BMO Smart Advantage Checking is a strong general-purpose choice for free checking with no minimum balance, provided you use paperless statements and understand its non-BMO ATM fee. Key Smart Checking, BECU Checking, Ameris Bank Free Checking, and Commerce Free Checking are other options, each with conditions to check before opening.
“Free checking” here means a $0 monthly maintenance fee and no minimum balance requirement. Opening deposits, statement options, ATM fees, membership rules, and waiver conditions can still affect the account’s cost.

2. Key Smart Checking — best for a small opening deposit
KeyBank labels this product Key Smart Checking and describes it as “Free Checking.” It has no monthly fee and no minimum balance requirement. The account does, however, require a $10 minimum opening deposit.
That distinction is easy to miss: no minimum balance describes what you must keep in the account after opening; it does not mean you can open the account with $0.

If the account is overdrawn by $20 or less at the end of the day, KeyBank says no overdraft fee is charged under that feature. This is useful protection for a small accidental shortfall, but it is not a reason to treat the account as permission to spend beyond the available balance.
Key Smart Checking is a good fit if you want a no-monthly-fee account and can meet the $10 opening requirement. Before applying, check KeyBank’s current availability in your state and review the account’s current deposit agreement for other service charges.

The limitation is eligibility. BECU is not an account that anyone can open without qualification. You must first become a BECU member, open a Member Advantage Savings Account, and satisfy BECU’s field-of-membership rules.

Ameris is a reasonable choice for customers who mainly use a debit card, mobile deposit, alerts, and online banking, and who do not need a large free check supply. Confirm ATM availability and any current out-of-network ATM charges before opening, particularly if Ameris has no convenient locations near you.
5. Commerce Free Checking — free only after choosing the right statement setting
Commerce Free Checking has a $0 monthly fee, but its statement rules deserve attention. To receive a free monthly paperless statement, you must activate Online Banking and sign up for paperless statements.
Commerce waives statement-option fees for the first 60 days after a new account is opened. That grace period does not apply to existing or converted accounts, so do not mistake the initial period for a permanent waiver.

Commerce says SmartSave and Round Up have no fee to use. The page displays APYs marked effective April 3, 2025. That date is a disclosure date, not a promise that the rate will remain unchanged after opening. No minimum balance is required to earn the displayed APY, but variable rates can change.
Accounts commonly mistaken for free checking
Several well-known checking accounts can have a $0 monthly fee for some customers, but they are not unconditionally free. The difference is whether you can reliably meet the waiver requirement every statement cycle.

| U.S. Bank Bank Smartly Checking | Check the current disclosure | Examples include $1,000+ in combined monthly direct deposits, a $1,500+ average balance, or an eligible personal U.S. Bank credit card. | The surfaced official pricing document is effective May 13, 2024, so it should not be treated as a definitive 2026 schedule. The credit-card condition is also limited to a personal card that is open, activated, in good standing, and owned by the checking-account owner. |
| TD Essential Banking | $4.95 | Only when the primary account holder is age 13–17. | Customers age 18 or older generally should not call it free. The account does not offer personal checks. |
| TD Complete Checking | $15 | $500+ in direct deposits per statement cycle, a $500 minimum daily balance, or $5,000 in combined linked personal deposit balances. | Missing the condition can trigger the monthly fee. |
| Bank of America Advantage Plus Banking | $12 | A qualifying direct deposit of at least $250 each statement cycle, a $1,500 minimum daily balance, or an eligible BofA Rewards tier. | The $1,500 balance must not fall below the threshold at any point during the cycle. The opening deposit is $100. |
| Santander Essential Checking | $4 | Any owner under age 26 or age 65 or older. | The age waiver can disappear when the owner no longer meets the condition. The domestic non-Santander ATM fee is $2.50. |
How to compare a “free” checking account
1. Separate the monthly fee from the total cost
Start with the monthly maintenance fee, then check the charges most likely to affect your own use. A $0 account can still cost money through paper statements, check orders, out-of-network ATM withdrawals, wire transfers, or other optional services.
2. Check the opening deposit
“No minimum balance” is not the same as “no opening deposit.” Key Smart Checking requires $10, while Bank of America Advantage Plus requires $100. Confirm the amount before starting an application so you have a funding source ready.

3. Look at ATM access in your area
Use the bank’s ATM locator before opening an account. BECU advertises a network of more than 77,000 surcharge-free ATMs. BMO customers can use BMO and Allpoint ATMs in the United States without a BMO ATM fee, but a non-BMO ATM transaction costs $3.
4. Read the paper-statement rule
If you prefer mailed statements, BMO charges $3 unless an owner is 65 or older. Commerce requires Online Banking and paperless enrollment for its free monthly paperless statement. “Free checking” often assumes digital delivery.
5. Confirm eligibility before entering your information
BECU requires membership eligibility and a Member Advantage Savings Account. Some banks also restrict online applications based on citizenship or residency. For example, BMO applicants who are neither U.S. citizens nor U.S. resident aliens must apply by phone or at a branch.
