-rate target you want.
Complete cost Compare the desktop against all required DIY parts, shipping, tax, and any operating-system requirement.
Component details Check RAM amount and type, SSD capacity, power supply, cooling, motherboard, and case where disclosed.
Flexibility Inspect upgrade access and whether the model uses standard or proprietary components.
Convenience and support Consider assembly, setup, troubleshooting, returns, and the specific warranty and support terms.

Best Buy also describes an instructional PC-building experience in which a tech covers components, demonstrates a build, and gives assembly tips. The cited Best Buy PC build resource does not establish local availability or terms, so check the page and your local store before relying on it.
