If your PC already has an AM4 motherboard and DDR4 memory, the AMD Ryzen 5 5600 is a sensible low-cost all-round option; the Ryzen 7 5700X3D is a more gaming-focused AM4 upgrade when your board supports it and the price and cooling make sense. Neither is a universal drop-in replacement: check your exact motherboard’s CPU support list and required BIOS before buying.
Which upgrade path makes sense for your PC?
Start with your existing platform, not a list of CPUs. A processor that fits the socket may still be unsupported by the motherboard or its installed BIOS. Also decide whether you want to preserve your current board and DDR4 memory or pay for a broader platform change.
| Upgrade path | Best fit | Key considerations |
|---|---|---|
| AMD Ryzen 5 5600 | Lower-cost general-purpose or gaming refresh for a compatible AM4 system with DDR4 | Six cores and 12 threads; requires a discrete graphics card. Confirm exact board and BIOS support. Tom’s Hardware’s budget CPU guide includes it among AM4 options; AMD lists its specifications. AMD Ryzen 5 5600 specifications |
| AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D | Gaming-focused upgrade for a compatible AM4 system | Eight cores, 16 threads, 96 MB L3 cache and 105 W default TDP; cooler is not included. Check board support, price and cooling. Tom’s Hardware’s review notes its gaming focus and weaker productivity positioning against some newer alternatives; AMD lists its specifications. | Newer platform, such as Ryzen 5 7600-class options | Owners willing to replace more than the CPU, or whose current board has no worthwhile supported upgrade | Compare the combined CPU, motherboard and memory cost. Best low-cost AM4 refresh: Ryzen 5 5600
The Ryzen 5 5600 is the straightforward choice to investigate if you already own a compatible AM4 board and DDR4 memory and want a general-purpose upgrade without replacing the platform. AMD specifies six cores, 12 threads, a 65 W default TDP, AM4 socket and DDR4 support. It has no integrated graphics, so the system needs a discrete graphics card. AMD’s product specifications
That does not guarantee a particular performance gain. The result depends on the processor you are replacing, the graphics card, workload, memory and system temperatures. Tom’s Hardware includes the 5600 as a budget option and describes it as an all-round choice for buyers staying on AM4, but that guide recommendation is not a benchmark prediction for your PC. Best gaming-led AM4 option: Ryzen 7 5700X3D
Consider the Ryzen 7 5700X3D when gaming is the priority and your AM4 motherboard supports it. AMD lists eight cores, 16 threads, 96 MB of L3 cache, DDR4 support and a 105 W default TDP. AMD also specifies that a thermal solution is not included, so factor a suitable cooler into the upgrade if your current one is inadequate. AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D specifications
Tom’s Hardware’s review positions the chip for gaming but says newer options can be better all-rounders for productivity. Its review was published in 2024; launch-era pricing in that context should not be treated as the current price. Compare what the chip actually costs where you live with the cost of a newer platform before deciding. Tom’s Hardware Ryzen 7 5700X3D review

When a platform change is worth pricing
A drop-in CPU is not always the best use of an upgrade budget. Price a complete platform change if your board does not support a meaningful replacement, the CPU you want uses another socket, or a local CPU-and-board bundle changes the value calculation. Newer AM5 options use DDR5, so include memory and motherboard costs rather than comparing processor prices alone. Tom’s Hardware budget CPU guide
Guide recommendations are snapshots, not guarantees about today’s local prices or stock. For example, TechSpot’s mid-2026 list names the Ryzen 5 7500F as a budget CPU recommendation; that speaks to a newer-platform buying choice, not whether it is a cheaper upgrade for a PC whose owner already has AM4 and DDR4. Check compatibility before ordering
- Identify the exact motherboard. Record its model and hardware revision. For an OEM prebuilt, use the computer maker’s support information, since system-specific BIOS restrictions may apply.
- Check CPU support and BIOS requirements. Use the motherboard maker’s CPU support list to confirm the processor and the minimum BIOS version. Socket or chipset family alone does not prove compatibility. AMD’s AM4 chipset information also directs users to their motherboard manufacturer and notes that some older combinations have selective BIOS requirements. AMD AM4 chipset information
- Verify cooling and physical fit. Check cooler compatibility, case clearance and whether the cooler can handle the chosen processor. This matters especially for the 105 W 5700X3D, which does not include a thermal solution.
- Compare the complete cost. Include any required cooler, motherboard and memory, not only the CPU. Confirm local pricing and availability before choosing between an AM4 refresh and a newer platform.
Set realistic expectations for an older PC
A CPU upgrade helps only when the processor is limiting the tasks you care about. A graphics-card bottleneck in games, insufficient memory, heat-related throttling or slow storage can remain after a CPU swap. Because the old processor, graphics card and workload are different from one PC to another, there is no reliable percentage improvement to promise without those details.
Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 gaming guide says its benchmark set covers 17 demanding titles, but that describes the guide’s test coverage rather than a universal measure of CPU quality or a prediction for an individual system. Tom’s Hardware gaming CPU guide
