Short answer: iPhones do not use third-party antivirus apps like Windows PCs do. Apple’s iPhone security model relies on centralized app distribution, code signing and strict sandboxing; iOS security apps instead focus on features such as blocking malicious websites, warning about scams or unsafe Wi-Fi, monitoring accounts, and providing a VPN. For most people, start with Apple’s built-in protections and keep iOS updated. Consider a security app if you want a specific additional feature—not because it promises to scan every app on your iPhone.
What “antivirus for iPhone” actually means
Apple describes iPhone app security as a combination of centralized distribution, code signing and strict sandboxing. Its documentation discusses antivirus protection separately for Mac. That distinction matters: iOS apps have constrained access to other apps, so a third-party iPhone security app should not be treated as a desktop-style scanner that checks every installed app for viruses. On iPhone, products marketed as antivirus or mobile security typically offer particular privacy and safety features: web and phishing protection, scam alerts, unsafe Wi-Fi warnings, account or breach monitoring, VPN service, or checks for device-security settings. Choose based on the feature you need and verify what the current iOS app and subscription include.

How to choose a free or paid iPhone security app
Compare the protection you will actually use, rather than relying on the word “antivirus” or a top-pick label. Free and paid tiers can differ in included features, supported iOS versions, regional availability and subscription terms.

- Web and phishing protection: Check whether the app filters dangerous sites in the browser or apps you use and how it handles suspicious links.
- Scam alerts: Find out which messages, links or other activity the app can warn about; do not assume every app monitors every communication.
- Wi-Fi warnings: See whether it alerts you to network risks and whether you need to open the app or enable a particular setting.
- Account or identity monitoring: Confirm what accounts or data are monitored, what triggers an alert and whether the feature is included in your plan.
- VPN: Check whether VPN service is included, its traffic limits and whether it is part of a different subscription tier.
- Requirements and terms: Check the supported iOS version, device compatibility, free-tier limits, introductory cost and renewal price in the live App Store listing or vendor plan details.
- Overlap with Apple: Consider whether you already use Apple’s account, device-recovery and theft protections, so you can focus on features they do not provide, such as a particular web filter or VPN.
Set up Apple’s built-in protections first
Apple provides controls for account security, theft response and device recovery. These are not substitutes for a web filter, but they address risks an antivirus-style app may not. The Apple Privacy – Control overview describes these protections.
Use Stolen Device Protection
On iOS 17.3 or later, Stolen Device Protection can require Face ID or Touch ID for sensitive actions when your iPhone is away from familiar locations and add a security delay. Enable it in Settings if your device supports it. The exact on-screen options can vary with iOS version.

Secure your account and make recovery possible
- Use a passcode; Apple identifies six-digit passcodes as one of its device protections.
- Enable two-factor authentication for your Apple Account.
- Use Find My and Activation Lock to help locate and protect a lost or stolen iPhone.
Reserve Lockdown Mode for a high-risk threat model
Apple calls Lockdown Mode an optional, extreme protection intended for the few people who may face highly sophisticated targeted attacks. It is available on iOS 16 or later and limits some apps, websites and features, changing normal device behavior. Update your devices before turning it on, and use it when the restrictions make sense for your risk—not as a routine replacement for a security app. Apple explains Lockdown Mode and its effects.

For many iPhone owners, keeping iOS current and using Apple’s passcode, account-security and recovery features is a sensible starting point. Add a third-party app when you can name the gap it fills—for example, malicious-site filtering, scam warnings, Wi-Fi alerts, account monitoring or a VPN. If the main reason to subscribe is the promise of scanning all installed iPhone apps for viruses, that is not a capability you should assume from an iOS security product.
