For a typical dedicated Android tablet, start with the official Home Assistant Companion app: turn on Keep screen on, assign a streamlined dashboard to a dedicated kiosk user, and optionally make Home Assistant the Android home app so it opens after a restart. Check the target device’s Android and system WebView compatibility before mounting it. Choose Fully Kiosk instead when its separate kiosk controls and remote administration meet a specific need.
Set up the Home Assistant Companion app
- Install the app and connect it to your Home Assistant server. Confirm that the dashboard loads on the tablet before configuring it for wall use.
- Keep the display awake while the dashboard is open. In the Companion app settings, enable Keep screen on. Home Assistant documents that the display remains on while the app’s WebView activity is active, overriding Android’s built-in Sleep setting. This setting does not establish that background networking or app activity will be maintained in every device power state. Home Assistant Companion Docs: Android WebView
- Give the panel a focused dashboard. Create a dashboard for wall use, then select it as the default for the user who signs in on the tablet. A separate Home Assistant user for each kiosk makes it possible to choose a device-specific default dashboard.
- Optionally make Home Assistant the Android home app. Follow the Companion documentation’s Android Home App (launcher) instructions. With Home Assistant set as the home app, the device can open it automatically after a restart. The normal Android Home button will no longer open the app drawer; the guide describes ways to open other apps through Android settings or dashboard notification commands. Choose between Companion and Fully Kiosk
The Companion app is the straightforward starting point when its dashboard display and keep-awake behavior are sufficient. Fully Kiosk is worth considering when you need its separate kiosk and remote-management controls. These are two documented approaches, not the only Android kiosk options.

To connect Fully Kiosk to Home Assistant, configure Remote Admin in Fully Kiosk and use the device’s IP address or hostname and Remote Admin password in the Home Assistant integration. Restrict access to a network and credentials you intend to secure. The integration is local polling and provides device sensors and controls, including brightness, screen state, motion detection, screensaver, start URL, and app restart. Check Android and WebView compatibility before mounting
Test the actual device with the current dashboard before committing to a permanent installation. Panel Assistant’s project documentation warns that an old system WebView can stop a current Home Assistant dashboard from rendering, even on a newer panel, and its compatibility information is model-specific. That observation is not a universal minimum Android version for all tablets or app configurations. Panel Assistant for Android wall panels
- Verify the dashboard renders correctly on the chosen device and system WebView.
- Check the screen size and whether the chosen dashboard is readable in the intended orientation.
- Confirm the mount fits the tablet and leaves access to buttons and ports.
- Plan cable routing and the power arrangement for the installation.
Tune power and screen behavior for the installation
There is no universally established brightness, timeout, charging, battery-management, or motion-threshold setting for every Android panel. These choices depend on the tablet and its placement. Companion’s Keep screen on behavior applies while its WebView activity is active; it is not a guarantee about every background or power state.

If the desired behavior is for the screen to dim or turn off when idle and wake on motion, that is different from simply keeping the Companion WebView awake. The available documentation does not establish universal values for that configuration. Fully Kiosk’s integration offers screen, brightness, screensaver, and motion-related controls, but the appropriate behavior and settings must be verified on the specific device.
