The strongest Brick alternatives depend on whether you want a physical key or prefer an app-only blocker. Unpluq Tag is the clearest like-for-like option: its NFC tag works with the Unpluq app, though the product listing says a subscription is required to use the tag. Foqos is a free, open-source iPhone blocker that can use an NFC tag to start or end sessions. Opal is an app-only alternative mentioned in a recent Brick review, but its current features and pricing are not established here.
How to choose a Brick alternative
Brick uses a physical device as part of its unblocking process. Alternatives differ in how much they reproduce that physical interruption: some use a dedicated NFC key, some can work with a generic tag, and app-only blockers rely on software friction instead.
- Physical separation: A key or tag makes access depend on interacting with an object; an app-only blocker does not provide that same physical-key interaction.
- Total cost: Include hardware and any recurring subscription, not only the initial device price.
- Phone compatibility: Check the app’s supported platform and the phone’s operating-system requirements.
- Controls: Compare whether you can select apps, schedule blocking, and create custom modes.
- Exceptions and recovery: Check what happens if a tag is lost or you need to end a blocked session unexpectedly.
Brick alternatives compared
| Option | How it works and platform details | Price and caveats |
|---|---|---|
| Unpluq Tag | Dedicated NFC key used with the Unpluq app; supports app selection and scheduled blocking. The product page lists iPhone iOS 16+ and Android devices. | The official Tag listing accessed in 2026 lists $26.50 and says a Premium subscription is required for Tag use. Unpluq’s FAQ describes a limited-feature free app tier. Check regional pricing and current terms. |
| Foqos | Free, open-source iPhone blocker that can use NFC tags to start or end sessions. Its site describes the product as iPhone-only and directs Android users to independent apps. | Generic NFC tags may need to be purchased separately. Confirm phone and tag compatibility. |
| Opal | App-only blocker, named as an alternative in Tom’s Guide’s Brick review published October 2, 2026. | Current official features, platform coverage, and pricing were not established in that review-based comparison; check Opal’s current listing before choosing. |
| Generic NFC tag plus compatible app | A generic tag can serve as the physical key in an NFC-supported workflow. Tom’s Guide describes setting up generic tags with Foqos. | A tag alone does not block apps. A compatible blocker app, supported phone, and configuration are all required; tag compatibility should be checked. |
| Brick (baseline) | Brick’s official product page describes a physical device needed to unbrick, custom modes, and no battery requirement. | The official page accessed in 2026 lists $59. Price and terms may change. |
Best choice if you want a physical key
Unpluq Tag: closest direct alternative
Choose Unpluq if you want a dedicated NFC item paired with an app rather than Brick’s device. The Tag page says it supports scheduled blocking and app selection, and lists iPhone iOS 16+ and Android compatibility. Its listed $26.50 purchase price is not the full cost of using the Tag: Unpluq says a Premium subscription is required for Tag use. The FAQ also describes a free app tier with limited features, so distinguish that tier from Tag functionality when comparing costs. See Unpluq’s FAQ for its current free-tier limits, website-blocking information, and lost-tag handling.
Foqos with an NFC tag: an iPhone-focused route
Foqos describes itself as a free, open-source iPhone blocker and supports using NFC tags to start or end sessions. It is a software option rather than a dedicated branded tag purchase, but the tag is still only a trigger: the app and a compatible iPhone do the blocking. The official site currently identifies Foqos as an iPhone app, so Android users should not assume it is available on their device. Check Foqos’s site for current setup and compatibility details.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Generic tags: cheaper hardware does not mean a complete blocker
A generic NFC tag or sticker may provide a physical-key interaction when paired with a compatible app such as Foqos. Tom’s Guide’s Brick review, published October 2, 2026, discusses setting up generic NFC tags with Foqos. The tag does not enforce app limits by itself; confirm that the phone can read the tag and that the blocker app supports the intended workflow before buying.
Best choice if you do not need a physical key
Opal: app-only alternative to investigate
Tom’s Guide names Opal as an app-only Brick alternative. That makes it relevant if avoiding dedicated hardware matters more than requiring a physical object to unlock access. The review-based information available here does not establish Opal’s current platform coverage, feature set, or pricing, so verify those details in its current official listing before deciding.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
What Brick offers as the comparison point
Brick’s official product page describes a physical device that must be present to unbrick, custom modes, and no battery requirement. It listed the device at $59 when accessed in 2026. Compare that one-time hardware cost with Unpluq’s listed Tag price plus its required subscription, or with the app and compatible-tag costs of an NFC workflow. These listed prices are volatile and may differ by region or at checkout. Brick product details are on Brick’s official product page.

- Choose Unpluq if you want a dedicated NFC key and app-based controls, and are comfortable factoring its required subscription into the cost.
- Consider Foqos if you use an iPhone, want an open-source blocker, and are comfortable setting up an NFC tag workflow.
- Consider a generic NFC tag only after confirming that your phone and chosen blocker app support it; the tag is an accessory, not a standalone blocker.
- Investigate Opal if you want software-only blocking and do not need a physical key, but verify its current offer and supported devices.
- Stay with Brick if its physical device, custom modes, and no-battery design suit you better than an NFC-tag setup or app-only friction.
No independent statistic directly comparing the effectiveness of these Brick alternatives was identified in the sources cited here. Vendor claims about reducing screen time should therefore be treated as product claims, not as independently established evidence that one option works better.
