There is no single best Android sound-control app for everyone. Start with Android’s built-in Sound & vibration settings for separate media, call, ringtone, notification, and alarm levels. For extra controls, Samsung Galaxy owners can consider Sound Assistant, headphone listeners can try Wavelet, and users of compatible audio players can evaluate Poweramp Equalizer. The right choice depends on your phone, Android version, audio output, and the apps you use.

Start with Android’s built-in volume and sound controls
If you only need to change how loud media, calls, alarms, or notifications are, you may not need another app. Android provides separate sound levels and controls for mute and vibration, ringtones, notification sounds, and system sounds. The exact path varies by phone maker and Android version; consult Google’s Android Help for steps that apply to your version.
Use built-in controls first for ordinary volume adjustments and ringtone or notification changes. They are the baseline; third-party audio apps address more specific needs such as per-app levels or equalization.
How do I control volume for individual apps on Android?
On a Samsung Galaxy phone: try Sound Assistant
Samsung’s Sound Assistant is the clearest option in this group for Galaxy owners looking for per-app media volume. Samsung’s Galaxy Store listing describes per-app volume and the ability to switch an app’s output between Bluetooth and the phone speaker. It also lists 150 fine volume steps, equalizer and audio-preset controls, mono audio, and left/right balance. The 150-step figure is Samsung’s published feature claim, not an independent measurement.

Sound Assistant is a Samsung-focused utility, not a universal Android control panel. Samsung’s listing includes One UI and Android compatibility references, and some functions require particular software releases. Review the current Galaxy Store listing for your device and region before installing.
On other Android phones
The apps covered here do not establish a universal way to set separate volume levels for every app on every Android phone. Check your manufacturer’s sound settings and the app’s compatibility information. An equalizer’s per-app controls, where available, are not necessarily the same as a system volume mixer: they may only affect audio processing for supported players.

What’s the best Android equalizer app for headphones?
Wavelet: headphone-oriented tuning
Wavelet is the most headphone-focused equalizer option in this group. Its Google Play listing describes AutoEq, imported custom optimizations, profiles that load when headphones change, equal-loudness compensation, a graphic equalizer, channel balance, limiter, virtualizer, and reverberation. The listing says “5000+ AutoEq profiles”; that is Wavelet’s vendor-published figure, not an independently audited count.
Wavelet’s listing describes headphone-aware behavior and updates to enhanced-session detection and automatic AIDL detection, while also noting that some features are unavailable in that mode. Those descriptions do not guarantee that every profile or control works with every phone, headphone connection, or audio app. Review Wavelet’s current Google Play listing and test the features you need with your own setup.

Poweramp Equalizer: for supported players
Poweramp Equalizer is a separate app from Poweramp, the developer’s local music player. The developer describes the equalizer as an audio engine that can work with streaming and other players when they support Android audio effects, with per-app controls and presets. That qualification matters: the developer says availability may depend on the device, Android version, and player support.
The developer’s site also describes a 64-band parametric equalizer in Poweramp and a trial followed by a one-time unlock. These commercial details can change, so check the developer’s site for current terms. Do not assume the separate Equalizer app will process every streaming app or every kind of audio output.

Pixel-specific option: Adaptive Sound
Google documents Adaptive Sound for selected Pixel models through Pixel 10. It requires current Android software and Android System Intelligence, and adjusts phone-speaker output for the surrounding environment without changing the volume slider. Google states that it does not work through external speakers or headphones. See Google Pixel Phone Help for supported devices and setup details.
Pixel Sound Amplifier and Conversation mode are separate listening and accessibility features. They are not general Android equalizers or replacements for per-app volume controls.

Why doesn’t an Android equalizer work in every app?
Equalizers depend on how an app and Android expose audio for processing. Android’s AudioEffect API reference says an effect must be associated with an audio session to apply to a particular AudioTrack or MediaPlayer. It also warns: “NOTE: attaching insert effects (equalizer, bass boost, virtualizer) to the global audio output mix by use of session 0 is deprecated.”
As a result, a listing’s “system-wide” description should not be read as a guarantee that an effect will reach every app, Bluetooth device, speaker, or audio path. Compatibility can depend on the phone’s Android implementation, the player’s support for audio effects, and how the audio session is exposed. Before paying for an unlock, confirm that your specific player and output work with the features you want.
